My chocolate toasted hot chocolate decaf drink was beyond delicious. The dogs were thrilled and the adorable items for sale so charming. Lovely friendly folks came through and it was such an utterly sweet and enjoyable experience. There's a wide selection of cheeses and brews as well, for those wanting an accompanying bite. We decided to browse around the market area before sitting somewhere. There were so many items! You name it, it was sold in the market. There were items that were handmade by local residents and items from corporations as well. There were some snacks that piqued my interest, as well as some crafts. When we were about to sit at the bar, we were greeted by I believe one of the owners, who very enthusiastically welcomed us and paid a lot attention to our dog. I was craving iced tea so I ordered that, along with a bottle of wine- since it was cheaper. Hubs went the usual route and ordered an IPA on tap. We sat and enjoyed our drinks while we gazed around. Since it is so close to WEC, they had horse races showing on the television. The bartender was attentive and kept my bottle of wine in the fridge and topped me off as necessary. It was not super busy in the afternoon but as it became later, more people came in. I believe a lot of traffic from the restaurant next door stroll in after dinner. Speaking of, there is not a kitchen but they have baked goods, cheeses in the fridge, and food trucks on occasion. They also have pairing dinners and all their events are updated on their Instagram page. If this place was not so far from home, we would be here every week.

The owner is super friendly and personable. He is actually here most of the time. There has been only once or twice I have visited when the owner was not here. When the store initially opened, there were a ton of promotions on the booze and the deals have continued. I try to actively pay attention to prices when visiting liquor stores and especially pay attention to the corporate places. The prices here have always been reasonable. The available selection is pretty reasonable as well. Beer, wine, liquor, and non-alcoholic choices are available here. You can also play lottery here and indulge in some scratchies, which is why we visit here primarily. We do okay but have not won a jackpot or anything significant like that yet here. You can actually purchase lottery with a debit card as well! That is really convenient since we are rarely near our bank. The store is closed only on Sundays (some kind of liquor store law in Ocala) and they are open really late. We have driven by after midnight and the lights were still on. I am not sure if they were closed to customers or maybe they are open late. There is really nothing in the immediate area, so it is smart for business. There are all sorts of goodies for every kind of budget here. You can also find alcohol ice cream and some cheap cigars here.

Kevin said that was a good location, but recommended I look at Sandy's Shack if I wanted better prices on brew. I went over the next day. To set the stage, Ocala is - surpriingly - a great craft beer city. In fact, there are other towns close by that also have a great selection in their taprooms. You can buy beer to go in many of the taprooms, but store wise, Ocala has two really good beer shops: Sandy's and Metro. This little gem of a shop sits in the Beall's shopping center behind the Outback on Silver Spring Blvd east of downtown. It is primarily a beer and wine shop and the shop owners, Sandy and Alex, were manning the fort when I went in. I started a conversation and Sandy showed me back to the beer section. There are 5 colors full of beer and the options are well curated. Many of the best breweries in Florida, with a decent selection of great brews from other states. I also ended up buying a bottle of wine, as they had a great selection of Italian wines: Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Nabbiollo, etc. And the knowledge the owners show for both wine and beer is fantastic. How does it compare to the Metro Craft Beer Headquarters? I think Metro may have a slightly larger selection, but fewer brews you can buy by the single. Plus, I found many of the beers to be a dollar or two more expensive per can at Metro (example: $8.99 for a 450 North Slushie Sour versus Sandy's $6.99). As such, it would be prudent, economics wise, to see if you can exhaust Sandy's Shack prior to Metro, unless you have a need for a particular beer you know is more likely to be at Metro. The shop also does some free tastings and the owners are more than happy to give you an education on wine and/or beer. Highly recommend.

We had a trip down to the Tampa area to see family and decided we would hit them up on the way home- it's about 20 minutes off I75 heading West on 40 and then you enter the twilight zone. We are cruising through farmland and John points at the navigation and says look at that huge community out here in the middle of nowhere. A diamond shaped pattern of roads and intersections appeared on the screen and that is where GPS was taking us- into this what-appeared-to-be neighborhood. Follow that nav- trust me. Aw the road changes from paved to gravel you will feel like you slipped into the twilight zone or a horror flick or simply that there is no way a distillery is out there. It is. The property was selected based on water supply- spring water. It was never intended to host customers, but Fish Hawk has a wonderful bar setup in the backyard. Yes- you are going to a farm/home/working distillery. Pro tip- call ahead for reservations and have no other plans for the day. You will be treated as old friends and the conversation will be fun, entertaining and real. The samples of Whiskey, Rum, Vodka, Brandy & Absinthe will keep the conversation flowing, as will the craft cocktails, expertly made. The Old Fashioned was divine! And I loved my color changing Lemon Drop! This will probably be the most interesting distillery find ever for me & that's saying A LOT. Matthew was waving us in from the road and was so entertaining, his son behind the bar made sure we had our samples and cocktails and a few toasts were made. Conversation waxed on and the light dimmed. How long have we been here??? Just before the sunset we did a quick tour of the facility- they had a lighting strike that forced a remodel and things were temporarily out of place. That didn't stop Matthew from educating us! My favorites: Conquistador 1513- John and I tried 2 different batches of this whiskey and the one I had was bottled this year and so smooth. It's 100% Oat mash bill using half smoked and half rolled Oats from farmers in Northern Florida and aged with barrels and chips ot create a smokey oatmeal finish. I bought this bottle and it will be one of my most prized bottles on my bar. Marion 106 Black- This is a much higher proof fruit based brandy- deep flavors that linger and fill your mouth, I fully expected to buy this and I probably will next time I visit! It's tangerine based and delightful. La Septima- a bold Black Rum. A friend of the owner popped in and chatted for a bit and said to make sure I try this rum, the he had a bottle on his bar because it is so good. I LOVE rum. Whiskey, bourbon and rum are my go-to choices. They had 4 different rums and I only sampled this one and I took this bottle home. I loved the warmth in this bottle. I even convinced another guest to try it when he had his mind made up to buy a bottle of whiskey only. He took home both! Any of my friends who enjoy tastings- I will certainly send here! Worth the day trip from Jacksonville for sure! There is so much more to say~ but this is already a lengthy review!

The old fashioned was just the right amount of sweet & fruit with the tang from the whiskey. The gin's botanicals were deliciously refreshing and made a truly superb gin and tonic. The owner is a likable guy who enjoys telling stories and interacting with the guests. His story about the origin of the term "shot" to describe a portion of liquor is very entertaining. There's only one caveat about this place, it could use some... tidying up! I get the whole rustic vibe, but the tour area is very crowded, mostly with buckets, random tools and... kinda junky. I really want to stress the good aspects of this distillery, namely the people. You get a great idea of the steps involved in making liquor presented in an interesting and entertaining tour.
