A mixed bag in terms of available stock and pretty pricey. But it's pretty much the only game in town.

They have small, old fashioned shopping carts that are convenient and save you from having to carry your items in your arms. The meats in the cold case looked good and the prices weren't bad, at all. They have large bags of ice available (always an important "must have" for the camp ice chest!), plus some clever person also included frozen 1 gallon water jus for those who know that block ice lasts longer. At $1.99, these frozen jugs are a good economical choice for keeping your perishables cold. The wine selection was unremarkable. Unless you're used to bottom-shelf wines, you are probably going to be disappointed. The beer selection is much better, an you'll find a small selection of microbrews here, like stuff from Lagunitas and Mammoth Brewing Co. The produce selection was not large, but what was there looked well-trimmed and fresh. You will find some of the basic carrots, cabbages, limes, apples, and onions, but not the cilantro or other more specialized items. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's an old-time local grocery store that saves you from having to drive all the way to the next big town of Bishop to do basic grocery resupply.

They have some fresh produce like potatoes, onions and citrus like lemons. They have some alcoholic beverages in a refrigerated section, along with sodas and bottled teas. They have boxed and canned food. Some options do have pull tabs which was helpful since we didn't bring a can opener with us. Luckily I was able to buy ice cream, marshmallows and campfire forks to toast them. They also had firewood if you needed it and some lighter fuel to help speed things along. The cashier Dorla was sweet and friendly. They had little knickknacks at the checkout counter like postcards, coloring pencils that had the forest feeling. I was most excited about the small mason jars of jam. I bought an elderberry one to bring home with me after our trip and it is delicious. For $10 it was a nice memento, just be mindful of the small bits of umbel (stems) that are in the jam.

Sobif they can remove signs before closing that would be great. We had our fun in the sun and my boys and I stopped here to have something to eat. They offer free Wi-Fi. The restroom had giant mosquitoes and looked dirty. Customer service wasn't the best either. After ordering my food I didn't know because this was my first time here, but the chips that come with a meal will be located to your left, and if you order a drink you pick up your own cup on the left side of the soda machine. I say this to you because it wasn't told to me and after receiving my food I had to get up and grab it myself. The food was not good good but it wasn't horrible, with that being said I wouldn't recommend this place at all. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and asked for EASY CHEESE and got so much cheese. The chicken was like shredded and cooked in something because it wasn't just basic plain shredded chicken. The blt was ordered for my son who said the bread tasted gross and sandwich had no flavor. Now how the heck can anyone mess up a basic blt‍. I ordered basic hamburger. Lettuce and tomato were great, it had too much special sauce and the meat was just meat. Their potato salad is actually some of the best I've ever had but the macaroni salad now if you like food that you can chew with no flavor then I highly suggest ordering the mac salad lol. There's a first for everything and also a last and this location was definitely that for us. Why did we eat the food? Well we used a lot of energy and needed to refuel our body, plus I hate wasting money so I was not about to throw the food away.

Things to buy here for sure while you're there: - Pull Apart Bread - 8/10: different variations, but all sweet, gooey, decadent. It's like the traditional cinnamon roll's raunchy cousin. - Pastrami sandwich - 10/10: good lord this is delicious. Easily top 5 sandwiches I've ever had. Hefty and filling for sure. The meat isn't your run-of-the-mill, dry, salty pastrami that you'll get at your local deli. They use premium naval cuts that are lightly seasoned, juicy, fatty, and super tender. The Swiss is also soft and spongy, very similar to mozzarella. You'd be satisfied just eating this by itself. And the rye bread is artisinal elite level, as expected. Freshly baked and super soft. So damn good I nearly SCHAT my pants!! - Original Sheepherder Bread - 8.5/10: 100-plus year-old recipe. Tried and true. Great for sandwiches or even just toasted with whatever spread that floats your boat. Versatile and superb. Another thing to note: this place is fully staffed and they have their stuff together. So ordering and getting your stuff goes pretty fast even with the long lines. Super efficient, friendly staff and establishment. A great time was had by all.

When you gotta go, you gotta go I guess... But in fairness to the owners and employees, this is a gas station/convenience store... Not a public restroom facility. In sleepy little Independence, I have to imagine this place relies on mostly weary travelers stopping in for gasoline, a couple of sodas, a bag of snacks to make a living. Whether there is a sign or not, it's kind of courteous to scrape under the seats for a little bit of change, and buy a pack of gum or a Coke or something. Wish the proprietor a very nice rest of the day, kind of thing. As far as the guy behind the counter being rude, I sure cannot condone that either. You may have heard the expression, "the customer is always right"?... Well that ain't true, but the customer is still and always the customer. As a business owner, if you smile and nod at that guy that just went in and use $.50 with the toilet paper and paper towels, and did not buy anything... This time... They're probably more likely to stop in here on the downhill trip and buy something. Act like a troll to a potential future customer? They will not ever be one. Just saying... Anyway, we stopped here on the way home from Lake Crowley, to top off the tank on a very busy southbound 395 post-July 4 weekend drive. We bought a couple of bottles of soda, and a pack of jerky. No more expensive than just about any other gas station I've been to. My kids used the heck out of the bathroom, too. The fellow behind the counter was not saccharine sweet or anything, but cordial. Funny thing about the small-town business folk: they respond awfully well to common courtesy with a dash of kindness. Come to think of it, most people do. I also appreciated the relatively large parking lot and plenty of room to turn around with a small trailer. Some of the gas stations in towns up and down the 395 don'tfeature as much space. So that's a plus.

Don't go here to get gas ever!!! 2/21/20 10:15 pm…read moreI've never been to a gas station where I've had such issues. I entered my Vons number to get my discount per gallon as I always do, and then put my card in and entered the area code. Then I clicked the gas I wanted and placed the nozzle into the car only for the screen to display the message "replace nozzle and see cashier". What does that even mean? I went in and asked the guy and he had no idea what I was talking about. He came out and canceled my transaction. He "took care of it" I filled my car and he told me to come in and pay. So I did only for him to tell me my card has been declined. I just used it a couple of hours prior. So now I'm mad and confused. The other person in the car paid for the gas and realized we never got the Vons discount! That irritates me because I told the guy about the Vons discount and he said "he put it in". Which now talking to the other person about how much she paid we didn't get it. I called customer service regarding my card and it was cancelled. I'm not sure what happened but I am confused. I've driven this highway hundreds of times and I've never had that issue before. I'm not happy that this happened and it all comes down to this gas station for the "replace nozzle see cashier" message on the display. That's were it all went down. The guy at the front was hard to understand and couldn't discuss much with him which also complicated things. Never stopping at this chevron again.
