However, the staff very kindly changed my drink to a glass of Merlot instead which was far more palatable. Good atmosphere and friendly staff. Not bad at all. But the attraction here is that it sells beer from all around the world. German, Belgian, Japanese, American... everything you can think of! They sell Weihenstephaner Weissbier which is one of the tastiest drinks on the face of the Earth. I can't recommend German Weissbiers enough. The prices aren't that cheap but they are perfectly reasonable, considering the drinks of offer. They are more than worth the money, that's for sure! This place is head and shoulders above any normal 'pub'. Bier also offers pies, nachos and hotdogs if you're feeling a little peckish. There are lots of TVs to show sport on. Sometimes I'll steer clear of the place when it's like this, I'll admit. This is because I'm not really into sport and, as you can probably imagine, it gets extremely packed at these times. If you're into your football though, then this place would definitely have yet more to offer you. Even though that sounds like a negative point from me, the good part of Bier more than make up for it. It's such a great place to relax and try fantastic beers from all around the world. This is an essential place to go.

It's a nice, friendly place with knowledgeable staff and a huge selection of beers, many real ales among them (tap or bottled). This is the official tap for Derby Brewery, so of course you will be able to sample any of their brews which, on balance are rather nice. They are not brewed on the premises though. Speaking of sampling beers: They do offer a convenient "tasting board" which consists of five smaller glasses, which add up to about 2 full pints (You can pick the beers you want yourself from their in-house brews) and a small bowl of cheese to cleanse your palate in between trying the beers. It's a recommended and nicely inexpensive method. See my photo. Again, this is a fairly modern pub that also offers decent food. It is popular with the young and older punters alike, although it may most appeal to hipster folk. Atmosphere is bright rather than rustic. Prices are normal for Derby, and vary between beers of different strength (due to the British beer tax), which might be an unfamiliar concept to visitors from abroad. Recommended as part of a Derby pub crawl.

They have an after work drinkers club for locals that seemed like a tremendous idea that more pubs should follow. The best of my beers was the Quint Essential. Stronger than I like in the afternoon, at all of 5.8pc, but a delicious beer worth the additional inebriation.

As others have mentioned, the food here is not your standard pub type food, but what they do server here is top notch and always tasting great! They are accommodating and will adjust the plates to meet your requests. The only down side is the serving size is a bit small, but going with a few extra starters solves that problem. The beer line up here is outstanding... page after page of beers are listed here and my guess is it would take some time to come here and go through all the beers they offer here. Some of which have very high alcohol content to boot. This certainly is not your rowdy pub, nor is it a stiff suite place either... its relaxing and always offering something different. Can't wait until my next visit!

Walking along division street and being turned away for being too late, we jumped in out of the rain to The Old House. Having been very impressed with The York we were looking forward to trying the same owners offering on Division St. The Cajun Chicken Pie was delightfully cooked, with pastry breaking apart with the sword of my fork. The chips and peas struck chords of Nan's cooking on a warm, summer eve. The burger topped with bacon and cheese oozed with moisture and some fresh salsa complimented the meat with its sharp edge. I will always go drinking in The Old House. The atmosphere, plethora of drink choice and well thought out furnishing makes for a brilliant watering hole. I'll eat there too now.

Oh salut! First time…read moreI walked past this a few weeks ago and saw the enomatic through the window I let out a an actual GASP of excitement. Was pretty excited on the night too, so excited I left my card in the wine machine which made me look like a total amateur. It's much more spacious inside than I had realised, and there are also seats and heaters outside with a great view of the nearby row of traditional pubs with the town hall in the background. I enjoyed trying the various wines (the smallest amount is often £2-3 so you can try a good four wines on a £10 card pre-payment) and could even tell that some of them tasted different, so am basically going to be earning my MW in no time. They also do a few little snacks - my fave baba ghanoush and some rather tasty crisps, although the brown olives tasted too sour for me. Tap water came chilled in a delightful glass bottle. Btw I am not sure there are actually other drinks options here, maybe check that before you go. The staff were efficient and welcoming and I am sure I will be back here. A great companion to hanging ditch and Bakerie in terms of our city's wine bar scene.

