We went to this store to try to find some items we couldn't get at the other grocery store in town…read more We found some items but others they didn't carry at this Walmart. This store didn't carry some of the products that we find at other Walmart's. The Walmart Supercenter is set up like most other supercenters. It was clean with a deli & grocery on one end and pharmacy/home goods on the other. I'm not a big fan of Walmart (lowering quality of things for a cheap price) but in this small town, you go different places to find different things.. The deli was very clean, hot food like chicken bites (tasty) real hot and deli meat & cheese with salads look clean and neat. The produce is good quality with some variety but they won't stock bean sprouts (?) or the usual veggies & fruit-although they do not stock the more unusual shishito peppers. The basic veggies looked good but the fruits didn't have a large stock. We probably would go to the Walmart again if I needed some product while in the area that I couldn't find at the other grocery.

Not terribly helpful, but I got a pot listed on sale for six something, and at self checkout it showed 8 something. She came over, for some reason the checkout failed, and I mentioned the price discrepancy. She said, "Well it's not on sale. Nothing I can do about it!" Wow, thanks so much for the friendly helpful attitude. I realize these people get paid dirt for their work, while the Waltons cash in, but this was not the way to treat a customer. "Nothing I can do about it!" And even if you could, I'm not sure you would.

Life gets busy up at Fishlake and you get a hankering to barbeque a nice thick steak. Sadly…read moreWalmart and the local groceries in Richfield, full of supplies, have no butcher so you are limited to the thin prepackaged beef they have available. No more. The town of Salina is almost the exact same distance as Richfield from Fishlake and in Salina you find Barretts Foodtown grocery with a full service butcher shop. I walked in around 6 PM and they were just finished cleaning the machines. Oh well. A man in a white apron was standing in front of the case, turn smiled and asked if he could help me. I said I was looking for a thick cut ribeye steak. "Bone in or boneless" He asked. Then he proceeded to grab a beautiful ribeye roast and a ruler. " How thick"? Inch and a half. He hand cut and trimmed the steak beautifully. I then proceeded to buy some of his famous sasauge and a flat iron steak. All beautiful meat. Barretts has a great vegetable section, a bakery with handmade desserts plus everything you need in groceries. All served with smiles and a friendliness not found in a major chain grocer. My flat iron was so tender you would have thought it was fillet. The dessert was strawberry shortcake with fresh whipped cream, fresh strawberries and a custard filling between two fresh pieces of cake. Wonderful. Plenty of parking. Terrific service. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Austin's Chuckwagon Motel for a night while exploring Capitol Reef in one of the…read moreretro-Queen rooms above the store. This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.

Guests of the motel gets free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate from the general store which is open early til late, 10pm I believe. We ate at the deli for breakfast. I was looking forward to the quiche based on what I saw on the Yelp pictures but I guess the menu has changed. They only offer breakfast sandwiches now but it's made to order so we got to choose type of eggs and proteins. It did take a bit a time for them to make it so factor that in when planning your visit. The sandwiches were ~$12 each but were pretty filling so perfect for another day of hiking.
