I recently attended a company retreat here. The hotel was fairly nice and recently renovated. My only complaint about the room was the shower water getting cool and water pooling while showering. The bed was comfy and everything seemed clean. The restaurant was mediocre. They had large portion sizes, so you won't be hungry, and the prices are great, but the quality was on par with typical bar food. read more

It's a beautiful park even with all the storm debris that still needs to be cleaned up. The front desk, food service, and bartenders are super nice and amazing. However, a hotel must provide hot water for showers and moderately warm bordering on cold water is unacceptable. I suggest to management to have the maintenance staff turn the hot water heaters up to provide an acceptable guest experience. read more

Visited 8/23-25/24 We went here for a family anniversary and it was a great time. First things first the scenery was great especially on the drive up gotta love the scenery. The restaurant connected to the hotel was probably one of the best parts I mostly got appetizers and I would thoroughly recommend the pretzels and the Nashville hot wings the restaurant on its own gets a 4/5 the main stain on it was the price but that is a bit of a problem for the amenities as a whole but I'll touch on that later. Throughout our 2 day (1 full day 2 half days) stay we went to the pool 3 or 4 times and it was the perfect temperature each time. Part of the way through the day we rented 2 tandem kayaks and a paddle boat which was fun the main problem is it was 20$ for 1 hour each which was a bit harsh but overall for that I got sunburned but it was a fun time.(I will say I bought a small Gatorade and it was almost 4$ so be prepared for high prices) The best part though was family and I had a great weekend celebrating my grandparents anniversary and just living life 4.5/5 stars would visit again (Don't turn the heat on in room 110 it smells like burning wax) read more

Stayed at the hotel for a family event. The pros: the hotel is recently renovated and a lot cleaner than I expected. The cons: the beds feel like they got missed in the renovations, and the drain in the tub got slower the longer we stayed there. We are at the restaurant once and the food wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to write home about. Pretty basic burgers and fries fare, but it was served hot and fresh. Our waitress was very busy but nice when she came to the table. The views out the hotel windows were very nice. read more

I was introduced to Montgomery Bell by attending a wedding there 4 years ago. I was so taken by the quiet charm of the place that I brought my wife there for a quick post- Christmas break. We loved it! We rested, hiked, following the well marked trails. This year we came and met Rachel, the hostess at the restaurant. Their menu was limited due to The down season, but we were treated like family by a wonderful hostess. The rooms were clean with a wonderful view. When we were preparing to leave, we discovered that we had a flat. We mentioned it to the desk and their maintenance man, Les Snow came and helped us change the tire! He brought an air compressor and helped jack the car up. He went above and beyond! We love this place and will absolutely come back. read more

Forget about what you remember or read about the old restaurant. The new restaurant is completely different and way better. Chef quality food at affordable prices in a dressy-casual upbeat atmosphere that's comfortable for all. Full bar with quality bourbon and wine. Generous appetizers. A hidden gem that won't be hidden long when warmer weather arrives as they have a large string lit patio that will be perfect for a summer night out. As with many restaurants they are having difficulty finding employees and being new they still have some polishing to do, but there's potential for 5 stars in the near future. read more

