After living…read morein the west Texas region for two years, it was a delight to finally find a worthy climbing gym. Amarillo rock climbing has a great vibe. The staff are laid back, friendly and not overly restrictive. When we showed up, the front desk noticed that our gear was well used so he spared us the twelve hour safety lecture one has to endure other places (I'm all for safety, especially climbing, but it was nice not to be treated like I've never put on a harness before). While we were climbing, a young couple and their two sons came in. I couldn't help but notice how accommodating the staff took care of this family. From setting up the boys' harnesses to getting them on the wall, the staff proved they can handle experienced and brand new climbers a like. The climbing gym itself is like most others, located in an industrial part of town. Don't let the bleak outside deter you, however. They have plenty of climb-able surface (both top-rope and bouldering), a workout area and a loft, which houses hang boards and the like. The routes were a little reachy at times but had some creative moves. My favorite of the night was a route that made you pull a roof using dangling pvc pipes. While the routes were good, the wall itself is only about 25ft tall. As a result, training here for that next multi-pitch trip would be difficult. But hey, if you want to train for a Waco bouldering trip, amarillo rock climbing will hook you up. They have a well organized bouldering area to include surfaces at every incline imaginable. They even have a cave. In all, I'd recommend checking this place out. Whether you are looking for a birthday party venue, refreshing date activity or simply want to get in shape, amarillo rock climbing won't disappoint.

They have moved and the climbing portion of this is tiny - one climbing wall, one bouldering wall. I'm not the best climber but I enjoy it and have my own gear. Walking in there as both not a child or professional climber with my own stuff, it was incredibly awkward. The staff guy was pretty uncomfortable too. He gave us the "tour" and didn't mention any restrictions on belaying and saw the ATC in my hand but when we went to top rope he came over and scolded us about not having asked him and getting approved as if I was supposed to know. Then he mentioned that "plenty of their climbers have equipment too, so..." ...ok? After that little interaction, the noisiness, the complete lack of other climbers except a bunch of children coming over for a single climb - it just wasn't fun.

If you have an idea you or found one on Pinterest, they can help places the hands or feet. There is a way to fix mess-ups just incase! At check out, you can see the shelves of the finish projects of other goers. They have a locality punch card too! At the counter there are pamphlets for birthday parties or girls night type of events. For the younger kids, they have a story time & a craft on certain days of the month. You can tell she cares, and that made a great first impression. The zoo itself is small and has a certain charm, especially with how close you can get to the animals. But as we walked through, it became hard to ignore some concerns. Several enclosures appeared to need immediate attention, and a number of animals seemed distressed--most noticeably the bears, who paced back and forth repeatedly. It left us with a heavy feeling. While the zoo has potential and some genuinely caring staff, it also feels like the animals deserve more space, better conditions, and a higher level of care. Hoping improvements are made, because these animals deserve environments where they can truly thrive.
