Neat, clean, well-maintained market.
I stopped in to grab a bite before some shopping (there's a cafe serving tacos, tortas and more inside). I saw the sign for pupusas and thought I'd give it a try. They only had chicharron (no queso), so I opted for two of those.
Normally, two pupusas is perfect when I'm hungry. These pupusas were HUGE compared to those I've had elsewhere. They were also incredibly greasy. Inside, the chicharron mixed with the dough to reach the consistency of scrapple. I love me some scrapple, but not in my pupusa. The curtido was made of big chunks of cabbage and seemed to have been combined with jalapenos in escabeche. I'm far from a pupusa expert, but I've never seen curtido like this before. There was no specific salsa served with the pupusas; I was given a cup for the salsa bar.
As a lover of pupusas (I even wrote a song about them!), this was a huge disappointment. But its obviously not the specialty here, so I'd give their Mexican food a try next time I'm in the area. read more
