Gluten free bakeries are always a MUST for me when I go to a new country! This one has many locations, so it was easy to coordinate a spot. It's a small space, about the size of a coffee shop with no seating. I asked which options were gluten free and they only had two cupcake flavors. Had hoped there would be a bigger selection. The server didn't seem super excited about working there, but our interaction was short. The cupcake as a little dry but the flavor and frosting were great. An easy and quick treat! read more

Paid about 15 pounds for two slices of cake and a small Coke. The customer service was pathetic. These morons gave me one fork for two slices of cake and I had to ask for it. They also gave only one napkin. I think they were racist because they didn't even speak to us. After we left, they were talking and joking with other people of their nationality. Hummingbird Bakery was great! During a recent visit to London I had the opportunity to stop in the South Kennsington location and tried three different cupcakes. I had the red velvet which I was told they were famous for and two others. All three cupcakes were so moist and they had tons of great flavor. Hummingbird also offers free wifi so you are able to log onto internet from using the free wifi and relax while enjoying coffee, sweets, and other goods. I saw someone getting a cake when I was in and was delighted to hear the people give the person instructions on how to heat the cake and get everything ready for serving. Next time I am in London I can't wait to come back to Hummingbird to try out more cupcakes and to sit outside and surf the web! read more

Ok. So any self respecting Londoner who's got a sweet tooth knows and enjoys this cupcake boutique. It's success is probably down to those London girls (and boys) who wanted their own piece of the NY Magnolia bakery action, inspired by those SATC girls. Step in, the Hummingbird. A place with enough brightly coloured cupcakes to make your eyes either bleed or at least need a checkup. Their cupcakes are legendary and their extensive selection of other cakes impressive. Yes, everyone knows about it now. Yes, you do feel slightly ripped off by the price. Yes, you're right to question the rainbow colours that can't possibly be produced by 'organic' means. Yes, they use way too much sugar in the icing ('frosting' for the Yanks), but do you know what? Who cares. A visit to the Hummingbird Bakery is to be savoured. Their cupcakes and other delicacies are to be devoured with friends and a large coffee (trust me, the caffeine and sugar rush are well worth it). Forget about the cupcake snobs or people who over-analyse these sugary delights. Cupcakes are about becoming a child again, and kids love sugar. Head down, dose up on the stuff and enjoy. In my opinion, this branch of Hummingbird (the other is in Portobello) is the nicest. Just like the cupcakes they serve, it's very cute. Inside, the pink and chocolate brown decor is cake coloured whilst the walls are dotted with dinky cake-related illustrations. The seats inside are comfy, crimson velvet and the patio balcony is a lovely place to sit if the weather's nice. Hummingbird is famous for buttercream frosting. American style, they certainly don't scrimp on topping, and all the cupcakes are finished with a good inch thick of the most delicious icing that will have you licking your fingers at the end. They not only look the part (candy coloured, some with handmade decorations) but the sponge is super moist and fluffy too. The last time I went I had a chocolate chip cupcake with cream-cheese butter frosting. It was heavenly! Although I think they're best known for cupcakes, they also sell slices of layer cake that are just like huge slabs of giant cupcake. The different sized boxes for you to fill and take away (fitting 2-24 cupcakes) are perfect for special occasions. Truly, truly scrumptious. read more

