Though the preserve sits near a major road and is surrounded by urban development, it feels far removed. Birdsong replaces traffic noise and the dense foliage wraps around you like a soft barrier. The air feels cooler and calmer, and the sounds of the city fade into the background. It is not a long hike but it is enough to reset your senses and remind you that nature still thrives in unexpected places. If you are looking for a short walk that delivers peace without a long drive, Blue Heron is worth it. It feels more remote than it is and that illusion makes the experience even better. Morningside Nature Preserve has about 2 miles of trails, and the South Fork Peachtree Creek runs through its 33.1 acres. The Preserve used to be known as Wildwood Urban Forest. There's a parking lot on the smaller side off of Lenox Road, and you can also access the preserve from Wellbourne Drive; I spotted some cars parked on the street. Didn't look like any public restrooms were available. Some sandy beachy areas are located alongside the creek, and there's even a wooden suspension bridge. There's basically no trail signage with a plethora of spur trails branching off the main one. Luckily Morningside Nature Preserve isn't so large that getting lost would be an issue but there were several times that I thought I was wandering onto private property. And there were parts of the boardwalk that needed repair. In addition to humans, there were a bunch of doggos here also enjoying the urban outdoors. But you need to look where you step to prevent unpleasant poop encounters. Bad dog owners, bad!

It's under development and plans are to connect the trails here with ones to the west and east. As of this review, there are a few hundred yards of improved path, some wetland development and some dirt paths. Scattered through the park are maps detailing the current and future walking paths. The paths as drawn on the maps are a bit schematic, though, so don't be surprised if the path that was supposed to curve left actually curves right, etc. It's a very small park so there's no worries about losing where you are. The dirt path parallels a very trashy South Fork Peachtree Creek and goes further than the improved path, perhaps outside the park boundary. I couldn't be sure but I ended up near someone's fenced backyard. I like the signs labeling some of the plants. The small wetland area has several of those. One improved path takes you to the back of the Zonalite Building, right where the Floataway Cafe is located. There's actually a short old rail line behind the building that's been converted to a walking path. I'm not sure if it's on park property or that of the building. There are a herd of picnic tables at the far west end. Zonolite has a small separate parking lot on the east end with space for half a dozen cars or so. As it's still got a ways to go until fully improved, Zonalite Park is not much more than a pleasant 20 minutes of walking. But I applaud these projects - they do a lot to keep the city healthy.

The weather was perfect and the knowledgeable rangers led us on an educational flora and fauna hike. We learned about different plants and mosses growing on the mountain. We even saw a pair of ducks and their nest of eggs. It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.

The land is interesting, a mix of rocky and verdant terrain. Some dirt trails divert off into the woods. There are a few substantial parking areas. Some open meadows are near the bottom of the hill, while the rocks tend to be more prominent the higher you go. It's a free stop as well.

The park is actually a lovely 1863 homestead and 15 acres of lovely woods with some mighty centuries old trees standing tall and beautiful. The trails are kept by a devoted community of supporters, as well as the home and yard at the entrance. The forest provides plenty of shade where you can still manage a comfortable stroll even on hot days. It feels more like a nature hike than a park trail. I'm glad I found this park, it is my new favorite! The history of the homestead and property adds to the charm!

I wanna say this is one of the best running trails around Decatur from all the parks I've been to. Although you have to run past a gate that ultimately leads to two other parks, I feel safe because of the other runners and dog owners that come by here. I ran late so I wasn't in there for long maybe 45 minutes, but I'll come here again and try to get on the other trails. From what I saw a rock path across a stream, trails, and board walk make this a multifarious path. Bottom line: I recommend you come here whether your running, walking your dog or going out hiking casually.

I don't like giving parks less than 4 stars, because I like to endorse parks, and I like people to…read morego out and enjoy parks...I just don't know how much of a park Ira B Melton Park is. As mentioned in another review, there is no parking, so I just parked along park street, directly across from Ira B, and took a walk. What I found was a lot of orange construction barrier alongside either side of the trail, which really was about a half mile one way in trail, that dead ends at a nearby creek. I may have come to this park a bit to late, because I saw the following signs: "Temporary Trail access....use park at your own risk", "Trail closed ahead...no park access", "construction zone...no trespassing" so either there's about to be major work done to the park, or I dunno what. I did note several creek dry beds that may or may not be trails, although I didn't go down them. There were large cobblestones along the trail, which helped to keep mud off of your shoes with the surrounding soggy ground, and while there are benches, they're towards the entrance of the park only. If you live in the neighborhood and want a little more nature in your walk, absolutely check it out, but I wouldn't make a special trip to seek Ira B Melton Park out...not until it officially reopens anyway
