Pork Roll + Egg + Cheese
    Karen G.

I've always seen how busy Local 44 gets in the evenings and have been wanting to try the place for a while. I think I may have made a mistake to come for brunch instead of dinner as it was quite empty even during peak brunch times on a warm Saturday. I ordered the Pork Roll + Egg + Cheese and the Ghia Spritz. I was very excited to try the food when it came out and I would say that the home fries were perfectly fried, crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. The first few bites of the pork roll were also good, the everything bun was a fun experience. However, it quickly became overwhelmingly salty. Between the bun, cheese, egg, and pork, the taste was not very balanced and I was struggling to continue to eat. My friend who ordered the Shrimp & Grits had a similar experience. The initial bites were great but we both felt like our dishes was salt forward with no balance. We chose to sit outside and although the weather was nice, the tables weee not very stable on the concrete and we kept almost letting our drinks slip to the ground. Unsure if I'd come back to try their lunch menu but will likely not come back for their brunch.

This is was me and my friend's first time going to local 44 and it was delicious! Unfortunately we came for a happy hour but they don't really have much of a happy hour. They have some discounted prices on wine and beers and that's all. But fortunately the food was still worth the stay! We all first tried the Brussels sprouts and in unison said "MMMMMM" when we took our first bite. It was absolutely delicious. And thankfully not only were the Brussels sprouts delicious but EVERY single item we ordered was cooked and seasoned beautifully! The sake was also very delicious! It is a bit pricy but you do get to keep the bottle it comes in which can be useful for future use. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because the service could have been better. The host and our waiter threw the vibe off a bit. But the food is very worth returning

If you live anywhere near Local 44 and you want a good burger... they DEFINITELY have you covered. In my humble opinion, this burger ranks right up there with the burgers that get all of the attention in the city. It is seasoned perfectly, juicy, cooked just right and classic. Of course the fries here are some of my favorite, so there's that too.. but oh my gosh. This burger is one of my faves. And sometimes, on a Friday night, or any night you just need a burger. You should definitely make your way here.

This vibrant and romantic bar is located in my neighbourhood & really loved it. Went for the outdoor dining, they had outdoor heater too so didn't feel cold. The drinks were also good according to price. The waiter and servers were also cordial. The decor is decent and there's plenty of seating in and out. The food is a crapshoot. I've had the best and worst of every mainstay item. Stay away from specials, idk if the cooks make them up or if they're told what they are but they never have enough time to learn how to make it decent enough that it's worth serving. Some of the servers are absolutely wonderful, some of the servers are there to make a check. I used to be a weekly, sometimes multiple times a week visitor, now I only go if it's late and no other decent local options open.

Get the tofu bahn mi!! Decent outdoor seating and attentive staff. Should be notes that there is a fair amount of street action in this area.

Elevated bar food, friendly wait staff and local beer, that's what you have to look forward to at Local 44. The fries were my favorite part, Belgian style frites. The veggie burger was just okay. The kale salad surprised me, in a good way. A heaping amount of beets, but also subtle touches of heat with slices of fresh jalapeño mixed into the salad. To drink, I tried a local cider and a cocktail with kombucha and tequila. Solid all around!

Ive ended up at local 44 more nights in the past few months then i might have expected. I always loved this place but it kind of out of the blue became a semi-staple spot during my last month in philly. The drinks here are good and i think it's mayb the best spot in ucity/wphilly area for a good dive bar meal that kind of feels elevated cuz they use randomly fancy ingredients ? Idek its just really good and well made. I love the tofu banh mi and the fries with lots of malt vinegar. Initially i wasnt crazy about the veggie burger, but happenstance (i.e., they were out of banhmi) made it so i somehow ended up eating it two nights in a row, and it grew on me. Good spot to catch up w friends or have a lowkey date

