Lionel Hampton Park - also known as Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Park/Nature Preserve - is a large greenspace in SW Atlanta operated by the City of Atlanta. It is named after the jazz musician.
As of November 2015, the park is still fairly undeveloped, although there is a written (2006) plan to do so. There are no parking areas, no facilities, not much of anything except space and two paved paths: the Lionel Hampton Trail and the SW Connector Trail, both part of the Path Foundation network. There's no real 'entrance' yet.
That said, it is accessible. You can either park on the street at several locations and ride or walk the paved trails, or you can park at the end of Cativo Rd and walk in on an unpaved trail. I walked into the park from Willis Mill Rd, Rogers Ave, Westwood Ave and Cativo Rd.
At the north end of the Lionel Hampton Trail (Willis Mill Rd entrance), you'll find a fully functional children's playground as well as a bunch of exercise stations along the path (see photos). There are also benches all along the paved trails.
The unpaved trail off Cativo Rd (actually a construction road) takes you into a very nice wooded area along Utoy Creek.
I think the residents in the area can look forward to this greenspace being fully developed. In the meantime, the Path Trails are open for business. read more
