The place is quite old and worn out kind of dirty service was fast enough, but the food was very greasy and not very tasty.

Roma Italian Restaurant - Italian Sausage Parmigiana

It was brimming with fresh garlic, basil and capers. It was beautifully presented with a garnish of marinated basil leaves, tomato, green pepper and onion. We ordered a second basket of their delightful dinner rolls, just to continue enjoying the sauce. As great as the dipping sauce was, their Minestrone soup was one of the best of all that I have had the pleasure of enjoying. The pasta was comprised of penne as well as tortellini, the vegetables were likewise adventurous : artichoke hearts, zucchini, mushrooms, tomatoes (of course), onions, and capers (see the photo). The stock was rich and flavorful, accented by pieces of lemon , ever so slightly reminiscent of one of my favorite Greek soups, Avgolemono; yet definitely replete with the classic Italian mystique that is Minestrone. The Veal Parmigiana was awesome and their Limoncello Mascarpone was a good rendition of the classic Italian dessert. Our server was the best, and handsome to boot!!

In town visiting family and wanted to try this place as it has good reviews. I was saddened by the…read moreway it looked as I worked at the hotel back years ago when it was a Sheraton and the restaurant was 5 star. We almost changed our mind. We probably should have. While the service was great the food was not. The bread basket was good but the actual meal was disappointing. It looked like Tyson chicken patties and Ragu were used for the chicken parm and the stuffed mushrooms lacked stuffing. The hot coffee was cold! For being a place when it was the Burgundy Room and Bar that was top noch what it is now is sadly not worth it. Even the decor is tacky at best. It's fine to change things, that happens with time but this? This is a whole lotta nope. Really sad. I'd hoped for better. You are better off getting a loaf of French bread and chef Boyardee to be honest and staying home. You'll save a buncha money too as it is way over priced for what it is. I only am giving 2 stars because the service was good and the rolls were good otherwise I would leave just 1. If you do go I recommend alka seltzer when you get home. I had to stop at Casey's for some.

This spot was jumping this Sunday afternoon. Definitely a popular choice with the locals, and…read morethat's always a good sign! The parking lot was full, but we were able to be sat right away. We were taken to a booth and the seats and table were wet from the quick wipe it had just been given. It wasn't just wet, there were also lots of crumbs that had been left behind. As I looked around, I noticed that the floors were littered with trash and food also. Straw wrappers, napkins and bits of food were present under each and every table. I understand that during a busy rush, the staff probably can't take the time to sweep, but even after the rush nobody bothered to address it. There was a gentleman bussing tables who stayed "on patrol", though. He circled the dining room at regular intervals and made sure that dishes were cleared in a timely manner. I see you, sir! We were greeted right away and our drink orders were taken. That young lady was very kind and upbeat, which was quite welcoming. When she returned with our beverages, she offered to take our orders, but we weren't ready. And just like that, she ditched us! J/K, but kind of for real. A different waitress appeared and took over from there. She was efficient and took good care of us, but in a way, she wasn't as warm. She was no-nonsense and straight to the point. Our food was decent. My husband had The Special, which is a basic breakfast plate (eggs, French toast and bacon), I had the turkey club with fries, and my in-laws both had phily steak sandwiches with fries. The food didn't come out super fast, but that gave us time to settle-in and not feel rushed. It was quite nice and a change from what my husband and I are accustomed to where we live. We had a leisurely meal and caught up with old friends who wandered in and out during our meal. That was another clear sign that this place is a local favorite.

I'm in Danville for business quite often, and whenever I ask people where I should be eating in the…read morearea, they always mentioned Gilbert Street Cafe. I'm really starting to understand the "midwest diner", a large restaurant that always seems to be busy, friendly wait staff and a menu that has every classic American option under the sun. The food is typically done well, and that's why everyone recommends Gilbert Street Cafe. I've come here on three separate occasions thus far and my experiences have been quite consistent. My first visit I got their fried chicken tenders, with their vegetable of the day and a side of hash browns. The breading on the tenders were pretty good, but the chicken itself was missing some seasoning. The vegetable of the day (which seems to always be the vegetable of the day whenever I visit) was mixed veggies. It probably was the stuff you buy frozen in the bag, that was just okay as well. The hash browns were fantastic though, I would highly recommend getting breakfast items, they seem to do those extremely well! My next visit I order the chopped steak and I was very impressed. This one had a lot of good flavor, wasn't too dry and, did I mention that the portions here are super big? That's the midwest diner for ya! On my most recent visit I got the country fried steak with mashed potatoes. This steak was also huge, maybe even larger than the size of my face. It came with this delicious white gravy that reminded me of the gravy put on biscuits and gravy here in the south. It was full of pepper, just the way I liked it. The potatoes on the other hand were a bit disappointing, it was almost like it was powdered mash. Not even the gravy could save it from the texture and flavor. If you're looking for a place to take the family, look no further than Gilbert Street Cafe. It is a community staple, and if you've been around long enough, you'll be sure to find someone you know there. It truly is part of the beating heart of Danville.

I would've liked to get a salad, but they only had iceberg lettuce and due to it's lack of nutritional value I thought that to be a waste of space in my stomach. The only other veggie options I saw were overcooked green beans (limp and watery) and broccoli chicken or pepper chicken. All veggies come sauced and with chicken, apparently! What I did get onto my plate was hit or miss. The trend seemed to be that the Asian options were the best. The general tso's, sweet n' sour and teriyaki chicken were good. The teriyaki had a few dry pieces, but I think they just weren't that fresh. The same with the fried shrimp. It was really hard and tasted old. The egg roll was mushy and disappointing, though. The macaroni and cheese was disgusting. The mashed potatoes and gravy tasted instant, but I have a soft spot for instant potatoes! A little salt and pepper and they were just fine. I had two helpings. I managed to find some plain ole steamed cauliflower that I paired with the clarified butter meant for the crab legs that were on special for Father's Day. The staff were nice and kept our plates cleared, but a refill of my soda was hard to come by. They do offer a 10% discount for seniors over the age of 60, which is nice. We finished off the meal with ice cream, served in individual cups. They also offered chocolate chip and mint chocolate chip that you scoop yourself... definitely not the most sanitary.