Came in on a rainy night with my partner and still found that this place was decently full. Tbh im not sure why there aren't more glowing reviews about the food. I was truly in love with our meal. Although the dishes are simple, they were all very well done. The cauliflower and beet salad was shockingly my favorite thing. I intend to learn how to make this, I thought it so delicious. The jalapeños on our plate were very mild, so I'd be curious to know how this tastes when the jalapeños have more kick to them. My first impression of the lamb burger was that the patty seemed small for the bun, but then I realized the bun is so soft that you end up needing that ratio of bread to meat to have good support of the burger. I believe the onions were pickled, and I enjoyed the gentle acidity they brought to the lamb burger. I thought the cheeseburger would have nothing worth commenting on, but I was wrong. This cheeseburger featured some of the best pickles I've ever had. Crisp, fresh, and lightly pickled. I wondered if they made there in house. And the fries? Mm! Crispy, but soft. Our server was really sweet, and gave me beer recommendations. She didn't bat an eye at me sitting in the booth next to my partner for a little bit even though the table was small and intended to have one person on each edge. This place generally felt very queer friendly, which is no surprise given its in West Philly. We enjoyed the energetic vibe of this place at first, but I will say by the end of it the music was kind of loud for us. Throughout the conversation I felt like I was really having to project my voice to be heard. Still, I enjoyed every other aspect of this place so much that I didn't really mind. Would just keep in mind that it's a loud spot for the future.

The pub that I thought had their things together. I visited this place a few weeks ago, and know for sure I'll never go back, but I don't owe them any favors, so maybe I'll spare at least one more person from an unnecessary experience. I was not alone and my party enjoyed a meal there while I simply ate Brussel sprouts and ordered a burger to go, I didn't check them and this is my error, but I only live 5 minutes walking distance and called them as soon as I got home. To which I was hung up on, therefore I return and explain that I'd asked for no thousand island concoctions on my burger, and that they could please replace it with what I ordered, I was told yes and they eventually borrowed an additional half an hour. After this however, I presume someone assumed dishonesty in me or that I would not wait for my food, so in 30/45 minutes time the gentleman was surprised to still see me, and says, I'll just cancel the whole ticket from earlier. As if that solved my issue, the issue of me paying for food and not eating, I'd made a decision on what I'd eat and paid for it nearly 2 hours prior to him telling me that he wouldn't charge me or provide me with the one thing I ordered. To them I say good luck, cause they'll continue to do it without my support.

    Excited to try the apps!

Overall, Local 44 is a nice college divey joint that is casual and has both indoor bar seating and outdoor table seating. The food was ok overall but portions were very small for the price. Overall, I highly recommend the charred broccolini. I wish the mac and cheese had more flavor and the scallion hush puppies were very dry and not so flavorful. Next time, I would stick with just the broccolini. The prices however for such small "large plates" was a little disappointing. Two of us shared the portions and found ourselves a little hungry afterwards. I sat outside for my meal and the service was relatively fast considering it was packed inside due to the Eagles game. But even though it was early in the evening, we had many people come up to us asking for food, money, etc. So I would definitely recommend asking for a table close to the restaurant door or coming earlier in the day if sitting outside, but I understand this is not necessarily something the restaurant can control. I haven't tried the drinks, but I look forward to trying them next time!

FANTASTIC place. Totally recommend and would absolutely go back…read more Easy to make a reservation over the phone and our party of 5 was welcomed and brought to our table upstairs. The upstairs area has a chill vibe with some Mario-themed art as well as a TV. It seems that the kitchen is upstairs, so a lot of waiters were flying by out table to the staircase. Our waiter was pretty chill. Apparently an O's fan, he was excited to learn we're from Baltimore. Food was all fantastic. The style of fries isn't my preference, but they were decent. Other than that, I was blown away. Child #1 and Child #2 got some items from the Kids' menu - grilled cheese and cheeseburger. Bread and Butter appetizer. Is it expensive for just being bread and butter? Yes. Is it worth it? Also yes. The homemade bread is great, but combine it with honey butter with flaky salt, and it's incredible. Loads of reviews on Yelp talked about the sausage roll. GET IT. It's greasy and filling in all the right ways. Goes great with a beer. My wife got the burger and she found it to be very tasty. I got the Grilled Maitake Mushrooms dish and holy cow; it's perfect. Even if you're not a vegetarian (I'm not), you can appreciate this dish: crispy rice cake (not the dry kind from the store), tender baby bok choy, and of course the well-cooked mushrooms are tied together with black vinegar, garlic-whipped tofu (!), and a peanut sauce. A++ would absolutely get again. The food menu has some staples, but overall it does change nightly, so make sure you check it out before you come. Apparently, on Sundays, they do a different experimental flavor of wings. I was curious, but my stomach has only so much room, so I had to draw the line. There is a respectable drink menu. My wife got the blood orange mezcalita, which she liked, but thought the smoke flavor was more subtle than described. I got the Plum Fizz and would totally get it again. Pleasantly-sour with a nice fizz. It's a nice pub in a nice neighborhood of a major city - be prepared for prices to match. But it is absolutely worth it.