I used to love this restaurant. I really did. Every time we go back here their hours shrink, their menu gets smaller (not always a bad thing but in this case, the meals they chose don't fill the typical things everyone in the group wants), and their prices go up. My first impression was the free bread. It was clearly frozen pre-made rolls and when I grabbed one and cut through it it was basically raw dough throughout. Not every bun was raw throughout but all of them had varying amounts of undercooked parts. My girlfriend had the chicken alfredo. It was $25 after tax and tip ($19 before tax+tip). They clearly used parmesan cheese from the bag because the top was garnished with it and the entire sauce was greasy and broken because of it. My Grandmother had the Beyond burger (there is nothing on the menu to explain what that is and I assumed she knew what it was. She was ok with what it was after I explained it but that's still an issue.) I had a regular burger. When the burgers came out they were not marked so our poor server had to guess which one was which. She guessed wrong and I ended up taking a bite of the Beyond burger. The regular burger was fine overall but for $20 post tax+tip ($15 before tax+tip) it was abysmal. It came with 2 sides and I went for the sweet potato fries and the coleslaw (I would have gone for the seasonal veggie if it weren't a general frozen vegetable mix). I found out at the moment of ordering that the sweet potato fries no longer came with marshmallow sauce (It used to be my favorite item on the menu). The coleslaw was clearly pre-made and mediocre at best. Overall the portion was GINORMOUS. I will give them that even though their prices are high they do give you a decent amount of food. My Girlfriend's grandmother didn't see anything on the menu that she wanted or that she wanted to pay for (The average meal on the menu was $22 pre tax+tip ($29 post tax+tip). Instead, she got the appetizer wings as a meal instead. And I will admit that the wings were very good. I know this because there were so many freaking wings she couldn't eat more than 2 and she was trying to pass them around to the entire table. I think there are a lot of issues at this restaurant. I think the person in charge of the food cost of the restaurant has lost their mind. I think the person deciding the menu is far too pretentious. Specifically, they make certain parts of the menu super fancy and skimp on other parts to be able to execute the fancy parts. The other big issue is staffing. They are very obviously understaffed leading to fewer and fewer times that they can be open and I understand that but if the restaurant focused on basic cooking principles at reasonable rates they would not need as large of a staff. The wing appetizer was super fancy and clearly done in-house but they also had alfredo sauce made with pre-shredded parmesan. If you are a fine dining establishment like their costs suggest you can't do that and if you are an affordable date-night destination you can't do those prices. All of our portions were GINORMOUS and almost none of us finished our food. If instead of charging $22 for a massive plate of food they charged $12-$15 for a reasonable plate with one small side(instead of 2 massive side portions) and had a burger for $10 we all would have been happy with the price, quality aside. Finally my biggest issue. On the bottom of my receipt, there was a link to take their survey. It had a clear spelling issue in the link and multiple random spaces. Almost like the link was designed to be confusing. I tried every possible permutation of the link removing spaces, swapping spaces for slashes, fixing grammatical errors, and leaving the grammatical errors in none of them linked to a website. I then started looking on review sites just to see if there was any better way to contact them. After a few other bad reviews, they left a phone number that supposedly went to the Director of Food and Beverage for the restaurant. It actually goes to the hotel reservation line which had no way to direct to another department or to leave a message. Just a robot telling me they aren't open right now even though I know that the hotel and restaurant are open right now. I think that's what drove me to write this elongated review the complete lack of caring about the customer's opinion or experience whatsoever. Do not eat here. read more

Valentines day 4 course meal (2/11/23). It was supposed to be a special night, a romantic dinner for two preceding a marriage proposal. Reservation was at 6:30, we were seated at 6:45, and then were completely ignored for 45 minutes. At one point I stood up and went to the bar to get us drinks but was also ignored there. My soon-to-be fiancée and I were about to leave to go eat somewhere that actually pays attention to its patrons. We were finally approached by a hostess who asked if we had been helped yet--a full HOUR after our reservation time. Honestly, how is this ok? It was like the staff didn't really prepare for the prospect of having customers show up to eat. Our table was not the only one stranded and hungry, and we ended up making friends with other couples who hadn't been served. A small silver lining in what was otherwise an abysmal dining experience. Nothing was comped as a courtesy, barely any acknowledgment that our dinner took 2 hours to get to our table. No acknowledgement that we were carded AFTER already having a round of drinks (what??). Broccoli tasted like it was microwaved in a plastic bag. We asked for desserts to go because we knew they were closing at 9pm and we were trying to be respectful of their time, even though that sentiment was not shared mutually. Management should be mortified and utterly embarrassed. This was exactly how to not execute a special occasion meal, or any meal for that matter. 100 dollars for this?? Just wow. read more

