All of the small details shined along with the clearly great sourcing mastermind behind this establishment. I started with the oysters. I was amazed with them their freshness and buttery taste and texture as well as a brilliant horseradish sauce that didn't overpower but rather added to the experience. As a main I had the rib-eye with a peppercorn topping. If there was any negative it only would be to the imagination of the sides which were chips /fries and onion rings with some salad leaves. But do not misunderstand me here the main star was clearly the ribeye. Not only cooked to perfection but the sourcing of the meat was incredible. This is no understatement as I eats steak multiple times a week, always ribeye and most of the time US prime. However this steak was incredible and the peppercorn sauce again did not overpower the steak but rather complimented it. I finished with the cheese plate and a glass of port. The cheese selection was spot on and I exceptionally enjoyed the blue. The chutney was probably the best accompaniment for the cheese selection. Crackers were ok and I could have used a toast but it didn't matter. Service was impeccable, even in a rushed setting it was perfect. All suggestions were spot on, never felt rushed and it always felt friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant and I would definitely come back and go out of my way to come back.

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. But we would return in a heartbeat.

My starter was home -made fried black pudding and my main course was outstanding Beef Wellington (both 5 stars). The Wellington was perfectly prepared, tender, with excellent ingredients while the black pudding was flavourful and crispy outside with tender inside. Everything else was excellent but I can't remember all of the details because I forgot to take pictures of the menu and other dishes. We all received complementary house-brewed ale. Bit of a difficult one to grade this time. Having been here a few years back for a work Christmas…read moredo, had another opportunity to return here for dinner with some colleagues. We specifically chose here due to my previous experience plus other reviews on here and elsewhere. The menu looked promising enough and it has a nice ambience, so we tried to book a table (online) for a specific time but could only get a reservation a little later. Didn't want to eat too late, but not the end of the world, so we thought the place would be busy with other diners... when we got there it was virtually empty. The staff were very friendly indeed, really cannot fault their service at all. However, the food we had can only be best described as average. It went down fine, but there was nothing really memorable about any of our meals. The food that came out was pretty much just what was stated on the menu i.e. a starter of scallops on a bed of chorizo, fried potatoes and salad was literally just that, nothing more. Similar for the mains: beef and ale pie with 'fat chips' turned out to be a pie with a basket of chips on the side that were out of a packet. I know it's being somewhat picky, but you would think a place like this would at least do their chips themselves. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding; as a STP afficionado, I have had a lot better elsewhere. Don't get us wrong, this wasn't a terrible meal by any means, we all just felt that there was something missing from this particular visit, which is why it's only 3* this time around. I will come back again, see if it was just a one-off, but I won't be hurrying back anytime soon. Food aside, I would recommend a trip the bar at the front of the place, had a nice feeling to it and a good range of drinks. Downstairs is a lovely private bar area, so it has potential for sure. Just can't quite put my finger on why it didn't really live up to expectations this time around.

The tasting menu was overall very good but uneven -- for example, the mackerel and sirloin were fantastic but the millefeuille was pretty average. Nothing was bad, however. Service was a bit uneven for a place of this price point and ambition (after all, they do keep mentioning being on the Michelin guide). Our server was confused by my wine bottle order and I had to correct her. Then she mixed up one of the wine pairings for one of our dinner companions, who opten for the pairing for each item on the tasting menu. And at some point throughout the evening, they just stopped collection our empty glasses so our table got cluttered. I still had a good experience overall, and I enjoyed my meal other than the dessert, but I would've expected a bit better service for a place of this caliber.

