I recently bought a Telecaster from L&M Royal Vista (Calgary), and subsequently had a setup done. I wasn't happy with it initially, but when I approached the location via email they were very helpful, and educated me further on guitar setups. I love playing that guitar, now. I can't say enough about how considerate and professional Tyler H, Carl and Dave at that L&M location were, and their commitment to high quality service. Long & McQuade is a brand that's been around for a while. I appreciate their consistency and their variety. This particular L&M was a great experience for me: I came in and checked out a few bass guitars, found one I liked, and was quickly set up with it and a bass amp to test it. I appreciated the sales people and their demeanour: As others said, there was no pretension, but they were both personable and professional at the same time. I wish I'd got the name of the guy who helped me (the sales receipt only says "DYOUG") but he made the purchase very easy and helpful. He was great, and even found me a box for the new bass. He helped me out to my car with my new products (I also bought a small amp), and answered all my questions. It was a great experience working with unpretentious, knowledgeable, helpful and real people like this person, and the first guy who set me up with the guitar before. I had Pat the guitar tech working on a guitar of mine. One of the parts I had brought in for him to put in the guitar was a dud, and it took the manufacture ages to fix the issue and send a replacement part. Pat was way more than accommodating, tried to work around the issue as best he could, and was amazing to work with. I would absolutely 10/10 recommend bringing your guitars to him to get fixed at L&M. My guitar is now finished and I couldn't be more happy with the service I received. Purchased a Taylor at Royal Vista, Calgary and what a fun time that was. Tracey was terrific and even more fun were the boys joining in our conversation about Bands we all had seen. You can't single out a L&M Store because they're all like this no matter where you go in this great country. They have created a culture decades ago that lingers today. Went in to look around to see what type of items they sell and what they would recommend for a child. I get it, they are a music store but didn't expect that they would have so much stuff? Huge store and selection. I am not a musician and know virtually nothing about instruments. I looked around for a while and even though the store was quiet, wasn't asked for help or greeted by any staff. Not that I was in the market to buy anything, but for someone who knows nothing it would have been nice. I was hoping to find out what they would recommend as an instrument for a child who is interested in music, but not a particular instrument. Since the staff at the counter didn't look inviting, after a few laps around the store, I just decided to leave. Very clean and well organized store. Lots of selection. Lots of parking. Too bad the staff weren't a bit more welcoming or looking to assist a potential customer. Rate - 3.5 stars read more

Let's face it. Musicians, like other passionate people, can sometimes be elitest and snobby sometimes. "You play *that* brand of guitar? Ugggh!" "You only know power chords? Le sigh!" I'm very much a beginner at guitar but when I go to Long & McQuade I get treated like Slash or Jimmy Page. I can't always properly explain what I want but the staff is always very patient and listens so they understand my needs. They never try to over sell or push expensive products on me. Quite often they undersell! Just yesterday I went to the Royal Vista Drive branch and was looking for a "quiet" amp. (Don't laugh!) I went in with a budget of $400. The guy who was helping me said there is no way I need to spend that much and recommended a $110 amp that was just perfect! Most guitarists are well aware of the affliction called G.A.S. (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome). Long & McQuade are very sympathetic and have often told me "No, you don't need another guitar. The one you have is perfectly fine.". I leave with my bank account in tact. If you are looking for a place where snobbery and elitism is left at the door .. go to Long & McQuade. read more

Great looking store. Huge selection. Just always feel like nobody cares that you are in there. I commonly peruse the guitars, but have never been honestly offered any kind of assistance. Sales people his behind counters, with the exception of keyboard area, where they always ask to help. Pricing is very competitive with other music shops. I was lucky enough seven years ago to piggyback on my girlfriends advice and research, she is a perfectionist and had an extremely musical son and also a massive massive fortune to spoil him rotten and she always does a ton of research on any kind of service for him... Fortunately she showed me her recommendation for a guitar lessons with Long And Mcquade and the amazing teacher in Toronto called Paul Buchinger. We adored Paul and his lessons for my awesome son who is 10 at the time and bonded immediately with Paul. For the last two years after moving to Calgary we were lucky enough to continue with Long And Mcquade and we met the amazing Guitar Teacher Casey. Casey once again bonded perfectly with James and they are enjoying an amazing relationship and growing in so many different music Hall directions I'm very proud of James and all the work he has achieved thanks to Long And Mcquade. I highly recommend to anyone for musical lessons of any type or any kind of musical instrument purchase. read more

The biggest plus here is the convenience for music-lovers in the NW. Really impressive collection of guitars and equipment as well, new and used! The service is far from something you'd write home about, but the employees are never negligent and won't bother you much if all you really want to do is play a couple of guitars! L&M has always been the the tops in my book. It's always clean, well lit and generally located in areas that are safe. 9 times of 10 there is ample assistance. They are not like the old Future Shop. There are no hovering sales people trying to make their living on commission. I like that personally. Maybe that's why some people think the customer service is bad? I'm the type to just say.. "hey" when I need assistance.... not pansy around and try to send a magical vibe that I'm interested in something. There's not a lot of glitz at L&M and that's what I like. Gibson, Fender a few others. Go to that big warehouse store that's closing... it was always full mid-level junk that looked better than it played. Not here... there's entry level stuff of course... under $400 entry $500 - $1200 mid to pro-am - and then the good stuff starts (guitars). I price compare them to amazon for everything, and only once in 20 recent purchases did I need to point out a price difference, and that was just $20. I will always purchase from bricks and mortar stores unless I just can't get a product. The people that work there support the economies that support my business. I am beyond appalled at how little attention anyone paid to me in the store today. I came in looking for some information on digital pianos and keyboards. It was a quiet Saturday afternoon and the store was nearly empty, and not a single person came to ask if they could help me with anything despite my best efforts to get eye contact. Finally I approached one person who offered me no useful information (I knew more about digital pianos through my online research than he knew). I was willing to spend about a thousand dollars in the store today, but instead I will be giving my money to someone on kijiji. read more

Really like the customer service I get at this location. Paul B. (Manager) is awesome to deal with and goes out of his way to get product info and follow-up with a phone call. Although this is a smaller location, I feel the product selection for what I need is decent. I generally go out of my way for customer service so wouldn't mind going further away if needed to, but given their just a 5-10 min drive away makes it even better. read more

Decent selection and pretty well stocked. The staff were somewhat unfriendly and non-approachable when we were there, seeming to be interested in the computer or other employees more than the customers. When we finally got help finding some of the instruments we were looking for, the employee provided no advice or additional information, but instead the read us the price and wandered off to not be seen again for 20 minutes. Maybe we went on an off day, but i expected a little bit more from the staff. read more
