Chocolate Chip Brownie - death by chocolate
    Maciek D.

Borough Market really is a place of plenty and a demanding test in decisiveness. Fortunately there is Yelp to guide you like a compass in the gastronomical jungle. Seeing the arrow pointing towards a small but brightly coloured store I hurried to enter. Welcomed by rows of beautifully presented sweets I picked a carrot and passion fruit cake and a chocolate chip brownie. Both were very good but I particularly liked the balanced character of the carrot playing with freshness of the passion fruit. The brownie was chocolate on chocolate with chocolate but that was what the name announced so cannot complain really. Overall, great stuff!

This adorable little bakery is right near Borough market. If you like brownies, definitely give The Fudgepacker Brownie a try. It's soooo good. Chocolate and caramel perfection with toffee bits sprinkled on the top. Moist and oh-so decadent. I would suggest you buy at least two because you're going to want one to savor at home. Go. Trust me. Just go.

    Chocolate Curly Wurly cake!

This review is based on one cake and one cake only (because thats all I've eaten from here!)! For my graduation I got brought a chocolate layer cake from here. The chocolate Curly Wurly cake! Its really easy to order online (which we did) but my boyfriend also had to phone the 'cake hotline' for some adjustments and he found them to be very helpful. Its so easy - you choose your cake, decide on a message to ice on the cake and what decorations you want, decided on what colours you want these to be in then add glitter (or don't add glitter! But hey - who doesn't love glitter!?) Just to note - if its just a normal layer cake that you want they can normally make these with just one or two days notice, which I think is great because you never know when you might need cake! My boyfriend picked the cake up with no hassle and it was safety packed in a box with a gift card included. He said that the staff were lovely and were really efficient. So - the cake...was amazing! It looked amazing, it tasted amazing, and it still tasted amazing 3 days later! I love making cakes myself, but this is a really good choice for when you don't have the time to whip one up yourself. Thank you everyone who helped make my day perfect. X

When Nigella Lawson gives a cake place props, you know it's going to be good. A bakery of true whimsy and delight, their creations do nothing short of astound. Absolute masters with frosting and fondant - creating starfish and circus animals that would be at home in a gorgeously illustrated children's book. They are the antithesis to most bakers in the fact that there is nothing messy or haphazard about their presentation - even the smallest cutout is frosted with precision. Far too often, such immaculate looking cakes are not worth eating - as if all the effort went into the frosting façade and its edible purpose was beyond an afterthought. Happily, that is not so with Konditor and Cook; you can taste the rich quality of the organic butter and eggs used - even the texture is spot-on. Interestingly, this is also a good place to pick up German specialties (especially now that we've rolled into Christmastime). They've got peppery pfefferneusen and the most delectable citrusy almond cinnamon stars (zimtsterne).

I have a real thing for cake. Not only in how they taste but also how they look - I could spend hours looking in cake shops! Konditor and Cook in Borough Market is perfect when you want an extra special cake for a birthday, anniversary, congratulations or just to say thank you. They do a great selection of personalised cakes with every coloured icing imaginable (even sparkly icing). For a friend's birthday this year I bought her nine little individual cakes, each decorated with special items that she loves. I think she liked the cakes more than her present! The prices however are quite expensive but you can certainly guarantee a cake that will wow. You can also buy individual cakes for a treat (perhaps with their hot chocolate!). Oh and yes, they do taste as good as they look!

Konditor & Cook operate in a few venues across London; this small shop by Borough Market is one of their few standalone shops. Though small there are a couple of seats where you can sit in if you choose to. I went to Konditor & Cook today for lunch. I got a rather 'chi-chi' juice, a christmas (turkey etc.) sandwich, and a rasberry and custard muffin. The juice, apple and elderflower, was rather nice. The sandwich was okay; it tasted 'real' in that the cranberry sauce was tart and the turkey was a little dry. However, the muffin was definitely the winner; light, crumbly, moist in bits. The other things are alright, however, it's all about the cake. Get your other lunch bits from the market.

    Mmmmmm warm porridge and cafe!

Grabbed a great espresso without the giant wait next door. Amazing pastries and service. This should be the place with the lines.

I have walked past…read moreSweet for at least a year and often admired the pastries, but just never had the time to go in. Today I made the time. When I entered Sweet I was greeted by the staff and quickly took in a few silver tables and several wooden tables with stools. I ordered a goat cheese pastry puff and cappuccino. I was a bit annoyed that rather than ring me up, allow me to sit down and bring me my cappuccino, I was made to stand and wait until my drink order was finished. As I sat down, there was a mini rush. I was glad to have a seat because Sweet wasn't meant to hold a large crowd. The goat cheese puff was good; with each bit I could taste the goat cheese, meaning there was lots of goat cheese, yummy. The puff also had large tomatoes and a bit of basil, which added a nice flavor. The crust was light and flaky and I am sure I would have enjoyed the puff even more if it had been served warm. The cappuccino was also very good, but had a bit too much foam and not enough liquid for my taste. I like just a bit of foam and lots of liquid, next time I will request it that way. Overall Sweet was not bad, I would visit again, but doubt that I'd make it my regular boulangerie.

My only regret…read moreis I wish I had more people with me or I wish I was hungrier cuz I really wanted to order ALLLL the pastries! My husband and I decided to try for a table and we ended up waiting about 45 min - 1 hour to sit. There was a super short line for to-go pastries (and sometimes there was no line), so if you're pressed for time, definitely do that! I love how the Arome workers help move the line along and help people in line find tables. Also speaking of Arome, the AROMA was fantastic! It smelled to buttery and fantastic both inside and while waiting in line. I ended up trying: the iconic Honey Butter Toast, Black Sesame Mochi Cookie, and Almond and Chocolate Croissant, a Savory Croissant (I think Sausage and Cheese), a Chai, and a Matcha. Everything was SO GOOD. All the pastries were amazing. I'm glad we got a mix of sweet and savory things. Everything we had was buttery, flaky, intentional, and made with love. What you'll like the most will depend on your personal flavor preferences! Definitely give this place a try!

According to their website, they deliver "European excellence with Asian flair" which is really a great way to describe their pastries and the experience! Definitely the quality that you would expect with some of those Asian flavors. Here is what we tried: Chocolate Pistachio Escargot (5/5): Shaped in a snail shell, in between the flaky layers of pastry were luscious chocolate sprinkled with pistachio for nutty texture. Really enjoyed this one! Honey Butter Toast (4/5): Touted as their signature, I had high expectations for this. It is exactly as described which that slightly sweetness from the honey in a perfectly toasted milk bread. I did enjoy this a lot but also felt like it would benefit by having something else for texture or contrast. Chicken Butter Croissant (4/5): The croissant had the nice flaky layer with chewy interior. I loved the savory chicken sausage with the slightly sweet soy glaze that provided nice contrast and that Asian twist. When we got there a little after opening, there was no line but all the seats were taken as the place is quite limited on seats. While we were asked to wait for a little a bit outside, we did not have to wait too long. However, the line did end up getting longer as we were leaving and some ended up eating outside. Overall, if you are interested in tasting some tasty pastries, I would recommend Arome!
