In NYS it's illegal to charge more than $2 to notarize a document unless it's a remote notary (which is not what this was). I mentioned to her that I was also a notary & knew the laws & regulations, so instead of doing the right thing & accepting my $2 payment, she ripped up the document, so now I have to go back home and reprint the document in hopes of finding someone today to sign it. This nonsense that she replies with on her Google & Yelp reviews about this being a service or convenience fee -- you can't charge an additional fee on a notary service! "A notary public may charge a fee of $2.00 for administering an oath or affirmation or for taking an acknowledgment or proof of execution. UNLESS OTHERWISE AUTHORIZED BY LAW, A NOTARIAL FEE MAY NOT EXCEED THIS AMOUNT." Every lawyer I've spoken to has conquered that is 100% illegal to charge additional fees. I get it, running a business is expensive and it can take years to actually turn a profit. But that's just part of owning a business. I have reported this person to the NYS department of licensing services and the Secretary of State. I also spoke to the library director who said she had no idea and will tell her staff to stop recommending this business.