The bartenders were all so kind and nice and answered all of my questions. Apparently they do change some items on the menu and they do a martini and meatloaf Monday. I stuck with the burger and fries. When I tell you it was the best burger I've had in fairmount, I'm not exaggerating. I was expecting typical bar food but I was wrong. I will be back for sure and I'll be sure to tell all of my friends to go there as well. That was my favorite part, how interesting walking through each room was. Unfortunately, the service and food were problematic. We had a group, not huge by any means, but the group gratuity became an annoyance following the service. Most importantly, multiple people in the table were served undercooked fish--the inside of their salmon was completely raw. One of these guests also had a severe allergy, and was still given plates with that allergen after alerting the server multiple times. One of the pomegranate margaritas we got was undrinkably spicy. The staff did replace the salmon, but it was sad to see multiple members of our group get cold and undercooked food. Furthermore, our table set the reservation during the Fearless Restaurant week--but when we asked for the special menu advertised online, our server had no clue what we were talking about. He had to ask us what the items on the prix fixe menu were. And after all that, the multiple drinks each person at our table got, the mid-level set price for the 3-course special, we were still hungry. The portions for the fearless menu were really small. But, due to their menu prices, rather than order more I went home for a second dinner. I really wanted to like this restaurant, but I'm disappointed and underwhelmed. Vernick has been on our radar for a while; in addition to all its accolades throughout the years, a friend from high school worked as a chef here a few years ago, so we've been meaning to visit. We had early dinner res to make it to our show, and we were seated very quickly and right in front of the kitchen, an ideal spot. Service was spot on, checking in on us appropriately and being mindful of our time restrictions. We actually had a bunch of time in between finishing our meal and going to the show but never felt rushed, sign of great hospitality. I was also surprised and excited to receive a complimentary small dessert at the conclusion of our meal for my birthday - an unnecessary but appreciated touch. For food, we really relied on our waiter to guide us to the right number of dishes to order. The kitchen provided a small bite to kick off the meal - a gazpacho and pastry puff, a nice touch. We started our selections with the blue crab toast, which was so "meaty" and nicely paired with the lemon and tarragon. We then moved on to the yellow fin tuna, which featured cute crispy rice to give a little crunch. For some greens, we opted for the broccolini with golden raisins and pine nuts; what a fun combination! We were convinced to order a seasonal panzanella with peaches and peppers that was perfect for the season and hot weather, so we were grateful for the encouragement! To continue the summer produce trend, we also had the grilled romaine salad with strawberries and basil dressing, nice and refreshing. Lastly, for our main, we opted for the halibut with miso mushrooms and tomatoes. The fish was so light and flaky but paired excellently with the meaty mushrooms. We each enjoyed a cocktail with our meals (their selection offers something for everyone, including N/A options), which paired nicely as well. It seemed like a ton of food, but each plate is small enough that the menu lends itself to allow the diner to enjoy multiple dishes from the entire menu. We had a lovely dinner at Vernick, and the wait was well worth it. It is a price spot, but the quality of the food is well worth it. I love their focus on seasonal items for their various "sides" and small plates, and the "main" dishes were all so simple yet complex and intriguing. The hospitality was great, really allowing the memory of the evening to linger. I would love to revisit and to try the other Vernick spots in the near future!

