We just moved to lone pine and every time we go in there the employees follow me and my girlfriend around the store makes us feel way uncomfortable every time we pushed a shopping cart to our apartment and 2 employees followed us to our front door off our home . We were camping in Alabama Hills and needed to stock up after being on Death Valley for 3-nights. Pleasantly surprised at this local grocery store. The meat/produce/beer cave were all exceptional. I can't believe people give this place bad reviews. You have to appreciate that there is this store available in this small town. I stopped in a couple days ago when spending night at the Dow Villa. I would describe this as a quirky mountain town market. They had what we needed, but don't expect large town amenities or a huge selection of specific items. We did find a decent bottle of wine here though. Parking requires a trip up a side street and then on street parking is on either side. There were no prices on a majority of items, and empty shelves throughout the market. Not a big deal, just keep an open mind if you shop here and you'll be good. Reminded us of markers we've seen in Borrego Springs or Telluride. The check out woman was really nice, and unlocked our wine for us with a smile. 5 star service with a 4 star selection. Much to our surprise, the LP Market had everything we wanted and needed: fruit, veg, dairy, meat, wine, good coffee, staples. They even carry Nando's Perinaise! We made due with packaged cold cuts. Didn't see any fancy cheese (not a problem just an observation). All told I think I shopped here 3 times over our Christmas visit. They were even open Christmas morning. Staff were cheerful and helpful. Very grateful that we didn't have to drive 30 miles to get groceries! read more

How do people afford to live in this town and buy groceries, this place is a rip off. We were camping and passing through when we stopped by for a gallon of milk, and a loaf of bread. We ended up buying a 1/2 gallon at $4.39, we did not want to pay $6.50 for a gallon of milk. They had a loaf of white bread that was past its shelf life on clearance for $2.00. We also saw avocados for $2.49 each and a gallon of water for $2.39, also saw Farmer John sausages for $2.79. Next time, we will stop in Bishop at Vons. read more

I was car camping in Alabama Hills, and with a late start out from home, I figured I could just pick up food in Lone Pine. It was a good choice. I stopped by and picked up a nice and not expensive steak for dinner the first night, plus some marshmallows for the kids to roast and protein shake for breakfast the following day. For dinner the next night it was tri-tip and Jiffy Pop for the kids. Also Ice, beer, water, and firewood for the campsite. Overall, the prices were reasonable even considering the 'captive' customer base and the logistics of getting the food up here. Even the produce looked good. If you don't want to load up a cooler at home when you are headed up to Lone Pine, you should be able to get just about everything you need locally. read more

BEWARE! Their firewood was crazy smoky! As pretty and dry as it looked in it's neat little bundle It didn't light. We had to buy another bundle when we arrived at our campsite which lit instantly. The cashier was really friendly and fun in helping us. I think interacting with tourists has become a delight for the employees of the small town here. We appreciate seeing people and civilization after driving miles on the empty road and I'm sure they appreciate seeing new faces. Our cashier worked as a waitress at the restaurant behind the store and as an ambulance driver. She wore 3 hats in this small town. While she was our cashier I appreciated her jovial attitude and the fact that she offered up a ton of old newspapers to help us with our fire starting. Little did we know we were going to need more than just that small bit of paper. We should've taken the whole pile. read more

Joseph's Bi-Rite has been around Inyo County since God's great-grandmother was in diapers. The family is multi-millionaires many times over. If you like antique markets - before there were health departments, government standards, health and cleanliness laws and the like - you'll love this risky little patch of 1920s America. Don't expect to find anything fresh. Finding refrigerated products a year past their "best by" dates is common. If you want fresh meat, buy it in Ridgecrest or Mammoth. Expired meat, particularly expensive cuts, are recycled by wrapping them in tightly-taped brown paper bags and marked as "dark steaks". The local native Americans usually buy these, because they're cheap. There's a Bi-Rite in Bishop, too. Thankfully, it's not the only grocery in town, but they do have the same dirty practices Lone Pine has. Bottom line, bring a big cooler and stop in Mammoth or Ridgecrest for your grocery needs. Inyo County is famous for its miserably ineffective health department, and it's been obvious for many decades, from food stores to restaurant kitchens to campgrounds. read more

Where do you go when buying grub in Lone Pine? Joseph's Bi-Rite, of course. Now if you'd planned ahead and not forgotten any items for your camping trip, you probably would have saved a lot by buying your groceries in a major metropolitan area. But once you get to the Eastern Sierra and smack your forehead-- "Dang! I forgot the marshmallows!"-- you'll be glad the minimarts at the gas stations up and down I-395 aren't your only sources. Save some money and get a better selection by dropping into Josephs. There you'll find fellow touristas from all over, also looking to buy things they forgot on their trips. The locals will just give you a funny look for wearing your Gucci sunglasses in their store, but they won't do you any harm. If you just need to stop in for beer and a restroom stop, head to the back right hand side of the store. Restroom use is for paying customers only! On the way back to the register after relieving yourself and picking up a 12-pack of Bud Lite or other domestic swill, check out their selection of postcards and funny hats near the front. Or waltz on over to the left side and pick up a box of Fudgesickles. You'll be glad you did-- especially when it's 110 degrees outside. read more

After reading all the other reviews, I had to reflect on just how much this store has not changed. I lived in Lone Pine for several years, back in the 80s-90s. The store was pitiful at that time. Meat was not usable in many instances, their produce was so shabby that nobody in their right mind would buy it. The store employees were discourteous to most of their customers. I really felt sorry for some of the older local residents who had no transportation, so Joseph's was their only option. There was a small grocery store on the reservation, that was open for a few months. But Joseph's froze them out. Joseph's undercut their prices, and actually carried decent and meat and produce. But only until that store went out of business. I hope the owners have a special place reserved for them, upon their demise... read more

I've read many of these reviews, and the negative ones seem to be posted by folks from the big city...well if you're expecting Ralph's or Pavillions, you need to head back to the big city. This market has never let me down...I always find what I need...and I don't need to search for a parking spot, look for anyone willing to help, of sit in traffic to get there!! This small town market is everything I would expect, and more...the people actually SMILE!! But that seems to be infectious when you live in a small town!! When you consider that Lone Pine is a small desert town far from distribution centers, Josephs-bi-rite-market isn't that bad. Yes you need to check expiration dates and the produce isn't great, but it's a helluva lot better than the stores in Independence, or Olancha, or Death Valley. Improvise! Make due!
