The interior doesn't quite live up to the promise of the outside. Quaint and pokey, lots of ales to chose from, best for a quick one...once you've decided. I nipped in with a large group after hearing how great it was but due to its small size and lack of tables we were stood in the walkway between the seats, the stairs and the toilets. I'm sure we were creating a fire safety hazard. A large pool table sits against a wall acting as a giant waste of good table space. I know that the signs tell me they have the biggest range of bottled beers but I couldn't get to the bar to tell you, passing strange descriptive requests to friends standing at the bar to place the orders instead. This led to some awful tasting beers acquired as they overruled the advice of the barman by advocating for the interesting names instead. Upon walking in it honestly felt like the pub scene from American Werewolf in London, only go if you or a friend is an ale/beer fanatic.

With a speakeasy, secret doorway off New Street, this bar has an intimate feel. Space is limited, but if you can grab a table - it's worth a battle. This place converted me to Cider (I previously wasn't a believer) and has introduced me to wonderful beers from all over the world. The beers are kept to perfection by people who know their beers, it's the reason they have such a devoted and varied fan base. The bar is underground, so is pretty cool in the summer and nice and cosy during the winter - a perfect escape from the Christmas markets! With the large amount of oak, pictures and shiny brass beer taps, it feels like a time vortex hidden away in a vastly modern Birmingham. It doesn't do food, but you can take your own in. I believe they provide plates and cutlery on request, so you can grab something tasty for takeaway and enjoy at your own pace with a nice pint of craft beer or Cider. It's right by the station and off the main shopping arcade. If you only have time for one beer in Birmingham, make it worth it. Pay this place a visit....

It's a nice, friendly place with knowledgeable staff and a huge selection of beers, many real ales among them (tap or bottled). This is the official tap for Derby Brewery, so of course you will be able to sample any of their brews which, on balance are rather nice. They are not brewed on the premises though. Speaking of sampling beers: They do offer a convenient "tasting board" which consists of five smaller glasses, which add up to about 2 full pints (You can pick the beers you want yourself from their in-house brews) and a small bowl of cheese to cleanse your palate in between trying the beers. It's a recommended and nicely inexpensive method. See my photo. Again, this is a fairly modern pub that also offers decent food. It is popular with the young and older punters alike, although it may most appeal to hipster folk. Atmosphere is bright rather than rustic. Prices are normal for Derby, and vary between beers of different strength (due to the British beer tax), which might be an unfamiliar concept to visitors from abroad. Recommended as part of a Derby pub crawl.

They have an after work drinkers club for locals that seemed like a tremendous idea that more pubs should follow. The best of my beers was the Quint Essential. Stronger than I like in the afternoon, at all of 5.8pc, but a delicious beer worth the additional inebriation.

I spent some time with the waiter, and decided on a refreshing tangy, whisky cocktail which had a great punch to it. The bar mainly consists of whisky and a selection of rums. We were seated upstairs, which was a lovely open, restaurant with a twist of wooden and modern interior. We opted for the 'Seasonal £10 Menu' which was great food for the price. The menu consisted of 2 started each and a Main. We chose a selection of small starters, including salmon pate, salami and pickles and a light prawn cocktail. These starts were small portions but definitely tickled the taste buds. Great light refreshing starters. For the main course I went with a mushroom Risotto and Sea bream. The fish was very fresh with a light batter, risotto was very light, cooked to perfection with a sharpness of lemon which I throughly enjoyed. I only wish the dishes were a little bit larger! Great small dishes, very flavoursome and I would definitely go again. A grande step up from any pub grub in Birmingham.