It was a unique style that I enjoyed and much lighter than other calamari dishes I've had. The petite plateau was perfect for sharing among the 4 of us. Everything was fresh and delicious while being presented so beautifully. The cocktails I had were good. They were different from ones I typically order which I thought was fun to experiment with new flavors to see what I like. One had a pickle garnish and the other was with a non-smoky mezcal. For entrees, most of us got pasta which were all handmade and tasty. My favorite was the one with crab & vodka sauce. The cacio e Pepe & mushroom ones were also good. It was so gorgeous and topped with a sunflower seed praline & had tangy passionfruit sauce at the bottom which made for a flavor explosion. I was so impressed! But you are getting not only spectacular food, but exquisite service, a gorgeous and intimate environment and a long and lingering meal - they aren't rushing you out here, they want you to rest between courses and have an excellent experience. It's a set prix fix menu that changes regularly of seven courses plus an opening snack and two desserts. Portions are tiny but it adds up and you will not leave hungry! I am a vegetarian and they easily accommodated me with advanced notice. They also offer a wine pairing, which we skipped, but know friends have done it and said it was fabulous (but be forewarned... they give full pours so you will be very tipsy!). We saw some couples sharing a single wine pairing and that seemed like a smart idea. It's very hard to get a reservation- on the first of the month they open up reservations for the following month, and they go fast! It's on the second floor of an old townhouse so there are stairs to climb. The first floor is a bar with first come, first serve seating. At the bar they have a different menu with full sized portions. Can't wait to go back and try that out! Highly, highly recommend and I can't wait for an excuse to go back!

I was so excited to go to FSS after they won a Michelin star. However, I left disappointed and will…read morelikely not be returning. We got the tasting menu (with the additional lobster snack), and got 3 drinks total. After tax and tip, this meal cost us ~$600 dollars for 2 people. At that price point this should've been the best meal I've ever had in philly - or one of the best in my life tbh. But I was so disappointed in each dish. Almost everything fell flat to my palate. With small bite presentations such as this, I firmly believe that each bite needs to taste like a flavor bomb in my mouth. Instead, it all tasted very 2 dimensional and was severely lacking in some acidity or spice. Didn't even bother taking a picture of all the dishes. I don't believe FSS is on par with other Michelin star meals I've had, especially not at this price point. Overall, don't waste your money at FSS if you want to celebrate an occasion. You're honestly better off going to a starr restaurant and paying less than half the price ‍

Finally! No disappointment either, that's always best. Cherry on top, with my daycare bestie! Who…read morecan say that?! And if you can, bless UP! The space is warming, inviting and I love the farmhouse chic vibes. I was t there for the aesthetics, but it was lovely. Staff is super attentive, knowledgeable and sweet! JESS guided us through the lovely menu. I studied it prior, LOL, and she was on point! The experience was chill, love and yummy. Risotto with scallops and shrimp was phenomenal! Next time I'll ask to 86 that brown butter vinaigrette. The biscuits with the sublime butter was a great start along with the strawberry salad my GODSIS got. It was FRESH! We got different desserts to try and I'll be back to try them all. She got the mini donuts and according to her "they are not munchkins"! No these were special, because I tried them. Perfection. We shared the sweets and that butterscotch treat was perfect and here is where the service over stands! Thank you JESS! Can't wait to go back when it's warmer and sit out in the GARDEN! Lovely service, esthetics and vibes. Park nearby, enjoy and stroll the park. Can't wait to return. S T A R R

Red Lobster should take over in that department!! The shrimp & grits were DELICIOUS --10/10. The dessert was really good, too. I'll give it a 9/10 because I didn't get to enjoy much of it bc I left it in the fridge and forgot about it. But from what I tasted when I got it, I love that the lemon cake wasn't too tart considering the raspberry sorbet and lemon curd took on that role. And that mocktail sangria was delicious--OMG 12/10! Service-- the guy was great! No complaints. It was my friend's birthday and they came through with the cute birthday brownies for us to share. Ambiance-- it's a really cute place and I hope to sit in the back one day because it's really dope over there. I took myself on a tour .
