I would say it has three parts; the building housing a detailed model railroad, an outdoor garden railroad, and the historic train engine and cars outdoors - including a Dept of Energy nuclear weapons transport train previously used for the nearby Pantex plant. The indoor train has representative modeling of the cities and rail lines east-west across the TX panhandle. The two level circuit route fills up much of the inside of the building. At this writing, it's pretty bare bones, the track is laid out, but lots of bare plywood and spaces for filling in the cities, buildings and features. Sky and clouds backdrops are looking good. Got a guided tour of the guard cars and engine of the "white train" used for nuclear weapons transport. Very interesting to see the security measures surrounding warhead transport. The garden railroad in front of the building is also still under construction. Currently has the brick foundation and dirt landscaping, and track is laid, but is not fully operational at this time. The staff on site were friendly and knowledgeable. Admission is free. Website amarillorailmuseum.com is spotty, but lists hours as: Our regular meeting nights are Thursday, from 7:00 p.m. until about 10:00. We are also open the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. You are welcome to visit us anytime, but if not at the times mentioned above, please call ahead. (806) 335-3333 Museum is located north of Amarillo airport, on Amarillo Blvd (Bus.40/Hwy 60) between Lakeside Dr. and Masterson Rd.

I have to say, I was most pleasantly surprised by this park. I did not have high expectations, as…read moreit sits alongside Lake Meredith in a rather isolated region far away from other park sites. When we arrived on a cool, sunny Saturday in late spring, we found it totally empty and ours "for the taking". The drive from the main road to the interior of the park quickly becomes scenic over the rolling hills and outcrops of dolomite and flint. West Texas standard flora abounds on these short plateaus and rocky hillsides. Think agaves, cacti, yellow wildflowers, and wiry, weather-worn trees. You can drive on in two different directions from the visitor center and snag up-close-and-personal views of the limestone boulders strewn about the park. One particular road offers several further explorations via dirt roads. We even came upon a stand-alone hoodoo in the midst of a valley surrounded by sentinel hills. Back at the visitor center, you will of course find a typical large assortment of goodies. Stickers, patches, books, stuffed animals, t-shirts, magnets, and many more trinkets. Don't forget to get your parks passport stamped! The staff, though in short supply these days, was very helpful. There are ranger-led tours usually at 10:00 and 13:00 everyday if staff is available and if the weather is not too hot. (Y'all it gets hot here in the summer - it is the desert after all!) Last but certainly not least, there is a walk through mini-exhibit explaining the geological and historical significance of the area's flint deposits. Not to be missed are two videos - one on flintknapping and one on the history and relevance of the area and its people. Best of all? This park is totally free to visit, so you owe it to yourself to get out here.

We really enjoyed the hike and getting to see the beautiful flint that nature created out there. We loved Ranger Elaine and her inspirational life story and her passion for her job and the quarries.
