Nobody gave off that "please don't ask me another question" busy-day energy. This time we tried the sampler with four different ice cream flavors, which is perfect when your brain says, "Just pick one," but your stomach says, "Why limit ourselves?" And then came the funniest part of the visit. She told us one of the flavors was caramelized pineapple... and somehow I heard Spider-Man. LOL. I have absolutely no idea how my brain got from caramelized pineapple to Spider-Man, but once I said it, the whole family lost it. We were all cracking up. So now, whether they like it or not, that flavor will probably forever be known as "the Spider-Man ice cream" in our house. LOL. Of course, we also had to get the Sunny Mango again. That drink is AMAZING and has officially become one of our must-orders. My daughter went with the birthday cake ice cream in a waffle cone and absolutely loved it. Even the most persnickety of New England transplants would have to acknowledge that this is a really good quality place -- they could hold their own against most of the great bakeries (many now gone) in the Northeast. And they are comically, absurdly, ridiculously, ludicrously better than any other bakery in the Southeast. It's a German bakery, so the style of pastries is a bit more dainty and exquisite (gewählt, even) than those at a typical New England bakery (where danishes are generally massive, with a thin pastry border surrounding a vast caldera of fruit or cheese filling). But, that's just a stylistic thing. The pastries at Strossner's are elegant, very tasty, soft, not dry, and perfectly made. The apple and lemon fillings are as good as any I've had anywhere in the United States. The cheese filling, and chocolate cookies and cakes are excellent, too. Everything is also very fresh -- these are clearly pastries made without any sort of preservatives, so aging will quickly show. Basically, this is the best bakery I've been to since at least 1984 (when I was a very small and chunky kid, in Fall River, MA, home of bakeries). And, like the serious bakery they are, they also have breads. Some very well-made authentically German breads, too. When there was a line, it moved quickly, and service was excellent at the counter. Everyone was very friendly and well-informed about the products. There are also some brunch-type items (quiches) but I didn't try them. They looked pretty good, though. My only fear for Strossner's is that, due to the apparent lack of competition for hundreds of miles or more, there may one day be a loosening of standards. But, since they seem to still be owned and actively run by the original founding family, it's pretty darn good right now.

This is the type of place where they make their own syrups in house (which I prefer). If you're looking for pastries, you're in luck because they have those too! Mine was delicious and though I personally drink plain tea (sometimes with lemon) at home and not a coffee drinker, the latte was perfect on this foggy wet winter day. To be honest, it would have been perfect on any day. I was asked if I preferred a mug or the disposable cup, an option if it was small (I think though maybe large?) or medium size order. I had ordered a medium and there's something about having a handle, right? Plus less landfill item. Because I'm trying to reduce the amount of sugar intake from the holiday season (and had breakfast 90 minutes prior), I did not choose any of the baked goods, though tempting. I should have captured a photo to recall but there were muffins, cookies, etc CRAVE has WiFi available for its patrons and quite inviting to remain, not rushing anyone out. I saw people alone enjoying a drink and reading, others alone on their laptop, many with others enjoying each other's company and conversation. If you crave a place that will allow you to relax and/or have a pick-me-up drink, CRAVE certainly is a place to go. Because this is the anchor shop of a strip, there is ample parking along the parking lot on the side. They really seem to care about each other and customers, and they were all really courteous and quick. They also are attentive and kept the tables, counter, and bathroom really clean. I don't go to a lot of Starbucks so it's hard to compare, but the only thing I noticed was that it was loud inside. Not just the blenders, but the music was cranking too. So I wouldn't recommend it as a place to work or have a conversation with someone, but it's a nice place to be if you want good service and a clean place to sit for a bit.
