GF Red Velvet
Aaron S.

LOLA's Cupcake and Coffee Bar is located in the Selfridges Food Hall, on Oxford Street in London. I was drawn in having heard good things about the brand before and seeing multiple cupcakes on offer, I opted for the gluten-free Red Velvet with it being amongst my favourites from my time in Madrid, where I had to order one every-day at the fantastic gluten-free bakery Celicioso, but that's a different story. I wanted the same high standards, and that's what I expected, this is one of the larger locations in Selfridges with it having its' own seating, which is rare in the Food Hall, so rare that you have to pay an extra 50p - £1 for the privilege, which I find to be unfair, the cupcakes are already expensive and high-end, if you're buying something you shouldn't be charged that much more, especially around 25% just to have a table. The staff seemed really rude, they barely spoke to me or made recommendations, and they weren't even busy, they originally misunderstood the cake I wanted. My GF red velvet cake came to around £3.35 which is pretty pricey but it is a high-end product in a high-end store, I found the sponge to taste far too dry and it was a little flaky, meanwhile the icing did provide moisture but it was too thick, sticky and perhaps too much, it made it too sweet, I was stuck, the cake without the icing would be too dry, but with it, it'd be messy, too sweet and unpleasant. High-end prices but for low-end quality and low-end service. I would have given a bonus star for having seating, but the only people allowed to use it unlike EAT across the way are LOLA's customers if they pay MORE (I get that, just not paying more) and that just isn't worth it for me. 1*

Stumbled upon this cute cupcake shop in Selfridges Food Hall! A must try, the mini cupcakes are soo cute and delicious, packed with flavor. Ordered the passionfruit and chocolate heaven cupcakes, loved both of them. Wished we had tried more flavors but we were stuffed after a big dinner!

Frosting is excellent. Cake is disgusting. Literally threw away over half the cupcake.

Kinda on the dry side so hoping the regular versions are much better. Wished there was more strawberry flavor in the strawberries and cream cupcake but omg the cream cheese icing on the red velvet cupcake is delish (nice subtle tang and not overly sweet)! As for the New York cookies, I wouldn't say they're really Levain-like, but standing on their own they're still good cookies! Missing the crispy exterior but the interior is nicely soft and slightly gooey. I specifically tried the choc chip cookie (standard taste) and the cookies & cream cookie (I really enjoyed this one! Fan of the trickles of white chocolate ganache). Service was a bit cold. The lady who assisted me was no-smiles and there was conveyor-like communication from her. What I will give props to (and I wished more bakeries did this) is that she asked if I had any food allergies before confirming my order.

I think every American mother/daughter duo was checking this place out for lunch or high tea. Mom and I opted for the lunch experience in the room called "The Glade." 3 courses, for a very reasonable price. Something like 36 pounds if I remember correctly. We did this over the more pricey high tea, but that certainly looked like a good time as well. That dining room was gorgeous. The food was pretty good. Nothing that absolutely blew my socks off, except for the strawberry dessert. Everything was certainly well done, though. I mean, there's a restaurant with 3 Michelin stars upstairs - the food should be good! Would def return with new people that hadn't been before.

Those damn English scones were some of the best I've ever had - clotted cream and jam! Heavenly. Dinner in the Gallery was fun and delish as well. We started with the Korean tofu dumplings + beetroot carpaccio, both were light, perfectly seasoned and lovely starters. Mushroom arancini with carrot ginger coconut broth was well balanced and craveable. Cod brandade was delicious as well but a bit heavy, could only eat half. Pistachio chocolate peanut ganache was the perfect end to a lovely meal. It's a visual spectacle in the best way, and service was lovely as well. I wasn't sure if it could live up to the IG hype but it was fun and delicious!