Although I now work for an independent wine merchant in Didsbury and am considered a bit of a fussy geek by my friends, I have longed for a good wine bar in Manchester pretty much since I arrived in town over 6 years ago, well before wine was a big thing for me. A few places have attempted it, half-heartedly for some, but none had so far succeeded. Then came Salut wines, first baby business of a lovely couple who like me love good wine and thought it deserved proper representation in the City Centre. An ambitious project that was, not without hurdles. But tenacity paid off and behold, a superb, clean, warm and welcoming wine bar where odd ins once was. Enomatic machines a-go-go, 32 wines are available by the glass at any point in (opening) time. That's 16 whites and rosés and 16 reds. Thanks to these machines you can enjoy a vast variety of wines, all of which are way above your house plonk from most pubs/bars/restaurant. And that's not all. 3 measures are available: 50ml, 125ml and 175 ml. The first one is my favourite. I can play to my heart's content and try a lot of wine before it's time to call it a day. Most wines are between £1.20 and £5 for a glass but you can also try some of the fancier stuff that would NEVER be available by the glass otherwise. Risk-free. Whilst they do not cater, a range of nibbles and tapas plates are available and it's perfectly suitable for a light lunch or diner. Cheese, cured meats and Mediterranean veggie plates, all made with very good ingredients. Music is top notch, not your average lounge "elevator" type nor your bass-boosted frenzy. Blues, jazz, pop, electro... To sum-up, great atmosphere, best wine selection in town, excellent service. The bottle prices to take away are on the steep side of I'm honest but I'll put that down as the location.

The interior doesn't quite live up to the promise of the outside. Quaint and pokey, lots of ales to chose from, best for a quick one...once you've decided. I nipped in with a large group after hearing how great it was but due to its small size and lack of tables we were stood in the walkway between the seats, the stairs and the toilets. I'm sure we were creating a fire safety hazard. A large pool table sits against a wall acting as a giant waste of good table space. I know that the signs tell me they have the biggest range of bottled beers but I couldn't get to the bar to tell you, passing strange descriptive requests to friends standing at the bar to place the orders instead. This led to some awful tasting beers acquired as they overruled the advice of the barman by advocating for the interesting names instead. With a speakeasy, secret doorway off New Street, this bar has an intimate feel. Space is limited, but if you can grab a table - it's worth a battle. This place converted me to Cider (I previously wasn't a believer) and has introduced me to wonderful beers from all over the world. The beers are kept to perfection by people who know their beers, it's the reason they have such a devoted and varied fan base. The bar is underground, so is pretty cool in the summer and nice and cosy during the winter - a perfect escape from the Christmas markets! With the large amount of oak, pictures and shiny brass beer taps, it feels like a time vortex hidden away in a vastly modern Birmingham. It doesn't do food, but you can take your own in. I believe they provide plates and cutlery on request, so you can grab something tasty for takeaway and enjoy at your own pace with a nice pint of craft beer or Cider. It's right by the station and off the main shopping arcade. If you only have time for one beer in Birmingham, make it worth it. Pay this place a visit....

Quite a lot has been changed inside (all the kinky bovine paraphernalia has been removed, obviously) and there are now smart leather booths, marble-topped tables and Belgian beer motifs dotted about the two floors of drinking space. With 10 taps and dozens of bottled beers (mainly Belgian, but with some other countries represented) they have a fairly good selection for the uninitiated Belgian drinker (I include myself here). It's table service, with every beer being served with its appropriate glass. It made for a pleasant drinking environment - you can have an audible conversation in here with light jazz background music turned down low. You're likely to get an equally decent choice of Belgian beers at Bar Fringe or Café Beermoth - or venturing further out of the city to Altrincham's Belgian Bar or Mort Subite. That being said, I liked it in here, they're still very new, and with them serving charcuterie boards, cheese fondue and dessert platters - it's one to return to.