We arrived at 5 and found a cosy corner in the bar. We later found out the singer would practically be on top of us but it was an intimate gig so that was fine by us. We ordered a baker elk fizz with was amaretto, prosecco and sour cherry liqueur. It was very delicious, sweet from the amaretto and cherry and did taste like a bakewell. I did need to stir the ingredients round but I liked the way the cocktail was presented in layers. There appeared to be a good choice and beers and ales too. The food samples started to be circulated just as we were leaving - they were canapés sized and there was a duck taster on a charcoal cracker which was interestingly flavoured with lemon and black pepper. The one I preferred was Guinea fowl in a terrine/pate - it whetted my appetite to see what else is on the new spring menu. We ll definitely return for some after work cocktails! And I see the PP guys are opening a pub in the JQ - cannot wait for that!!

This pub is located in Deritend/Digbeth and has the look and feel perfect for Brum's Irish Quarter. It has a real sense of place and history, as should any pub with its own theme song (seriously, check it out on youtube). The landlord John has built a reputation as a friendly face of the pub and representative of the neighbourhood. In a sea of bars and gastropubs serving £12 'craft' cocktails, the Spotted Dog serves as a landmark of sanity. The pub has a charmingly worn interior that is ridiculously clean for a boozer in Digbeth. Table tops adorned with candles sit inside, while a side door through the lounge exits onto what is probably the best covered garden in the whole of Brum. The drinks menu is simple yet satisfying. You'll find some of the usual suspects like Guiness on draft in addition to several rotating real ales. Liquor covers a breadth of options, with regular specials. On jazz night (Tuesday), Bushmills Irish Whiskey can be had for a pound and certain ales for £2.50. Even on a normal night, The Spotted Dog is one of the best values in Birmingham. The pub opens at 5PM most nights (sometimes later in the winter). Crisps are offered as the only snack, so you'll want to plan for food accordingly. The customer service is above expectations. A friend and I stopped in one evening right as the pub opened to sip some whiskey. As the first and only customers for over an hour, John shared with us some special Polish vodka a personal friend had brought to him. One of his bartenders asked what music to put on over the sound system and his reply was 'anything you want, as long as it's Bo Diddley'. These types of charmingly quaint memories are what makes The Spotted Dog so special for me. If you are in search of a proper Irish pub experience, look no further than The Spotted Dog.

It's pretty hard to miss, with it's name festooned on the exterior and with it's location being a gateway to the area. It's large looking from the outside, but you might be mistaken for thinking it was a bit of an "old man pub" venue... Oooooh... how wrong you would be. When you first enter the pub, you end up in a traditional pub area (with little stools, wooden tables and lots of people nursing pints of ale). The ale selection is plentiful and the staff are more than happy to give you a recommendation and a taster (if you aren't sure). So far, traditional pub, right? Well... let us continue. The pub bar opens into a hallway with several different directional choices. We WERE headed for the indoor cocktail bar, but this had been reserved for a Christmas gathering (so unfortunately, I cannot give you any idea of what this is like). If you head straight down the corridor, that's where the magic happens... So, the garden immediately hit me as a) Massive and B) Rammed. On our left was a cigar vendor and a smaller (heated and covered) seated area with comfy armchairs and lots of people enjoying a cigar. Just to the left is the "Wine bar", a wooden shack with everything from a very fine red, Champagne to mulled wine offerings. Further on from that is the huge decking area. Lots of warm heaters, tables, chairs and a "Beer festival" feeling, even though there were hundreds of people out there (no joke), there were still seats to be had. Attached to the decking area was a hot dog bar (I know, A HOT DOG BAR!) and a TIki cocktail bar. This HAD to be our destination. We opted to go for Zombies (£7 each - about average for a cocktail bar in Birmingham) and were suitably impressed when the server had finished pouring, tore open a packet of Angel Delight (with gusto), sprinkled over the cocktails and set them alight to a mighty "POOF"! With drinks firmly in hand, we went to find somewhere reasonably quiet we could have a chat and a contemplate on the venue's we had been that evening. This was when we found my favorite spot in the whole pub. The sanded, covered beach area. Who would have thought there would be a beach in Moseley? With Bamboo walls, lit up tiki masks adorning the interior and plenty of chairs and tables, it nailed it's place as my favorite pub of the night. This is the kind of venue you will go for 1 and end up having at least 3.
