Most of my international friends agree that cake icing here is excessively sweet. Not everyone has the time for making cake. Finally, I found that waitrose made a tasty cupcake with American-style icing. Still, the cake was dry, the icing though flavorful, was artificial, and left my tongue coated with vegetable fat. Then I heard of hummingbird café. I thought it was a dream come true, until I tasted; cake-dry, icing-tasteless, pricestupid. Luckily, I happened upon a girl shopping for supplies and fell in love with her cupcakes. Not just was I thrilled with the fact that she was a die-hard vegetarian who used only free-range and organic ingredients, but her price is nothing compared to the rest of the rip-off ventures popping up and around. As for the taste, well that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Moister than moist, (try her double chocolate chip made with Green and Black's 80% cocoa)! Love the icing, just like mom's (butter, sugar, skim milk, vanilla). Finally! Hope she's be able to compete with the numerous copycat cupcakes popping around with big budgets. Only we can help.

It's a small space, about the size of a coffee shop with no seating. I asked which options were gluten free and they only had two cupcake flavors. Had hoped there would be a bigger selection. The flavours of the day were Vanilla, Double Chocolate, Raspberry Ripple, Earl Grey, Banana Choc Chip, and Red Velvet and there were 2 flavours of each in each box of 12. I had the banana choc chip which was super yummy! The banana sponge was nice and moist and the choc chips gave a nice texture to it. I also tried the earl grey which was a bit different, but still good. The cake on both of them were great and the icing wasn't too sweet. These are great cupcakes and they were very reasonably priced. Wish I knew they had loyalty cards because I will defo be back to try out some more flavours!

In summary, the buttercream was AWFUL and made all my guests feel sick as it tasted entirely of butter. Also the sponge was very DRY. The cake looked good but the colours were very DULL compared to the pictures on their website. I drove an hour each way to collect the cake from their bakery in NW10. When I wrote to FLAVOURTOWN on the same day with feedback, they told me I was wrong and that they had already had several reorders for the same cake from that day. They said the only way they would consider any gesture of goodwill was if I took a slice of cake back to their baker. I declined. This company is very arrogant in their communications and the taste of their cakes was awful. The story below, however, was what made my experience at Peggy Porschen especially memorable... I decided within a few hours to go to London with no particular plans in mind for my first time in the city, lucked out with a last minute reservation at this very popular cafe for an impromptu birthday afternoon tea. Unexpectedly stayed till close after an amazing time with the nicest waitress who moved me to their best table at start, helped clean off sweater lint off the only nice clothes I scrappily packed for the short notice trip, patiently took so many pics of me all around the cafe's most aesthetic corners fully indulging my basic, and taught me how to properly eat a scone instead of my original brutish ways. When the waitress came to take my card near end of service, I quietly showed her a note I'd written her on my phone (tldr expressed gratitude for her kindness and for making my birthday joyful amidst a gloomy holiday season, offered to do a few things and asked which would serve her the most meaning). After reading the note, the waitress gave me a big hug which I happily accepted, then surprised me with tears streaming down her face as she told me she was actually having a really rough day till this. After she collected herself a bit and closed out the remaining customers, we chatted more in a private section and resonated on our philosophies around how we treat people. Before parting, I encouraged the young waitress (Akanksha) to please retain her precious human qualities that the world always needs more of (indirectly reminding myself the same). You never know when somebody is going through a rough time. For two strangers at Peggy Porschen on this particular day, a scrappy patron and a waitress serendipitously made each other's day a little brighter and heart feel a lot warmer.