Stayed two nights for a conference. Got up the first morning and the toilet didn't work. Went to the desk, was told maintenance would not be on site until seven in the morning. Was told I could use the lobby in the meantime. There were no other rooms available and no manager on call. The issue appeared to be resolved fairly quickly. In the middle of the next night the toilet was not working. Again no maintenance personel on-site, no manager on call. The guy at the front desk came to the room, got the toilet working and I was told I would have to continue to fix it after use until maintenance arrived at seven. I asked why it had not been fixed correctly the day prior and was told that I would have to ask mantince. I checked out early that morning to find lodging with a working toilet in the room. A hotel room with a working toilet is pretty basic stuff. read more

Absolutely awful service. Not only were they not attentive to the wedding we were at, they didn't serve food until an hour and a half later than they were supposed to. They said there would be appetizers, they never came. The food was absolutely awful. I would rather eat 2 week old McDonalds. They didn't even give us salt for our baked potatoes.. who doesn't salt their baked potato?! Then the staff threw the wedding cake in the trash. Yup.. they threw the wedding cake in the trash! The couple complained about the horrible service and the manager just denied it all. So unprofessional. These people don't know what they're doing. A group of kindergarteners would have done better. Avoid this place at al costs. Do not waste your money. You've been warned. read more

Restaurant is kinda always lacking. We don't expect 5 star or anything, but it really needs improvement. Lunch and dinner very mediocre. Breakfast pretty decent. Service has been the few times we've been, so subpar. No menus given. No drinks. No silverware. We literally have to wait to eat because we have no silverware. Service sooooo slow! And, these times appear to be at kinda slow times. We eat here because we are camping and like to get into restaurant.....but we are not sure we will go back. read more

Took a day and overnight trip here with my husband and three kids. It's a beautiful setting, and nice quaint room! We hiked easy trails with our kids during the day and then checked in during the early evening. Word of advice---- call ahead and check what amenities are actually available before you book. We chose to get a smaller room because they have a restaurant/bar downstairs, and it saved us from packing tons of food (kids eat a lot after hiking around!). Unfortunately when we arrived we learned they only have limited hours, and were not open for the days we reserved. now, we're a pretty flex and adaptable crew. We were disappointed and had the choice to door dash or drive into town. Big whoop, first world problems. However, the front desk attendants really need to improve their customer service. No apology, just shrugged shoulders. When we asked about having a fire, as advertised in the reservation summary, they said it's a $10 donation to use the 1 outdoor wood fireplace or use the 1 propane fireplace outside. Propane fireplace didn't work. again, shrugged shoulders from front desk. Got souvenirs from their gift shop, and when we went to pay they told us even though something was advertised for $2 on the set display it was on, they actually charge $3 because "it didn't make sense" for their staff to create a second display of the same type of items. I was kind about it, but explained that as a mom who gave her kids a spending limit, it's frustrating that it makes "more sense" to advertise the wrong price to consumers. Guess what the response was? Nothing. He didn't care. Again, not a huge deal in itself but in conjunction with the other negative customer service experiences, and despite wanting to support state parks, I won't be recommending the lodge to friends. I'll tell them to enjoy the park and the nice rangers, but not rely on the lodge for their experience. what a bummer. read more

Hospitality is the key to hotel business. Yet it was hard to find at the Montgomery Bell Inn & Suites. That's probably because the staff at the hotel are state employees, as I was informed, and not hospitality professionals. That was clear. The only halfway friendly people I encountered during my week long stay were the maid, maintenance men, and one front desk employee. Everyone else was either rude or, well, just rude. Some of the staff in the restaurant were just as bad, refusing to make special food to accommodate my daughter's food allergies, throwing a box at me and telling me to pick food from the buffet. SMH!! On the first two nights we had to call the maintenance men to retrieve large spiders from our room and on the third morning I killed two small roaches. I was told that the hotel doesn't have roaches and they were wood bugs, so I took a picture of a roach in the hallway by the elevators on the fourth day to prove that yes, they have roaches. I spent two days scrubbing everything after we got home just to make sure that I didn't bring anything home with me. I realize that the hotel is situated in the middle of a state park and critters happen, but it's not acceptable to have cobwebs in the room, a coffee stain on the sink, and I don't even want to know what the brown stuff was that I scraped off the counter in the entryway. It was disgusting. If I were staying in a tent, at least I would expect the filth and bugs, but not in a hotel room that doesn't have wifi and is in a dank, creepy basement with hallway walls that look like they're caving in. I hope to plan a trip back to Tennessee soon, but I won't be returning to the Montgomery Bell Inn. read more