I'm a baker. An American baker. And this bakery claims to sell American style cupcakes. Yes, they seemed to measure up to other American bakeries [ie. Sprinkles], and as usual I was let down. It took me a bit to find the bakery, and I was so excited to try out some cupcakes. I even felt quite cute riding the tube back home with my little bag of cupcakes. But then when I decided to try the chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream I was so disappointed when it pretty much fell apart in my hands. I had to actually go get a fork to finish eating it. Maybe it had been sitting there too long and just went totally dry, or that's just how they are. The red velvet was a bit better, which I split with my brother when he got home. Overall though I don't know what happened. I was looking so forward to this bakery before I even booked my trip to London. Maybe I'm a bakery snob because I know I make better cupcakes than that. Holy heavenly sugar and carbs! I am so embarrassed to say I came here two days in a row during my stay in London. They have cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods in the most popular flavors and types! From the pink and brown decor to the yummy mix with coffee and tea this place screams indulgence. The staff greets you in their aprons and immediately you are their first priority. From the second you open the door and inhale the smell of sweet goodness they are there to help you forget the stress of your day. On my way to the airport I not only purchased another slice of cake (this time rainbow) but I decided to get a cupcake to share with my mum in the states. I got take away because it's cheaper and there wasn't any seating anyways..... It's amazing close to the south kensington tube station..surprisingly! Red Velvet: Whoa, what kinda frosting is this? A bit, well WAYYY too sweet for me!! And i love sweet things! So that was a no-go, initially I thought the cake part was going to be dry, but it was surprisingly very moist as you chew, a bit hard, but that's just the moisture I believe. The cake part is rather nice, better than Lola's BUT the frosting, Lola's beats this place by a mile! Plus, Lola's cupcakes but just a bit more pricier, maybe by 50 pence? Overall, I did not like this cupcake. Black Bottom: I should have known this was chocolate cake...hahaa, there is something else in there though, as I reached the end..it was harden cream cheese that is really sweet? This place has a really nice cosy feel inside and some tables and chairs outside in its position on the corner, opposite South Kensington tube station. But to be honest I'd consider going to Hull for these cakes and I don't even have a particularly sweet tooth. Humming Bird claims that its cakes are all cooked in the American tradition. I'm not really sure what that means - cake is cake surely but whatever it is that the Yanks bring to the party it is certainly worth having. They're really well known for their Red Velvet and when I was last in this was the cake that everyone wanted. After seeing so much good press and Celeste's excellent review, I decided that we would treat ourselves to a couple of cupcakes as we were going into London anyway. See other reviews ;) Anyhow, a very nice selection of cakes and cup cakes, Gluten free red velvet was had by Elle, whereas I had a salted caramel. Both were really delicious! Yes, fresh, tasty, really sweet, really rich and buttery, moist, and really chocolaty. We were tempted to sit back in the sun in there little outside seated area. (only two or three tables) but we had a busy day before us, so decided to take our cupcakes away. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Only drawback is the price, although it is London and they are good. We will be going back, if not just to sample the multitude of cakes! read more

The concept of this location is kind of funny to me. The whole reason (in my mind) that Hummingbird worked so well in Portobello was the fact that it was such a darling hole-in-the-wall bakery off the market... for people like me who don't regularly indulge in cupcakes, you could justify popping in here for a treat because the set-up and singularity of the shop was so precious you felt you *had* to have a cupcake. But this branch, and the fact that it's massive and freestanding, where can't even look properly into the windows over the wrought-iron fence, and that you're supposed to sit outside and look out over one of the uglier portions of Old Brompton Road - doesn't quite work for me - they've taken the sacredness out of the whole Hummingbird experience. Now it's just an anyday, everyday, "hey, I'll meet you at Hummingbird" place - nothing "special." Their cupcakes are good, but I've had mediocre luck with some of their other bakery... a ho-hum piece of fruit cake - or was it carrot? Sorry, it was so average, I forget what it was exactly... and a savory spinach muffin that was beyond tasteless - I threw it out after a couple bites. Let's just say, if I *needed* cupcakes from this Hummingbird branch, I would definitely do takeaway rather than sit in this behemoth that has lost all its charm. Before this weekend I had only had takeaway cupcakes form here before so I finally got a chance to eat in on Friday evening. They sell cakes, cupcakes and brownies, what could be better? I had the chocolate brownie with chocolate icing and sprinkles, it was so nice. And when i ordered a coke to go with it came in a glass bottle with a glass of ice, my heaven. They were really nice too, they weren't at all put out by our constant requests for more tap water which little bakeries tend not to love. My only complaint is that although they are filling they are pretty small for cupcakes, especially compared to Lola's in Selfridges. The decor is gorgeous though, really girly with framed cupcake pictures and red velvet armchairs. My cupcake was £1.85, my friend's chocolate brownie was £2.14 and my coke was £1.40, all money well spent I reckon. read more

This is an adorable bakery that makes a solid American style cupcake. I ordered a red velvet with cream cheese frosting and a vanilla with butter cream frosting. Plus, I also had the rocky road "cupcake" that was really a huge chocolate mass shaped as a cupcake filled with marshmallows, nuts, topped with chocolate sprinkles and surprisingly I think apricots or some kind of dried fruit. Delicious nonetheless! I could not give it a five star rating because it falls a little short of what I consider to be the perfect cupcake served at the oh so famous Magnolia's in NYC. I think to appeal to European taste, the cupcakes are not as sweet and the red velvet was not nearly as moist as one would expect a traditional red velvet to be known for. However, since American cupcakes are not in abundance in the UK, I was thrilled to stumble upon this bakery that gave me a little taste of home. The original London cupcake cafe looks to be surviving the credit crunch well and I'll tell you why... they didn't go in for any of this boom and bust cupcake inflation malarkey. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about - one day the cupcake is the size of small mug and coming back a year later the price is getting beyond that of a full lunch and the bloody cupcake is more or less the size of a full blown cake. What sort of cup size inflation is this?? Yep, too many cupcake makers seemed to have caught the Big Brother / Heat magazine fever and changed their elegant cup size from a B upto some god awful fake DD size in the bid to earn more cash from the baying public. (The Chantelles of cupcakes I do believe.) Well fuck that, and thank fuck for Hummingbird who's cups have remained the perfect size and have not lost their wonderful texture because of it. Sure, the whole cupcake thing is getting tired and the Hummingbird can get migraine-inducing on a busy day, but you have to give praise where it is due... this is the best cupcake in town, with silky sweet condensed-milk icing on oh-so-soft cake. Try the pumpkin special if they have it and do your best to bulldog-patrol the patio while your friend is ordering. A roadside seat is the ultimate prize at Hummingbird and will make that perfectly-sized cupcake taste all the more better. read more

