My kids really loved this aquarium that we came here 3 consecutive days. They have a butterfly exhibit that had abundant amount of butterflies. You aren't allowed to touch them but if they land on you, you just enjoy that blessing and time with the butterfly that landed on you. All of the staff there are well-trained, welcoming, and friendly with both my kids. You have the option to upgrade your regular admission to a one year membership after your visit. To save yourself from a 3.5% surcharge if you use credit, you'll want to pay in cash. Breakeven for my membership was about 3 visits and we did just that for the 4 days we were in Riverhead. My kids loved it so much that they are already asking to go back. The aquarium is well kept and the sharks are HUGE!! They are definitely well fed. The aquarium is Atlantis themed and you can tell a lot of time, money, and detail went into the making of this aquarium. The aquarium is privately owned and you do see sponsorship (advertisement) from private companies. I am comparing my experience with the NY aquarium in Brooklyn, which I have visited countless times. The Long Island Aquarium blows the NY aquarium away in every way possible. It's new, ventilation indoors is amazing, the sea lion show has shade, the penguins can be seen up close, there's an inexpensive option to snorkel, theres a big tree house, etc. I would totally recommend coming here with your family. If you come on weekdays, there might be a lot of school kids, and if you want to avoid that, you probably should should come around 1 or 2pm. Highly recommend this aquarium. read more

This aquarium is ok. It is very expensive and small and sad it's the only option on LI. We went for my daughter's second birthday in May. You are free during your birthday week however the tickets are costly for everyone else. There is a first responder discount which helped a little. The one thing is that we didn't factor in field trips. When we went the whole middle school of Northport was there and it was so loud and rowdy. Of course, they are kids but it seemed that this was way overbooked in field trips. My daughter and us as a family really couldn't enjoy the aquarium due to the crowd and rowdiness on a weekday... There were also limited outdoor exhibits. I felt that we weren't there for long due to the crowd and lack of exhibits. Definitely don't recommend the trip out there. read more

Took my mom and aunt out to check this aquarium, especially since options in NYC are pretty limited. It's definitely a drive to get here. If you happen to be a tourist passing through or on a road trip, it might be worth a brief stop--it's tucked into a small, quaint town that gives the trip some local character. However, a few things are worth noting: Parking: Unless you're staying at the hotel, you have to park about 4 to 5 blocks away. While they claim to offer a shuttle service, it randomly wasn't running on the Saturday we visited. I'd say for adults the walkthrough was about 40mins to an hr. You'd be done. With kids running around you probably can finish this in 2-3 hrs tops. Value: I understand aquariums are expensive to maintain, but the admission price just doesn't line up with the experience. The facility feels run-down, and while some of the sea life is neat to see, overall it needs a lot of work. For what they charge, you're better off visiting Sea Life at the American Dream Mall. read more

The Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, NY is possibly the best aquarium I have ever visited. And I've been to a lot, especially when my Grandson was younger. The experience is phenomenal, whether you're young or older. There are interactive experiences, dives, tours, touch experiences and much, much more. My favorite is the penguin exhibition. The clear sides and floor is raised high enough for a child to go under. One comes to a rounded raised portion of the floor where the child can stand completely up and feels as if it's in the midst of the penguins. The penguins are very gregarious. When my Grandson looked at the side of the exhibit they all came over to greet him. As he moved, they moved to follow him. What fun! Don't miss the sea lion show, large living coral exhibit, shark tank and butterflies, bugs and bees garden. We had an AMAZING time at Long Island Aquarium! The aquarium is super spacious and never felt crowded, with so many interesting exhibits to explore. Everything is really well done, but the sharks absolutely stole the show -- seriously SO cool to see them up close and swimming overhead! Parking is about 1-2 blocks away, just follow the signs for "Aquarium Parking." There's a shuttle that runs often, and the driver was incredibly friendly. We were so glad we chose that option because it was slushy everywhere, and the shuttle made the whole experience easy and stress-free. Plan for about 2 hours, which felt absolutely perfect -- enough time to see everything, enjoy the exhibits, and not feel rushed at all. Fun, exciting, and 100% worth the visit. Very nice aquarium. I live in queens and traveled the hour and a half out to this place cuz I hear the NYC aquarium is underwhelming and I haven't been in a long time. Tickets are pretty pricey but it's really a nice experience. The grounds are pretty, there's plenty to see, a lot of interactive stuff some more money and some free. All kinds of animals not just aquatic. We didn't eat inside. We were able to bring a bag with snacks and water bottles in. The sting ray tank where you can pet them was super nice but I wish there was soap at the sink! And the butterfly habitat was super awesome although i expected more butterflies and to see less water bugs. read more