Valentines Day 2022 dinner they offered (very expensively) went terribly. Stood for over 2 hours after reservation time to eat cold, sub par food. Snubbed by new management that was apparently (or at least should have been) apologizing for the terrible evening they collected so much money for. The only good thing about the evening was I was with my love, and the room itself was clean and pretty okay. Everyone that night was disappointed and we were about 300$ less richer as a couple. I do not recommend the restaurant at the lodge whatsoever. The rooms are pretty nice. Do yourself a favor and get food from elsewhere. read more

Stayed in Room 409....view of the lake was basically blocked by trees. If you look at the photo at the header of this page you can see the trees outside the building ...the lake is on the other side of those trees so don't expect some great view of it from your room...ain't gonna happen. BTW...the brochures proclaim Lake Acorn to be "stunning"....ehhh....not so much. Pretty average lake...it's one of 3 man-made lakes in the park...and it looks man-made. I does have a very small sand-beach area if you want to take kids. It's barricaded off from the rest of the lake to keep the lake scum at bay. There's quite a bit of that on the lake...which is ok...but it's there. Strangely I saw almost zero wildlife and no birds the entire weekend around the lake area.No waterfowl...nothing. As for the room it's your typical modern hotel room with small fridge and patio with two tiny chairs. The chairs are VERY spartan metal and not particularly comfortable. No Adirondack chairs here. The pool is pretty nice if weird to get to. You can access it from the first and second floors. The pool lounge chairs are made of painted hard aluminum. You wouldn't think there would be much difference between vinyl and aluminum but once you try to lie down on these you'll know the difference....extremely hard and not fun. Take as many extra towels as you can if you want to be remotely comfortable. So if you just need a place to stay IN the park for your adventuring and don't expect lake views/high quality food/comfortable chairs then this place will work. read more

Our family has been coming to Montgomery Bell for 20+ years and we are very sad to say we will not be back. We stayed this past weekend, and were very disappointed. Our room at the Inn, restaurant, lobby and pool areas were all filthy. Our room had peeling wallpaper, wet stained carpet, old comforters on the bed, mold/scum in the showers. There are no exhaust fans in the bathrooms causing all of the moisture to sit in the room and settle into the carpet-gross! The hallways and lobby areas are no better with huge stains on the carpet and garbage sitting in every open corner. The food in the buffet in the restaurant is minimal, cold and tasteless. Not worth the price. The pool area has not been updated and there is an old filthy hot tub sitting out with wooden boards over it. When we checked out they tried to charge us an extra $50 for king size bed upgrades (which we did not have) and a bus rental (which we did not rent). It is very sad it seems that the state cannot afford the maintenance or staff to keep up this beautiful property. read more

We recently stayed at the Inn for 4 nights as it was convenient to Burns an area we just moved to. Hotel room was pretty nice as you could see all the hard renovation work they've just completed. Nice and quiet with beautiful scenery by the lake. We experienced very nice staff who was helpful from front desk to the restaurant. We would recommend to travelers who enjoy staying in park. This hotel is very old and outdated. Granted, this is run by the State, but I don't think it has been renovated since it has been built. Dirty carpets, rooms are in disrepair. Even simple things aren't fixed. For example, the placard for my room number was missing. Instead, my room number was written in Sharpie in the wall. I only stay here because I attend a conference here each year. The park is very nice. The Inn, not so much. read more

The food isn't the best, but the Rangers and hotel staff are super helpful and friendly and my room was clean and comfortable.

