I've got a 100 year old mortise lock that was stuck in the locked position. After a month (!) of trying everything, including taking the door of the hinges and damaging the wood around the lock, we decided to call these guys. I spoke initially to owner Barack and he told me his son Kevin would be out within an hour. Kevin showed up right on time, and had the door unlocked in two minutes for a very reasonable price. I recently bought a house and needed it to be re-keyed. I noticed that locksmith monkey had a bunch of great reviews and so I tried them out. EXCELLENT decision. I am not one to write reviews normally but I had to this time because they were so great. I had a total of three doors and one specialty door to re-key and they did it no problem and at an excellent price! They arrived on time and were very easy to deal with. Very good people here. One of my doors is a specialty door that he didn't have parts for at the time but he said no problem not to worry I can come back with the parts and change it. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. The driver / service guy (a tall, skinny, creepy looking guy with a big sweatshirt and glasses) came to a screeching halt one night on a dark street complaining to me that he couldn't figure out where I was when I locked my keys in my car. I gave him clear directions. He instantly berated me, hassled me, and was rude, rude, rude (in a way that seemed scary as a single woman on a dark street downtown at 11pm and nobody around to help me). He charged me 3x the price other places had quoted (my total being $130), saying I had to take it because he was there first. I should have driven away from this asshole, who decided to yell at me - the customer! - for calling him out on being combative and angry when all I had done is keep my mouth shut. He told me it was my fault for making him drive downtown from Gresham... that's your job, man. Being a 24-hour locksmith means driving around, helping people get out of a jam. Beware: I called a service (503) 594-7668 on 2/1/13 to help get me into my condo unit. I had lost my keys while running. The dispatcher was courteous and assured me a locksmith would arrive within 20 minutes and cost $39 for service + additional charge depending on effort required. Locksmith Monkey is the service that was dispatched. Sadly the locksmith arrived 1 hr. 20 minutes later with his 6 yr old daughter in tow. Before he would pick my door lock (which literally took no more than 3 minutes) he required I sign an invoice guaranteeing I pay $159. Given I was cold and wet from my previous run and because his daughter was there, I relented. I called the dispatch service the next Monday and was assured the manager, Jamal would return my call after investigating. Thus far, Jamal has not called me back and I've followed up 2 additional times. Lesson learned here but beware! read more

This is the sketchiest company I have ever had to deal with. A couple weeks ago I was quoted $300 to drill the lock of my apartment door, because my key was not working. It was the middle of the night and I had no other choice but to agree to it. One of them men asked if my windows to my apartment were open, and hopped on his van and climbed through my window. He spent minutes inside my apartment. Finally came out and told me I needed to pay $300, though NOTHING had been done. We argued about the price and he went and got his boss out of the van. They made me feel threatened and the boss told me that karma will be coming after me. They talked me down to $150, which is still completely ridiculous. They yelled, they slammed doors and then sped out of my apartment after I told them that I was calling the police. Fast forward 2 weeks and our company needed a locksmith to come out and fix the lock on our cash box. Unknowingly, our secretary called this same company. The "boss" showed up and quoted us $145. The owner went back and fourth with him and it ended with this guy telling him "whatever, have a good life." There was more to this story, but it is mostly just drama. We took our cash box in to a locksmith today and we were charged $20. We saved $125 by not being threatened into using this piece of sh*t company. They have a grade F on BBB. We were locked out of our apartment here in Beaverton, so we called and were told that it would take between 30-45 minutes for the locksmith to get here, and that it should probably cost around $60 depending on how easy a lock it is. We ended up waiting a little over an hour but remained understanding, we were just eager to get back inside. It took him about 30 seconds to unlock the door, and then he says that we owe $160. Cash only. We only have $100 cash in our apartment (we don't carry cash that often) so we give him what we have. He told us if we give him, personally, a good review on Yelp he'll let it slide. No, sorry, over an hour of wait time and $160 for a lock that takes 30 seconds to open is still not deserving of a good Yelp review. Especially when the only reason we needed a locksmith was because our apartment management office happened to be closed. Here's your review. read more

ZERO STARS: Here's what happened with the Monkey biz: ME: Locks keys inside trunk, on a Sunday morning, in the parking lot of a shopping mall. Looks on Google and calls first locksmith that pops up: LOCKSMITH MONKEY Dialogue: OWNER: $25 for locksmith to come out +$15 for unlocking. ME: OH so $40??? OWNER: Well the $15 is the starting cost depending on the car. (He said he couldn't specify price on car models) OK ignorant ME in my head: OH Toyota Corolla then should be easy. But if it's difficult then just a bit above $40 right? Locksmith arrives very quickly, within 15 minutes! HUGE PLUS! He looks at Corolla and after 2 seconds he says: OH this is gonna cost $125. You can pay CASH or 10% more if you use a credit card. How the hell did the OWNER NOT know a Corolla would cost $125, yet the locksmith monkey HE sent to me knew it in 5 seconds?? ME: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? $125 from $40??????????????????? ME in my head: I need to get this car moving ASAP so will pay now and cry later. I was desperate. (AND IGNORANT) Tech WAS DONE IN 5 MINUTES! Once I was no longer in a hurry I started calling other locksmiths because I felt I had been robbed. Indeed I had been. I got firm quotes from others, for Toyota Corollas for $49.99. Period. When I called the Locksmith Monkey owner to find out if the $125 charge was legit, and to complain about the way he was dishonest with his customers, or rather NOT UPFRONT ABOUT PRICING, he said "You're right, thank you for the feedback. If this ever happens again, call me and I will give you a 30% discount." The owner told me it was a family business, but if you check out their legal history, it ain't that good. Before using this company folks, read the other reviews on yelp, something is shady. I was ignorant and desperate and wish I had read the yelp reviews before calling them. When you call, they will tell you there is a $25 trip charge. Then $125 AND UP for the key, based upon make of vehicle. When you ask what the key charge is, they keep repeating this. I wanted to know so I wasn't caught up in something like what actually happened. In REALITY, they showed up (I was told 30-40 mins, but waited 2 hours for him to show) and the quoted amounts don't include the key, OR an extra programming charge. Those are the LABOR/SERVICE charges. I my case it was $60 for the key and another $129 to program it. This is classic bait and switch in the service sector. When I asked why they couldn't tell me the fees upfront (the programming part is a standard fee, he says) he tried to deflect, saying he has a laptop to pay for, and a Website he has to access for information. Come on. You know your fees up front and I asked for them! I understood the key cost varies. Oh and he didn't even get the key programmed right, I had to go to the dealer and get my keys done after all of that. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