I found the aquarium to be very expensive especially for what they had to offer. My 2 year old enjoyed herself but it wasn't much. She kept asking to see octopus but that exhibit was under construction. The butterfly room was pretty cool tho. While on a recent work trip in Long Island my husband and I wanted to check out some fun things to do on the weekend. We had an absolute blast at Long Island aquarium! This is an absolute great way to spend a day between the amazing animals and the staff kids and adults will all have fun. The butterfly section was what dreams are made of and seeing some of my favorite butterflies for the first time in person was an absolute highlight of the day. We also added penguin photos because why not and getting to see that little nugget made me day. But the best part was most definitely my sea lion kisses! But if I had to pick my favorite part, it's definitely the staff. I have limited mobility so sometimes I use a cane and sometimes I'm in a scooter, the way the staff went out of their way for us was nothing short of amazing and that goes a long way for both my husband and I. Being handicapped accessible is one thing, having staff that make sure their visitors are comfortable, well I'd give ten stars of if I could! We also spent some time with one of the staff who loved their new owl as much as I did and she brought us over to watch her be fed. Another of the staff was feeding one of their snakes and answered so many questions. This is definitely an amazing aquarium that truly cares about their animals! They also have Amazon wishlists for their animals and you can send them fun new toys to play with! You don't want to skip this place whether you have kids or not. We made our yearly trip to the aquarium to celebrate my niece's birthday. Fun fact is that no matter how old you are, you could get in free for your birthday. Reminder: bring proof of date of birth. Since my sister and my niece are days apart, they both got in free. Planning it out this way is great because it helps offset the cost. An adult ticket will run you $50. I'm in town on a business conference and our planners organized an after work event at the Long Island Aquarium which included dinner appetizers and an open bar. We had the entire aquarium to ourselves. We were informed to walk around at our leisure and there would be appetizers in various locations within the aquarium. We stayed at the Hyatt West End because it was recommended if we wanted to spend the day at the Aquarium. We were so disappointed at how small the Aquarium was. Hard to say. I found it to be expensive, $50 per adult. I highly suggest getting discount tickets at the library. You can finish your entire time in about two hours or so with seeing everything. It can also be very crowded with strollers everywhere so it's hard to navigate and look at different exhibits. As soon as you walk in you can pet stringrays and feed them. Just be careful as they do splash water. There's things to see both inside and outside. There's also shows to attended as well as different experiences for an extra cost. Overall, the day was good. We took my daughter to the Long Island Aquarium when they were having their 25th Anniversary promotion where adult tickets were $25 on the 25th of the month in the summer months (which is pretty much half price). General Admission on a normal day is on the expensive side at $50.99 for adults and $35.99 for kids considering the small size of the aquarium. It had been quite a while since we had been to the aquarium since it opened so many years ago. You can easily find parking on the street in the neighborhood streets. The aquarium was nice with lots of sea animals to see. There are both indoor and outdoor exhibits. My daughter loved looking at the penguins and turtles. There was a short sea lion show, but I remember it being longer in the past or at least I remember them doing more tricks to impress the audience. On the other side of the aquarium there was a butterfly exhibit that was really fun. Lots of butterflies that flew all around and very close to you. It was funny that when we were trying to leave the experience room that there was two blue butterflies that were trying to make a break for it. They have a secondary exit room in case some butterflies attempt to escape and they can easily catch them to bring them back to their habitat. After that we walked around he got to go in the crab pit and put them up. We went in a play area that was an extra $12 but it has slides and stuff a cool thing that was extra. We ate in the cafe chicken fingers fries and a drink was like $20 it was enough to share as I wasn't that hungry. I can't believe in my four decades of life I have never been to this aquarium! My son has been driving me crazy to touch sting rays, I saw the LIA had this feature and as soon as you walked in. So off we went! I got tickets from my local library at a 20% discount, so check your library before going! The aquarium is right on Main Street. There is a parking lot about one block away which is $12 to park all day (cash only). There is a shuttle between the parking lot and the aquarium which literally takes less than a minute, but it is nice that they offer that especially in the winter months. The aquarium was not busy at all on a Saturday morning, we were able to touch the stingrays as soon as we walked in, which made all the difference in the trajectory of our day because that was my son's one thing he wanted to do, and as soon as we walked in they were there. for three dollars you can get little mini fish to feed the stingrays. there was also an interactive turtle feeding that they had fun at. There are a couple of seals outside, which are really fun to watch. The aquarium is really cute themed and was easy to navigate. Outside there was even a treehouse play area whic was really nice for them to go up and burn off a little extra energy. There's a small café, we brought our own lunchbox of food, but we're able to sit in there and enjoy our lunch out of the cold. There is also a really nice butterfly area that was included in the admission, wear bright colors if you want the butterflies to land on you. My son wore an orange sweatshirt and they were literally following him around. There are a couple of gift shops that are also reasonably priced, overall it's a really cute day trip and if you wanted to make a night of it at one of the hotels for swimming or something in the winter, the Hyatt is connected right next-door. It is so poorly run . No maps to exhibits -no idea where restrooms are -poorly laid out. There is no parking so you have to park in a lot many blocks away and either wait for a shuttle Or drag your kids on a walk. 10/10 experience for my sons 3rd birthday that we just celebrated this past weekend at the aquarium ! Jacqueline and Mary were super attentive via email prior to the party and when we got there everything was well taken care of, I did not have to think of a thing because it was handled. The food options were straight forward for the buffet and plenty of soft drink options. Our guests had a blast walking around and seeing the different animals/fish. We even had one of the staff come in with two critters for us to touch and educated on us on them. I would definitely recommend this venue for future parties and to friends/family. A really interesting place, it seems small but they have a lot of areas and tanks to explore a diverse array of fish and sea life. Unfortunately, because we visited in January, some of the outdoor amenities were not available to visit (some were open, but it was too cold to see). This was my first visit to the Long Island Aquarium. I was surprised that it was actually a small-ish aquarium but they definitely make the most of their space. So many different sections to explore! And it never felt overcrowded when we were there. Prices were pretty steep: $45.99/adult weekday. But if your birthday is within 7 days, you get in free! (Must provide proof of bday). Also, if you search, there are weekend discounts. There are many interactive events in this aquarium! You can pet stingrays, feed the Koi, and even get ankle deep in the water with the shoe crabs and crabs. For an additional charge, you can get into a wetsuit, and deep dive in the shark tank (you're in an enclosed cage). So many fun activities and displays! They also have scheduled shows, so plan accordingly. We had someplace to go after the aquarium but if we were free, we could have easily spent the whole day there. Staff was friendly and informative. There is also a little cafeteria there; offering both hot and cold meals. A great aquarium! Highly recommend! read more