If it's true that the majority of the English population are a fan of a good cupcake, then I guess that means the majority of the population need to come here. I have been informed and hinted to regarding how good these are from my girlfriend, my mum and my sister. I know my mum wants them as a gift. She cannot help but mention them everytime we pass a store. It was about time to try them myself. The store/cafe itself is quite small with only 2 or 3 tables to sit in. Outside on the street there are probably 4 or 5 more tables. Thankfully it was sunny so we didn't freeze outside, but obviously south Kensington isn't the most peaceful location to enjoy a cupcake, so the scenery wasn't ideal. We arrived last afternoon so certain items were no longer available, but what they had looked delicious. Looking back, I should have gone for the 'American cupcake' with a streak of bacon and syrup on top, but I went for the chocolate and peanut butter Whoopie pie. Amazing. I would say it is a bit pricey for what you get, but they are very good quality cupcakes. You can do takeaway here so don't think you need to sit in the cafe to get the experience. read more

This is a very cute spot. When you get your cupcake, you can eat it there or get it (adorably) in a Chinese take-away box. When I first moved to London, the estate agent was going on and on about the best things to do in the neighbourhood, and mentioned Hummingbird's red velvet cupcakes as one of the best local attractions. I was finally able to taste their cupcakes - they have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon. While their cupcakes are certainly very sweet, I appreciate that their frosting has a bit of tangy flavour to it so it's not sickeningly sweet. Not having a sweet tooth not being a non-cupcake aficionado, I love Yelp for pointing out little gems like the Hummingbird Bakery. Am I right in saying that cupcakes are an American obsession which is slowly translating itself across the Atlantic and in years to come, just like the indigenous red squirrels of today, we'll be creating special protected areas to try to stop the humble English custard tart from being wiped out by its more aggressive American cake cousin? From the outside, the cute arrangement of the different coloured tarts in the window display made me think it was an art gallery until the words Hummingbird Bakery over the shop triggered the latent Yelp memories. So I told my friend confidently that this was the best cupcake in town according to my knowledgeable Yelp friends and seeing as we were there, we should get some. He was also suitably impressed by the fact that they served Illy coffee. Well, the cupcakes were fluorescent but tasty. Sweet as expected and you could taste the difference in flavour between the cupcakes. I'll still always have space for that custard tart though. read more

Wow, those cupcakes! They may be expensive, but they're not overpriced. I've never tried their cakes, so this review is only based on cupcakes. I recently got to try their red velvet and cookies & cream cupcakes. The red velvet was easily my favorite. Truly, wow! First of all, it was gorgeous, no shocker there. But the taste was perfect as well. The cake was so moist and delicious, and the frosting so buttery. The cookies & cream was amazing as well, but red velvet was just mindblowing. I was also very impressed with the fact that I came in on a Sunday evening, 5 minutes before closing, and they still had a small selection. I don't know how long before my cupcakes were made, but there was so sign of them going said, and as I mentioned, they were perfect in taste. I'm not sure it's a place I would want to sit down and eat my cupcake though. It's pretty small inside, with only a few cramped tables. Well, their cupcakes are yummy, but honestly on some level what cupcakes aren't??? They are no NYC cupcake joint and they don't even come close to Angel bakery in Brighton (light and fluffy frosting goodness), I bought two cupcakes vanilla with chocolate frosting and vanilla with vanilla frosting and general consensus is frosting is too sweet, cake to dry to borderline old. There's a reason why this place is so well known and loved - their sweets are definitely a treat. When I stopped by last week, I got a little bit of everything to take home to have with family - a slice of the vanilla cake, red velvet cupcakes, some cheesecake brownies, etc. All were delicious! Only gripe is that this place is packed without fail - always. And it doesn't help that the place is so tiny - but that's no fault of Hummingbird's. I would definitely recommend getting "take away" as there isn't much seating, or standing space for that matter, on your average Saturday afternoon. The cupcakes we ordered were very good and moisty, even the day after (Oreo cupcake and Pink Champagne, 2,95£/each). I have been disappointed however by the slice of Red Velvet cake I asked (4,95£). The frosting was good, but the cake itself was rather dry (we ate it a couple hours after buying it).