Ilan was able to save the lock mechanism and replace the broken bolt portion of the lock, thus retaining the same key to match the other locks in the house. Last night, my key broke off in my trunk. I called around this morning when I got up to see if I could get it taken care of before heading in to work. I found these guys and asked if he'd be able to meet me at my car (which was about 10 minutes from my house) in half an hour. He said 30-45 minutes. This would have still given me a reasonable timeframe to get to work by 11am, even if the process of making a new key took up to 45 minutes. He quoted me $125 over the phone for the service call and the new key. I was there waiting at my car 30 minutes later, and nearly an hour after I'd called he still hadn't shown up. I called back to check his ETA and he said he'd be there in 8 minutes; it was another 15. I knew at this point I would be late for work, and although he was able to get me a new key, the entire process including a very lengthy checkout because I'd requested to pay via credit card (didn't happen to have $200 in cash on me) did take nearly 45 minutes. It ended up costing me $175 rather than the $125 I was quoted. I wanted to argue it but was already so late for work I couldn't take the time to do so. This was really a huge bummer on both counts of untimeliness and a very inaccurate price quote. read more

Bait and switch. I was told the cost would be 15 dollars for coming out plus 35 dollars to unlock my car. When they got there they said "Oh, well for that kind of lock we charge 125 dollars plus 15 dollar fee for coming out, but he 'kindly' reduced to to 85 dollars for unlocking the car and 15 for coming out. I have a 2001 Saturn, so it's not an exotic lock AND I told them what kind of car I had, so it's not like it was a surprise. The time it took them to open my car? less then a minute. read more

TL;DR - Expensive, but got the job done. I got locked out of my apartment. I had already called two other locksmiths and was getting very frustrated. So, this is the next service in line. I call them, they come over and the quote me $175. Very expensive. But I'm tired, I have to work in the morning, and I don't want to have to call someone else to come open the lock. The guy who comes over knows what he's doing. 5 minutes later, he opens the lock, he replaces the deadbolt (for 35 dollars more) and I pay him in cash. He also is familiar with the other person who came to my apartment and failed at opening the lock. We chat about her for a minute or two, and then he leaves. I get into my apartment, take a shower, sigh at how I'm $210 in the hole, update my mint.com account, and go to sleep in my warm, inviting bed. read more

I lost my single company car key due to taking several sets of other vehicle keys in and out of my pocket about 20 times during a business trip. I lost an electronic key FOB for my 2017 Mazda Miata. I scheduled an appointment after asking for a guarantee they could program a new FOB and also sent them a picture of my remaining key FOB with FCC ID an model number. I wanted to be sure I wasn't charged their customary $25 fee for an on site service call if they could not complete the service. The technician arrived an hour an a half late, but to his credit, he called me after he was 15 minutes late to let me know. After trying to program the new key for about an hour, the battery on my (brand new) Mazda gave out because the emergency flashers had to be left on during the programming process. The technician used jumper cables to partially restore the battery and tried again, unsuccessfully. The technician apologized and left, and I was not charged for the call, even though he spent almost two hours trying to program my key FOB. Later that day, the technician returned to my home and gave my wife the unprogrammed key FOB which he said could be programmed by the dealer, and doing so would save us money. He did not accept any payment for it and told us it was his way of "making it right." Later that evening, I got a text from the technician asking if I would be willing to let him try again. He had learned something new about my model car (which is a brand new 2017 model) that had changed from previous years and models. I agreed. The next day, the technician showed up (not late) and competed the programming and cutting of the mechanical part of the key. All worked as it should. He waived the $25 fee for an onsite visit. After all this, I found my missing key fob in a pair of pants with zipper pockets! So now I have 3 key fobs. But if I ever need another, I'll call the Locksmith monkey again. . read more

In googling locksmiths, MOST will add on a service fee, so just ask about total price when you call, as most locksmiths charge a service fee in addition to the the initial price of $25 plus per lock fee. I mentioned the price difference that the service fee added to the original phone quote, and I was pleased that they were very fair about this. They asked me what I was quoted and then asked me what I felt was a fair price when I explained I hadn't know about the service fees that I've read are standard with this industry. They worked with me on cost and really appreciated it. I was very pleased with them and found them fast, efficient, and very.
