Gus' Jerky tempted me on my way up to Mammoth but not enough to make me stop. On the return leg the billboards finally wore me down and figured making a quick detour wouldn't be that bad. To be honest, it looked abandoned and wasn't sure if the signs were just left out. The interior was pretty small and it was filled with stuff I had seen around in the past few days: honeys, nuts and of course jerky. It looked like a very small convenience store that got rid of coolers. No-frills isn't enough to describe it, it was sparse. The gentleman behind the counter just kind of stood there and gave out samples of jerky. He basically didn't say anything until another group came in and he just said 'samples' the the flavors. I ended up getting two of the small bags of original and spicy. I couldn't see myself paying that much for the larger bags. The jerky was thinly sliced, like you could see through it but still shoe leather tough. It made me enough to almost swear off those attraction billboards. read more

Cute little Jerky shop close to Death Valley. Personally I rarely stop at little stores on the side of the road especially in small towns unless if there's a gas station or a bathroom around but my boyfriend and I remembered there was a sign an hour prior saying that there was a Jerky place 81 miles ahead. After remembering that ridiculous, but funny sign we decided to stop Gus's Fresh Jerky and I'm glad we did. As soon as we got out of the car we thought we were a part of middle America. With the God Bless sign and a lot of stickers that give this place a lot of personality. I was surprised by who was running the store as I would have thought there would be an older gentleman running the store, but it wasn't. We chose a few jerky options and went on our merry way. Unfortunately, I can't remember the flavors we bought but the jerky was pretty darn good. It's one of those, you gotta see it for yourself if you're nearby, but would I go out of the way to go back here again? Finally stopped here on my way up to Mammoth. I ended up buying the Sweet & Spicy & Teriyaki. I like the sweet & spicy, but feel that it's way over priced. Don't bother stopping here because there's only 4 different flavors to choose from and they over charge for their jerky. You are better off driving for another hour and stop at Erik Schatt's or even Mahogany Smoked Meats. It's ok. There is a very small selection of Jerky. I am very disappointed with the selection. As far as the ambiance it is an old run down shack with an outhouse straight of of Shrek in the back. I've stopped at this place a few months ago and bought some really good stuffed olives. On my way back to Reno a couple days ago I stopped to buy some. I walked in and there was a couple jars of olives that you can buy at your local grocery store. Essentially they had about Zero merchandise. A couple bags of Jerky hanging on wall. The man working there could barely speak English, and he said something about "Tomorrow." Maybe they are going out of business? As soon as the new hwy is finished it will bypass Olancha completely. After driving through here for 25+ years, I finally stopped in at Gus's. I had always stopped at Mahogany House in Bishop previously, which just has a cleaner looking shop. What Gus's lacks in architecture it more than makes up for with tasty jerky. It is really good and really expensive, even for jerky. If dried out beef (and turkey) aren't your thing, there are several flavored olives-- garlic stuffed, jalapeño stuffed, etc. Also not supermarket prices, but they're good. I don't mind spending an extra couple of bucks here to support a local business, and have something to chew on for a few clicks on the odometer. read more

We have been several times. The address says Olancha, but the road sign says that you are in the small town of Grant. The store and restroom building are excellent on the inside and have rugged exteriors. The cashier offered small samples of jerky. The cowboy jerky, dried cranberries, and honey are great. We weren't even hungry when we made the stop here, we just knew it was a popular one. Man were we glad we did. I love beef jerky, so when we saw the big beef jerky sign while we were driving, we slowed right away and found parking right in front of the store. We weren't the only one stopped. I walked inside and was greeted by a nice lady. I asked about their best sellers and she said "all the jerky's are best sellers." I like the confidence. She wasn't joking. I bought the teriyaki flavored jerky. I took my first bite and was amazed how soft and tender the meat was. It was bang! I might've been able to bite down on it even if I didn't have teeth. We bought the regular jerky and the sweet and spicy. The regular one was alright. Not worth the price because it was just okay. However the sweet and spicy was AMAZING. So fresh the sauce was still sticky. Thick soft pieces of jerky. Definitely worth every penny on that kind. We bought the 3 pack special. Cashier was nice and gave my kids some honey sticks. Eh... I've passed by Gus's several times heading to Mammoth and on the way back home. There's not much on the road and Gus's advertisment as "really good" caught my eye so my boyfriend and I decided to make a pit stop. I do appreciate that it's and mom and pop shop and they have a large variety of things besides jerky like different flavored olives. I also liked that they offered samples (unlike Alien Jerky) so you know what you're going to get. We ended up going with teriyaki and super spicy. I'm not going to completely bash the jerky because I enjoyed the moist and soft consistency but I think it lacked flavor - it's mediocre at best. It's pretty expensive for what you get too ($12 for 1). I honestly think jerky from your regular market is better than Gus's and probably wouldn't stop by again. read more
