New Deck Tavern is a divey Irish pub/American restaurant on the UPenn campus which boasts surprisingly delicious, hearty food options, reasonably priced drinks, and trivia on Wednesdays (starting at 8 PM). --- I went to New Deck Tavern around 7 PM to eat dinner and join the trivia which starts at 8 PM. I was in a party of 4, and while the pub was packed, it was quick to get a table. The waitress was friendly and helped us decide on appetizers and entrees with recommendations. Although it was crowded, the food service was still relatively fast but at times it was hard to track down our server. Of note was that there was very little walking/table leeway and it was loud due to the crowd. So, if you are looking for an intimate place to grab a bite or drink, I wouldn't recommend Wednesday Trivia Nights! Overall, the food was of enormous portions! For appetizers, we ordered the Loaded Potato Skins and the Awesome Cheese Fries. These appetizers split among 4 people were so plentiful, we needed to take some home afterwards. The potato skins were a bit raw for my liking, but we did enjoy the toppings. I felt like the cheesy fries were the winner of the two. The fries had a great ratio of toppings-to-fries and the fries were not too soggy/fried. For entrée, I ordered the Cajun Chicken Alfredo pasta and while I felt it was a tad bit too greasy, it had a great hearty flavor. The chicken wasn't overcooked either. There was SO much chicken and pasta, I actually took half home. Lastly, I felt the red sangria was a bit too watered down, and more of a juice than a true drink, which was a little disappointing. Unrelated to the food, the trivia was doable, non-judgmental, and a blast. For me, it really added to my dining experience. I would highly recommend New Deck Tavern for Trivia Wednesdays and for anyone craving hearty bar food, especially if you want seconds to take home! We came here after exploring University City. This place was recommended by some of the locals. We were able to get a table outside. Space was very tight so you were close to the nearby tables. The staff came out sporadically. We were waiting a while for them to take our order and return with drinks. It might have been a busy day but lunch took longer than we thought it would. Of course in Philly we decided to order the cheesesteak. I ordered the Chicken Cheesesteak with fried onions and swiss cheese. It was decent but not the best I have had in Philly. The sandwich was very dry and hard to eat. I was hoping for a lot more flavor. We had to order additional sauces to at least eat the sandwich. Overall I think the food was mediocre here. Stopped by New Deck for drinks and food after a movie nearby. Took a seat at the bar with my girlfriend. We order a couple of cocktails. After we got the cocktails we still weren't given a food menu, so we eventually asked for one. For food we ordered the cheesesteak eggrolls and potato skins. The cheesesteak eggrolls were not evenly cooked, making parts of it crispy and parts not crispy. It was good, but not every bite was the same. The potato skins looked better than they tasted. The bacon was not crispy and was mostly underneath all the cheese. You couldn't really taste it. Overall it just lacked the flavor you would expect. New Deck was OK, but not good enough to become our go-to after movie spot in University City. read more

Fries were undercooked and soggy. I bit into one and you can still taste raw potatoes. Bar tender claimed that's how they serve them and if I want a crisper fry, the shoe string is the one I want. We went here for dinner last night before our drive back home to NY. First off all, the decor and atmosphere of the place is very welcoming, homey and pleasant. It's gorgeous inside with all the brick and it just has a very authentic Irish tavern feel (which is what it is). The food was excellent. The pretzels and cheesesteak egg rolls were delicious. The French onion soup was perfect. The Philly cheesesteaks were good, not the best I've ever had but I enjoyed them regardless. The service was very friendly. Our waitress was very accommodating and there was a gentleman behind the bar who also helped out and he was extremely pleasant. We had two small children with us who fully enjoyed their burgers & fries. They had yummy desserts as well (which got eaten too fast for a picture). So crispy but moist and tender too. The fries are skinny with no batter; I personally don't like batter on fries so I was very happy about that. Look, you know what you're going to get with New Deck. No one is coming here for a culinary tour de force. We're coming here to have some drinks in a loud, friendly environment, and let's be honest, the convenient location helps a ton as well. The best part about New Deck is the vibe--it's a college bar and thus boisterous, social, and on the cheaper side (although definitely not a dive bar). Service can be hit or miss, especially if it's busy, but again, you aren't really coming here for top notch service or dining. It's always a fun time here--definitely a place for groups. Trivia on Tuesdays is fun (8-10PM, so a bit on the late side for me, but it's a good time). The karaoke nights in Thursdays are also great (NOT high budget at all, but great to scream sing songs with your friends in a chill environment). With food, you must keep it simple. The fries and the nachos are both huge in portion, perfect to munch on as you catch up with friends. You must skip the pizza. It is an affront to all pizzas (see my posted picture if you don't agree). The cocktails are all fairly standard, I like the wide arrays of citywide modifications for economy's sake. My go to is the shot of tequila and a white claw for nine bucks, but mileage can definitely vary on that. I like that the crowd isn't super young--even on weekend nights, there are plenty of the 30s 40s crowd until 10 or so, although the majority of people are college age or graduate students. read more

I've shared many drinks with my coworkers here that we've gotten closer. We ordered 2 of their giant Moscow mule for each table at a happy hour and had a competition of which table can finish first! Their food is okay. You have to know what to order. I always get their awesome cheese fries. It's delicious and everyone can indulge in them. I also grab a pizza too. Their pizza isn't the best but it's good to order when there's many people there. I wish more items were on happy hour deals. The only food for happy hour is their chicken tendies and quesadillas. Great spot to visit if you are in the area of Penn, Drexel, CHOP or HUP. My dad had a recent surgery at HUP and we were surprised how little there was for food in the area. This is about a 10 minute walk and gives all the vibes of a good Irish / English pub from years ago. The staff and bartenders are friendly and the place always appears busy. On our first visit we shared the Brussel sprout special and Buffalo shrimp (forgot to picture as I was preoccupied). On our second visit we shared the quesadilla and chicken fingers. The Brussels were AMAZING! They were cooked with bacon, scallions, shallots and hot honey. They were perfect mix of sweet, salty, and spicy! The Buffalo shrimp were so so.