We came here during a trip to visit my husband's mother. Originally, we were supposed to go to a farm but it was pouring so we made last minute plans to head to the aquarium instead. There's a parking lot located a short walk away but because it was raining so hard, hubby dropped us off at the entrance and went to park the car on his own. The ticket prices were kind of pricey but I was optimistic. My MIL was able to get a senior discount. From what my husband said, this place is known for their coral and they do have a beautiful collection of colorful coral. I did love that right at the entrance they have a stingray tank for petting and feeding the rays. They also have tons of horseshoe crabs and small sharks in the tank as well. The rays were very friendly. There's a sink nearby to wash your hands afterwards, although I did not spy any available soap. After petting the sea pups we headed to the right and crossed the bridge where we saw even more small sharks, horseshoe crabs and other fish. They have huge tanks with all different kinds of fish. The best part are the little signs with the pictures of the fish and a little description about them. We all had a fun time searching for and identifying the fish in the tank, and learning about where they are found and their conservation statuses. We saw lots of fish we knew about but were pleased to discover some new fish, like the unicorn fish. I don't think it liked to be photographed. The shark exhibit was really cool. There was an employee there that was ready for any questions we might have had. He overheard us talking about the sharks and offered new information that was unknown to us which prompted even more questions. We were shocked to see so many other fish swimming around the sharks, unfazed. We learned about their feeding schedule and saw some nurse sharks lounging on the floor of the exhibit. This was probably my favorite part of the day. They also have feeding schedules but we missed this particular day's shark feeding. After the shark, we saw some more fish and headed to their butterfly exhibit. We weren't sure how our Little would deal with the butterflies. She absolutely freaked when we visited a butterfly farm in Aruba last year. She was optimistic this time around but eventually lost it. Unfortunately, we were unable to exit the way we came in so hubby had to give me his cap so she could cover her face during our departure. She was NOT having it but it was still a fun exhibit. The butterflies were trying to escape with us so we had to be patient when leaving. There's a gift shop right next to the butterfly exhibit. We bought the kiddo some swag and got ourselves a carnivorous plant. We always wanted a venus fly trap and now we have an Audrey II of our very own! We played around with the photo booth but be advised that they definitely get you for everything interactive. We ended up buying duplicate photos because of how they have the payment system set up. We obviously were not the only ones as we found forgotten pictures left in the receipt tray. We had a decent time and went through the place fairly quickly. The ticket price was definitely more than what it was worth but it was also very rainy and a lot of their outdoor exhibits didn't even make sense to visit or were not available to visit. Had I known half of their exhibits were outdoors, I probably would have voted against going. I'm sure if they're fully operational the price isn't too bag but I will say that I had a better time at the Maritime Aquarium in CT. We love visiting the Long Island Aquarium on our trips to NY. Perfect for kids and adults alike, there is absolutely something for everyone to enjoy. Stingray petting, butterfly room, seal shows, and tons of fish, coral, and marine life, even some snakes and monkeys! Parking is a bit of a walk (especially with kids/strollers and unfortunate weather) but there is plenty of space for a quick drop off out front. In the last couple of years we've been gravitating towards aquariums. We've done Boston, Mystic, Va Beach and Long Island Aquarium in recent times. Wife voted this #1. Nice flow, nice exhibits and generally a very nice way to spend a few hours. I still think it's pricy, but all of the aquariums we've visited seemed pricy. This is my first time here and I'm definitely glad I came. I love aquariums in general so it was bothering me that I've never been here. It's a decent drive out there and I'm not sure public transportation is even an option. There's a hotel right next door as well as an event space as well. Parking is a few blocks away and a separate charge, I believe cash only. They had a shuttle bus too to take you the few blocks but I chose to walk. There's a seal display before you even go in which is pretty cool. The lobby area is huge with the check in desks straight ahead, the manta ray touch tank and the butterfly section is to the left and the entrance to the aquarium is to the right. The manta ray touch tanks has them swimming around and you can just put your hand in and gently feel them swim by. There's also a feeding time which is fun and cool as well. I think it was $3 for a small counter of fish. The main store is also right past the mantas but it's kind of set up to walk thru on the way out as that is the exit as well. The butterfly section is a separate ticket and they have their own store as well. That was a pretty cool experience. There a sealed room where the butterflies are all flying freely. They also had some bugs and such behind glass and a bee section too. The main part of the aquarium has so much to see and do. You walk right over a pond with different types of fish and then some smaller tanks right to the left and then past that is the outdoor seal show. Back towards the right was more tanks with coral reefs, sharks , octopus , and much more. The shark tank is decent sized and you can also go above it and look down into it. There's a shark experience where they drop you in a shark cage. They also had a feeding session later in the afternoon. There's also a cafeteria with hot food, sandwiches, drinks, snacks, pretzels etc. This leads to the outdoors area which has otters, koi fish, penguins, and a fishing cat as well. There's also an arcade, scoops ice cream shop, a huge climbing tree for kids, a marsh where you can walk thru barefoot, a tour boat and a snorkel experience. Definitely a great way to spend the day or even a few hours. It can get pricey if you start adding on rhe encounters and such but some of it looked like they were definitely worth it! *Full disclosure, I am not really an aquarium or zoo person, so take this review with a grain of salt. I am giving the LI Aquarium four stars because the staff were amazing and my little cousin had an awesome time! It's not what I'd consider a large aquarium, having been to Baltimore Aquarium or even the Brooklyn Aquarium, it's small in comparison. I certainly wouldn't make a special trip to go here; unless you or someone in your family is obsessed with all things marine life, I could see spending more than a few hours here before getting bored. Still, if you are in the area it's a fun activity to do, especially with the kids. The major con is the price. I do think its way overpriced for what it has to offer, but alas, isn't most things on Long Island? Because of the price I view this a treat for the kids sort of deal (because don't we already spend way too much money on stupid stuff for our littles?) One highlight of our day was painting with Pinnipeds, which was like everything else very overpriced, but the novelty of having a sea animal paint a picture was priceless...at least for my ten-year-old cousin. read more

