I had the best color/cut of my life here with Haley and Kristen ! I originally came here a month ago to cut my really long, really boring hair without any idea of what I actually wanted save for short kind-of-micro bangs. Kristen helped me figure out something that looked super cute (a total Anna Karina inspired babe !!! style) and talked me out of choosing a pixie (thank you! I was being DRAMATIC). Also sometimes other salons don't "get it" and try to give what they would call an ~edgy haircut but is just very out-of-touch and lame, but Kristen TOTALLY knew exactly what I wanted. I was dying to go grey but kind of put it off for fear of damage/that I would look too pink/that it was too big of a change, but bit the bullet and went for it yesterday. I explained to Haley all of my fears/wants/desires/etc. and she was SO excited to do it. It took ALL DAY and even though she had other clients come in, Haley was attentive to my situation as well (and funny and sweet !) I think what really got me was when my hair was done, cut and dried, but there was still a spot that looked slightly yellow, Haley could have let me go. Instead, she asked if I minded fixing that part, and we kept fixing until it was perfect. She cared so much about my hair and it shows. The color is AMAZING ! It suits me well without making me look pink. My hair is still in GREAT condition ! My scalp isn't fried (I had been blonde as a teenager and sometimes bleaching would burn my head) ! I've only had amazing experiences at Little Axe hair salon. My first time visiting, I got partial highlights by their colorist Haley who brought out my carmel color and brightened my bits of blonde already in my hair. Would highly recommend Haley to anyone attempting a new color, those with virgin hair or friends looking for a drastic change. Haley is honest, helpful and wants the best for your hair, a total professional (and an awesome gal too!) Kristen, my stylist, was a total sweetheart, very intuitive and understanding of my cut needs. I barely had to explain what I wanted and she totally got it right away. I just showed her a picture of my fav model, Freja Beja and she knew. Also Kristen threw up my hair in the most wonderful summer braid before I left the chair. I kept it in for two days, got so many compliments :) Best way to keep cool in the heat. What I really love about Little Axe is how you can spend the whole day with the girls and they make you feel right at home. Where do I begin? Obsessed, in love and ETERNALLY grateful for this salon. This has to be by far the best place I have been to in a very long time. First I went to "wet my toes" with a haircut by Coby-- It was a drastic cut so I did a lot of research prior to booking my appointment especially since i cut my hair from my waist to shoulder length I wanted to make sure that I was going to the right place. I did receive a personal recommendation so that did give me the extra push to go and I'm so happy I did. I'm in love with my new hair and Coby did exactly what I like and also showed me some great styling tips that I CAN actually do by myself-- Trust me I'm not hair style friendly, It's either straight or super curly no in between but now I actually got the hang of it. After a month I figured I was sick and tired of going to the City to get my hair colored and figured let me jump all in to this salon and try the colorist. (This was a big step: Long story short I found a celebrity and loved her blond hair and that was my hair goal color-- I went so far as going to her colorist and every time (about 5 times I went) I cam back a little not happy because it wasn't-- this wasn't the color, so Trying Christina was actually a little bit of hope for me. Christina is AMAZING!! She understood exactly what I wanted-- I showed her the picture and I got exactly that! I was shocked and pleased at the same time. The salon is very cozy-- I feel at home and the staff is super friendly-- They give you insight to the styles and products they use. I have also switched all my products for my hair to Oribe since I loved the way my hair has felt since Coby and Christina visit. Yay! Coby Alcantar is back! She was my stylist for 3 years at Whittemore House Salon. Her haircuts are effortless and low maintenance yet stylish. My hair always grows out nicely! She's very passionate about her work and education and has trained many of the best of there. I was really sad when she relocated to the Bay Area. But she's BACK and now the owner of her own salon. Cute, intimate space in Willy B. It's Brooklyn but just under 10 mins from Union Sq. It literally took me 8 mins to get to the salon from the East Village area- right off the L train! The cut is a bit pricey but well worth it from one of the best out there! Note: I went on a hot steamy 95+ degree day. After cutting and styling my long hair, we decided it was too hot out there to leave it down. She braided my hair in the cutest little 'do -- it is SO cute. I love it! It looks so complex and intricate in the back but effortless and cool at the same time - amazing!!!! read more