The restaurant is at the top of the building with windows from all directions. Even the restroom (the sink area, not the actual WC) had a nice view of the river/city. 2) The food was so elegant and presented as art - yet everything was very tasty. I enjoyed everything and the quantity and quality was perfect for my three course meal. and 3) Service was prompt and refilled our glasses often. For my meal I had the following: Starter: Mushroom Tartare Beverage: Frenchiess (Raspberry, Vanilla, Lime Apple Mocktail) Entree: Pork Dessert: Chocolate Mouse Honestly, this would be a great date location and/or a celebration meal for a graduation, promotion etc or if you're just wanting a good meal with a beautiful view a on regular Wednesday - It's a great spot! It's the sort of place you'd be more likely to find in London, and we're lucky that it's here. My fiancé took me here for dinner on the night that he proposed to me (!!) We had a reservation for a Wednesday night at 8. Definitely reserve, even on a weekday - it wasn't totally full up but at a place like this, you can't risk walking in! When we arrived they seated us downstairs in a casual seating area, where we were told we'd have a drink and decide which menu we wanted. We ordered a bottle of wine (many selections quite affordable - surprisingly), and opted out of the wine pairings with dinner as we'd already had loads to drink. We got the 7 course tasting menu (£65 per person - wine pairings would've been an additional £40). As we sipped our wine, we were brought our first appetizer - beautiful oysters served on a bed of seashells, and some chicken liver parfait. And a non-edible bowl filled with something that looked like seaweed, they poured broth over it to create this smoky scent and white smoke actually poured down over the table, for atmosphere. You know you're at a fancy place where they bring you something inedible as part of your course. After this, they took our wine upstairs where the main seating area is. The building is old and rustic, with exposed brick walls from the 16th century (so we were told). It has that cozy feel you get in an old building, smaller rooms and lower ceilings, etc. We then enjoyed the remainder of our courses over the next two hours or so - no sense telling you what we liked best as the menu no doubt changes seasonally and often. Almost nothing on the a la carte menu that they show on their website was in our tasting menu, it was a mostly totally unique menu. They cater to allergies and preferences even - I told them I didn't care for mushrooms and they left them off of 3 different dishes, each time I could hear the server saying "oh that's the one with no mushrooms." Nice touch! Service was very attentive and they explained each dish. The dishes were beautifully presented, like artwork on the plate. Some of the plates/bowls were quite fun - the soup was served in a tall, narrow bowl that was almost like a stone glass. Our favorite course was the onion-chorizo soup with house made bread. How ordinary does that sound? Yet it was STUNNING. I'd love to recreate that soup!! The fish courses were excellent, the quail was truly delectable, and I can still taste this sumptuous piece of foie gras when I close my eyes and remember. Everything tasted wonderful, nothing was overlooked at all. We skipped the cheese course (£8 per person if you go for it) as we really did get full, though all the courses were small. I think that quail is on the a la carte menu, by the by, as a first course. Go for it. Dessert was a very rich chocolate cake of some sort, my least favorite as I'm not a dessert person and it was so rich, but my fiancé loved it. We had another glass of wine at the end - they have some very unique wines by the glass including some from Uruguay and Lebanon. Yes, it's pricey - I think the bill came out to around £170 or so, for two. But you won't have another meal like it in town, and since it was the most special of all special occasions, it was worth it. Well, ask my fiancé if it was worth it, he treated me! It was a night I won't soon forget and you should absolutely spend a birthday, anniversary, or engagement dinner here!

We were worried it would be booked up, but there were free seats, so we grabbed one. We decided on some food and drinks and one of us headed to the bar to order. 20-30 minutes he hadnt returned and I began to wonder if something terrible had happened. No, it was just that the bar only had one person taking all the food and drink orders and thats how long it took to get an order in. Cut to another 30-45 minutes later and we still didnt have our food. The server told us several times that it was coming, but it just kept taking longer and longer. For some reason everyone else around us was arriving, ordered, getting their food and leaving in the time it took us to order and wait for our food. It was a mystery. We finally received our food and all was fine. I ordered a huge chicken roast and had a ton of chicken leftover. I HATE wasting food, so I asking if I could get some kind of container to bring it home and the server looked at me like I was a crazy person and said she would have to ask the chef. She then informed me that because of health and safety reasons (?) the chef said I could not take my leftover chicken. Let me just says that though I am American, I have lived in Europe for 9 years and I get that some places refuse to give you doggy bags, saying it is for 'health and safety', but really its just for looks and the chef's sense of pride. This is ridiculous and a huge waste of food. I should have just said OK and then wrapped the chicken in a napkin and taken it home anyway. This was the final straw on a long, semi-ridiculous trip to this place that ensured we will not be back.