I'll start off by saying that it is such a privilege to be amidst such beauty without having to "rough it" in a tent, that I think we'll be back.. But... I'm hoping the hotel keeps up on their reviews so that they can take the following comments and make some much needed improvements. 1. We checked in as a family of 4 and only had 2 bath towels. 2. We asked for more bath towels and towels for swimming. Getting towels from them took asking 3 different people who responded curmudgeonly at best. They didn't seem to have towels for the pool at all and acted like they resented giving us any extra towels. 3. The drain in our bathtub didn't work, so we had to give our small children low-pressure showers (the showers aren't the best). The bathtub seemed to be falling apart somewhat. 4. Our beds didn't have fitted sheets. They had flat sheets that were tucked in and kept coming loose to expose the mattress in the middle of the night. Gross. 5. The hotel is basically just not kept up very well. The carpeting in the halls were massively stained and there was a lot of junk around the pool, stairways, etc. It looked like minor renovations were started and then abandoned. 6. The swimming pool needs some serious TLC. The indoor pool area is enclosed in glass and overlooking the beautiful Acorn Lake. Unfortunately, many of the windows obstructed the view because they were coated in a white lime scum or something like that. I was also disappointed that the hot tub was no longer functional and just sitting there all defunct and abandoned. The pool area in general was pretty shabby. Such a shame!! All that said, we LOVED our view of the lake, the trails, the swimming, and had a wonderful time. How often do you stay in a hotel that is set in such a breathtaking setting! The staff surprised me on how disrespectful they where to us, for a sweet sixteen party we came here to celebrate a nice time and all the staff where told in advance that we where going to have more then 3 people in one room. A couple of hours later, we all left for the pool so while an adult was sleeping in our room the cleaning staff came in and yes we where celebrating a birthday so yeah we had some trash but we where most definitely going to clean up but the cleaning staff called the room a "pig pen" and continued to make derogatory comments about how they thought no adult was staying here and how they are going to hate cleaning this room tomorrow, all while in fact an adult was in the room who they thought was asleep, even calling the adult who was sleeping a child. We had a puppy in the room in a little pen so he wouldn't destroy the room and they where yelling about the dog on how cute he was disregarding how an adult was sleeping in the room. The house keepers even mentioned they thought they smelled smoke coming from this room when we have done nothing of the sorts, we lit birthday candles on a birthday cake and they made virtually no smoke so to hear false accusations made about us by the staff is unacceptable. The adult who heard all this went to the front desk to complain to which they disrespected her by making it sound like it was her fault by saying such things as well you shouldn't have that many people in one room etc. They knew in advance that we where coming for a birthday party and had several people. We even took out our own trash with our own trash bags. We asked if we've gotten any complaints from other guest to find none. We asked them to take care of their housekeeping staff and they refused to do anything about the derogatory comments made about the adult in the room and about the state of the room. We've made little to no disruptions while they allow other guest children to run around behind other rooms patios without restraint and yet they choose to disrespect the room full of teenage girls because that's what we are "teenage girls". Because all teenage girls trash places and act rude. read more

My wife and I stayed here, and I know it's a state park, probably run on state funds and maybe a little profit. We took our dog with us so we had to stay on the first floor. Which was actually the basement to me, even though it walked onto ground level. In the hall there was a distinct smell, it wasn't in the room, but to have stay in certain part because you have pet. It was almost like third class. The bathroom was in major need of repair, the seat on the commode would not stay up. When my wife brushed her teeth the water did not run slow out of the sink it went no where. Had to find someone with a plunger to fix it. The floor had on carpet (I guess because of pets) so it was cold, glad I brought my house shoes. The buffet diner was WAY over priced just because it was Friday night and I guess because they had someone playing the piano. The food was ok but lukewarm at best. Very limited choices. The beds did not have fitted sheets so yes that was gross like other post. The breakfast was horrible, it was cold and not many choices at all. We have stayed at the inn at Fall Creek Falls and it was way better. read more