Seeing the different exhibits was such a treat, and we especially loved the sea lion show and otter feed session. The $40 admission fee felt a little steep, but we tried to make the most of it by watching as many of the talk & feed sessions as we could. Like others have mentioned, the parking situation here is not the most ideal. We didn't want to pay $12 to walk through their muddy parking lot down the road but also didn't want to take our chances with 2-hour street/municipal parking, so we ended up parking at the free lot beside the LIRR station and walked about 15 minutes to and fro. It was a nice enough day out for us to walk, but I know this isn't exactly an accessible option for folks with mobility issues or strollers. read more

The perfect day was ruined by "Connie". I came with my wife, son and Aunt who's a senior. The exhibits were all great. No exaggeration, every staff member there deserves a raise. It was almost Disney-like kindness coming from each member and THEY all deserve their praises. That's why the 3 stars were given. We were some of the last people to leave, because I paid for my son to swim with the stingrays. We were escorted out by a kind young lady . We were headed towards the register ( closest to the exit" so to anyone watching, they'd see we were advancing towards the exit. From my right side I hear " oh my God , what's this" and I see a woman charging at my wife , child and senior aunt pointing her finger, yelling "keep going THAT WAY ! " she was physically to close for comfort. That type of treatment is unacceptable and unnecessary. She continued ranting about how some more important people had paid to schedule a banquet or event of some sort, which was very condescending and clearly improperly scheduled because after our interaction, the walk to the car and the drive back passed the Aquarium, there were still families leaving. I'd even watched one family leave directly in front of us unscathed by her abrasive behavior. I say this to say , you'll have a wonderful time at the aquarium. But I don't think I'll ever go back because of this instance. Which is unfortunate because there's more exhibits for my child to see and he as a 9 year old couldn't understand why his parents were being treated in such a manner. Jimmy read more
