That's something the coastal elites will never understand. In the Bay Area, Denny's is a punchline. A fluorescent graveyard of bad decisions and worse coffee. But out here-- in the long, flat silence between Oklahoma City and whatever comes next-- a Denny's at 5:30 in the morning isn't a joke. It's a sanctuary. We pulled in under a sky that hadn't decided whether it was done being night. The parking lot was nearly empty-- just a few cars scattered like survivors of some quiet, unspoken ordeal. Inside, the light was soft. Not the harsh interrogation glow you expect-- but something warmer. Forgiving. We took a booth that looked out over the parking lot, and for a moment-- elevated just enough above the ground-- it felt like a temple. My own private Parthenon. Below us, the world was still assembling itself. Engines cooling. Daylight negotiating its terms. The kind of stillness that only exists before people remember who they're supposed to be.
