First time here and my husband got me sold on the patty melt! Quite busy on a Saturday afternoon and had a big group. It was a little bit hard to find seating indoors that accommodates a large group but we made it happen. Service was excellent and food was exceptional. The patty melt was truly flavorful and juicy. Off roading the Kern Plateau last spring we stopped in for a beer. Immediately dug this funky cabin bar overlooking Kennedy Meadows. The saloon is surrounded by several smaller buildings for Pacific Crest Trail hikers passing through to camp, shower and rest. There were several hikers warming up and charging their phones when we arrived. Modest and cozy, the cabin is reminiscent of a rustic ski lodge. There's a large patio with a bandstand and panoramic scenic views. Seating is somewhat communal, picnic style, or else at the bar. Outdoor seating with plenty of nooks if you want more privacy. Large dirt parking lot. Nice craft beer selection, above average bar food menu. Standard service, order and pick up at the counter. We watched the sunset over a cold beer and tasty burger in the middle of nature. Cool destination spot. read more

Outside the place looks cute Inside is waaay to small to be comfortable. They're out of every food ever. Food was underdone & not worth the money we paid. In the back is trashed. Extremely run down. When taking our order the guy "helping" us was such a prick. So rude & disrespectful. I was taken back. Never been talked to by someone like I was a problem at their, restaurant lolll. This place was a hiker oasis! The food selection was decent greasy spoon type food with vegetarian and vegan options. They had a full bar, lively atmosphere, and great service. Free camping, free laundry, and free showers were available on site. It can get a bit loud at night but other than that it is a great place to prepare for the Sierra Section of the PacificCrestTrail. Don't act like disrespectful hiker trash and they will treat you wonderfully. They work hard and clean up after a lot of nasty hikers so clean up your mess, tip well, and say thank you! read more

Camping in the Sequoias? If you are going over Sherman Pass on Hwy 395 side, this is the place to stop and grab a bite. Don't let the sign fool you, the place inside is not nearly as nice at the sign indicates... that is except for the service and the food! Grumpy Bears is located on Sherman Pass road along with 2 other eateries. Other than these, I think the closest place is a Subway about 30 miles away, so if you are hungry stop here. Grump Bears is a simple rustic building, in a huge parking lot, a big bar, and a couple of tables. Apparently folks drinking in the parking had been a problem, considering all the "No Alcohol in the Parking Lot" signs posted. There is also a corral for the locals that decided horses are the preferred mode of transportation. The power for the place comes from a big diesel generator running in the back. I don't think they have landline service and cell signal is a definite no. They do however accept credit cards approved via a satellite link. Now, that is about as fancy as it gets! We ended here at the end of our Memorial Day camping trip tired and hungry from a long drive down Sherman Pass. We were greeted by a friendly and efficient server that offered to give the nine of us all separate checks. Nice!! I couldn't decide on the chicken Sandie or the patty melt and without hesitation she recommended the Patty Melt, so that was what I had with a side of macaroni salad and an ice tea. The Patty Melt was an excellent recommendation. The generous portion of ground beef was perfectly grilled and seasoned. Grilled onions, melted cheese and nicely browned bread completed this great lunch selection! Next time? You bet! Every year on Memorial Weekend. read more

This jewel of the Sierra is refuge from whatever the weather or walk. The patio view alone is worth a visit. Breakfast was two plates: one for the eggs, the bacon and the toast. The other plate was for a Monster pancake with a footprint overflowing the 12" plate And two fingers thick. The shock of the size (I didn't think I can eat the whole thing) is soon dispelled with the first bite of a large yet light, airy and delicious griddle cake with emphasis on CAKE. Cold milk helped down this menagerie. The owners and staff were friendly and helpful. Almost asked for a second pancake. read more

Stumbled on this place as it is the first place you will see after a long ride up the mountain from Highway 395 into Kennedy Meadows. It's very rustic and not much of a place to look at, but the couple working there who seemed to own the place were extremely helpful and friendly and cooked up nice hamburgers for us to enjoy. In a place like this, you need to take into consideration that you are in a pretty remote location. There is no electricity here, other than by generator, no cell phone service, etc. The owners were also very helpful in providing directions for us to follow on the rest of our journey. read more

Grumpy Bear is an iconic waypoint serving a wide array of bottle beers and some excellent food. On a whim, I ordered the fresh-made pizza and was overjoyed. Thin, perfect crust; excellent quality toppings... from a little place in the mountains where you wouldn't expect a pizza... of any kind. The hospitality of the owners is beyond measure; they're so great. They let us park our RVs in their ample parking lot for three days - a thing I would have happily paid for. Thanks, Grumpy Bear! My husband and I were on a road trip. We were searching for a place to eat. Not much out there but we came across this place. We stopped in I guess the locals come here because everyone seemed to know each other, a gathering place. We saw the menu board made our choice after finding a seat. We saw a woman bringing out drinks we thought she was the waitress. After a few minutes the bar tender announced if you want to order go to the register. So my husband placed our order. We ordered a sampler platter and 2 drinks. Its a hole in the wall kind of place. It took a little bit but not too long considering the fact it was pretty full. Everything from the fried mushrooms to chicken was yummy. We finished up our food and headed back on the road. My three star review was because it wasnt clear where to order and it would have been nice to be greeted upon entry. And also because its a rustic place, it could use a little more love. Maybe a few more repairs here and there to make it a little more enticing. My table trim was falling off and could have easily been glued on. But if your out there, and your hungry stop in. Great place! Scott and Kendra are keeping this historic restaurant open and they're doing a great job! Very cool owners and the food, drinks and conversation are really good (Please note, this isn't a fancy LA-type place; it's in the Sierra wilderness. I came here as a kid in the early 90s and the decor is the same). Kennedy Meadows is a tough place to do business (no electricity, etc) but they're keeping this place alive and well! I just want to say that the place and the owners were amazing, the food ( we ordered a pizza) was phenomenal and the owners were very caring and friendly. I mean I guess it's okay if you've been hiking for days and starving or for being the only restaurant in the middle of the wilderness. But for regular comparison, this place is dirty, unimpressive, and the food is less than average. Been coming up to Kennedy meadows for over ten years, since my in laws live up there. Just last year this place finally reopened, and I was not disappointed. A little rough when you walk in but please give it a minute. I find it hard to define just how happy I am with this place. Fun outdoor cooking as well as indoor grill with live music pool table and the coldest beer for miles. The true bonus of this place is the down home friendliness and kindness. I was in a very bad situation with no cell service for miles my wife and son were lost on their way up the mt.from LA at night and Scott (I believe the manager and his wife as well as a couple locals were very sincere in their desire to help me out. They really went above and beyond to help me with things like trying to figure out their location trying to help me contact them staying open extra late just for me and even running all generators full bore with all of the lights on so it could be easily seen. I did find my family and we had a teriffic labor day weekend. Thank you so very much it could have been very ugly but now WE cant wait for our next trip up there. read more

This is the best place to eat for everyone kids are welcome , the steaks are great an the salads are great .They have live music an are having a holloween party on sat. Oct. 29th. with costumes I would suggest this place to come to its 22 miles from 395 .
