Long story short, I lost my drone in Huntington Harbor while trying to take a picture in the middle of the channel...
I thought 'oh well, that's why I have the drone insurance. I'll just get a new one now.'
Yeah, not so much...Turns out you actually need to return your damaged/soaked drone to collect on the insurance. Guess I didn't read the small print. Actually I didn't really ready any print...
Anyway -- in order to have insurance cover the loss, I needed to recover my submerged $1000+ toy from the murky water. I called the Harbor Master and asked if diving down there was possible..he suggested I call a hull cleaning service. Nobody called back...but then I found Mike.
I was optimistic a trained diver could get down and find it because I had the exact location the drone went down (I have a "find my drone" feature in my phone that pinpoints the last known location.)
I talked to Mike and we came up with a game plan. We rented a double kayak and made our way to the channel. Using the map on my phone, we got within 20ft or so from the pin drop where the drone went down, and Mike dove in.
It was about 10-12 ft deep and within seconds he came up saying visibility was zero...I thought, this isn't looking good.
But about 10 minutes later, I see Mike lift my water logged drone above the surface of the water like it was Excalibur or something, and I couldn't believe it.
He was down there, effectively blind, and managed to feel his way around the bottom, then BINGO, He had it. I couldn't help but laugh the whole time we kayaked back. 'No way did that just happen!' But it did, and now I can get reimbursed for my sloppy drone flying. I'd say it was worth the $200 I spent to recover the drone -- the story alone was worth it lol. Thanks Mike! read more