I realized today that I hadn't yet written a review for Little Axe Salon! I first tried it out last year through a Gilt City deal for haircut and highlights. I absolutely loved the results, and have continued seeing Kristen for haircuts. I absolutely love how she cuts my hair, she is so incredibly talented. Kristen is also so friendly and down to earth, very easy to talk to while in the chair. The rest of the staff is great as well - friendly and helpful. I can't say enough wonderful things about Kristen's haircuts. I told her I didn't want any layers in my big, frizzy hair but still wanted weight taken out, and unlike every other person who's ever cut my hair, she said, "Okay," and "Layers aren't the answer to everything," which I've been waiting to hear throughout an entire life of hairdressers giving me choppy, suburban mom-looking cuts no matter what I ask for because they don't know how else to tame hair. What really makes this salon special beyond excellent, talented Kristen is the warmth of the entire staff. I came in during a rainstorm, dripping like a dog all over their nice floors and seats, and they didn't even blink; they immediately insisted I take a towel and warm robe, hand-dried my shirt with a hairdryer, and then put it in their machine dryer for good measure. So I'm obsessed with this place, but honestly, more importantly with Kristen. She has been cutting my hair for 2.5 years (since I moved to New York). It's always scary to transfer to another city and therefor new life-fixers such as hairstylists or waxers or the dentist. From the minute I sat in Kristen's chair I knew I was in the best most capable hands. She has been helping me grow my hair out for my wedding and has always recommended the right amount of cut vs. grow periods. I don't get it done short but I have seen that she is an actual WIZARD with shorter styles. I have literally never gotten a better blow dry and will only ONLY let Kristen blow dry my hair now if I am in New York. And not just if I am in New York, when I got married, I had to have Kristen come to do my blow dry then and it was 5 hours outside the city. That is how much I love her and trust her with my hair. Not to mention, she is so sweet. Finally, the salon itself is cute, unpretentious and very comfortable. I now have my girlfriends hooked on going there as well. Lara is a lifesaver, and a truly amazing colorist. I came in after having a terrible gloss done at another salon, and she was able to salvage my hair. When I came in, my color was totally uneven--super red on the top of my head and absolutely no color underneath. After two hors of Lara working her butt off, walked out of the salon with a hair color that I love. She went above and beyond and didn't finish until I was totally happy with my hair. I wish I could give Coby TEN stars. I love my new haircut so much! It's been a month already, and throughout this adjustment time has morphed into such a kick ass style. I brought reference photos and described the way I saw what I was showing her, and she really listened carefully. She also helped "correct" my request, because I had some photos of my own hair from a previous cut that I didn't like (those are just as helpful as the ones you do like, so if you have them...bring them...she appreciated that). Apparently I was asking for something similar to what I'd had in the past but didn't like. Anyway, I think it took about two weeks for my hair to adjust to the cut and ever since then every day has been awesome. Since I have wavy hair and she used the razor, I can actually just wash my hair once a week, but comb water through it everyday and it bounces back to the way I like it. Actually even gets better after not washing with this cut. Coby is super duper experienced and profesh in a way that I have not experienced in a stylist before. She's a total pro. But also I like that she showed me how to make my not-bangs more "editorial" which means fashion-y. I cannot recommend her enough. Go! I was referred to her by the famous Jayne Matthews of Edo Salon SF, and in fact, Coby actually taught Jayne back in the day (and Coby also led education initiatives at Bumble and Bumble). I have been going to Coby to cut my hair for 5 years. I will follow her wherever she goes as no one does what she can do. I tried and fell off the wagon several times, going for a cheaper cut elsewhere...or a more convenient location etc The results have left me disappointed each time.
