Easily the best meal of my time in Germany. I had originally set my sights on the nearby…read moreSchnitzelbank, but scheduling didn't work out. In hindsight, I'm glad it didn't. Walking in felt like stepping back in time. I doubt much has changed about this place in decades, and that's entirely a compliment. We were seated near a window and the ambiance was everything you'd want, cozy, warm, and genuinely inviting. I loved the feel of it. Our server was very kind. Her English was limited, but she was gracious and patient as I attempted to speak German, and was generous enough to tell me I did well. It added to the charm of the whole experience. Now, the food. The potatoes that came with the schnitzel were the best German potatoes I've ever had. The schnitzel itself was delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. The cheese spaetzle was a highlight as well, rich and satisfying. Plan on sharing it. The one miss was the pizza my sister-in-law ordered, which was fine but felt out of place. Stick to the German classics and you won't be disappointed. Would love to return if I ever make it back to Heidelberg.

Our dinner was really good. We did have reservations. We even enjoyed some non-alcoholic beer. We had apple strudel for dessert, which was also really good. We were staying at the hotel, so just had to go upstairs after dinner. For the hotel - the only difficulty was the check in. We weren't sure where to go to check in. So we ended up asking the wait staff. We walked through the restaurant with our luggage to the the check in desk. Our room was comfortable and homey. The door required an old fashioned key to open. You can't beat the location being right by the old bridge.

The room we had overlooked a river. Front desk staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful (providing a map and some recommendations). The lobby lounge area was cozy and beautifully decorated for Christmas. Our room did have two twin beds that were actually separated from each other, sometimes hard to find in Europe. The room itself was not particularly spacious, especially the bathroom (which was about the size of a cruise ship bathroom). The bed was firm, but reasonably comfortable. The pillow was a large European style pillow, but needed a bit more firmness for neck support. The hotel does have an elevator, but it only goes up to the third floor. If your room is on the fourth floor, as ours was, you have to go up a final set of steps to your floor (but the front desk did ask us if we needed assistance with that). The hotel appeared to have an associated restaurant next to it, but we did not eat there to comment. The location and friendly staff definitely take the edges off the negatives. For those traveling by train, there is not close proximity to the station (so you'd need a taxi to the hotel). However, the hotels I stayed at in Germany that were close to the main train stations ended up being in much more shady neighborhoods--so lack of proximity may be one reason why the area felt so much safer for this hotel.

It had air conditioning which was nice on a warm day. Once your car was parked you can walk to everywhere. It's an old building updated nicely. The only downside is no parking but if you use the parking place they suggest then you do get a discount. Be prepared if you have a large vehicle trying to find a place. The parking spots are very small. I knew this in advance. The views, the people , the bed and the location makes it worth staying. I will be back.

The neighborhood is quiet and the beds are comfortable. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and clean. Visitors from the U.S. will want to know that there is no air-conditioning in the sleeping rooms, but the conference rooms do have it. As well, the wifi signal was inadequate from my first room in the 160 hallway. However, the staff cheerfully moved me to a room closer in proximity to the lobby where the wireless signal was flawless I can't say enough about the breakfasts. What an amazing spread, and in the European style that I've grown to like so much. There is plenty of variety, and I wish hotels in the States would adopt some of the Euro-style dishes and serve them here. Breakfast was a high-point, and I was up early for it each morning. The Villa Toscana is a very nice hotel, and you won't go wrong putting it on your short list of possible places to stay when visiting the Heidelberg area.

Schnitzelbank is the highest rated restaurant in Heidelberg, and with just cause…read more We lucked out coming here around 1430 HRS because we just missed the lunch rush and just beat the early dinner crowd. The weather was beautiful for sitting outside. I wish I had gotten our server's name because he was outstanding. Friendly, witty, and willing to help navigate the menu - he made our dining experience even better. We started with a couple of local wines that were amazing - a red and a rosé. Some bread and butter came to our table with our escargot starter and side salad. The bread and starter were delicious. Our snails were hot and garlicky with plenty of juice to sop up. The side salad was also very tasty and fresh. For our mains I went with the Schnitzelbank Platter and my lady went with the Pepper Schnitzel. My platter came with a local delicacy called saumagen, as well as roasted pork, sausage, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut. The saumagen was the highlight for me. Our server was also excited we got it. It is a local offering consisting of various meats and other items wrapped up in a stomach and served as a loaf-style meat. The pepper schnitzel was also outstanding - the sauce was indeed peppery, but it didn't smother the schnitzel, which was breaded nicely and not dry, as some schnitzels can be. And after all that food, still, an apple strudel. This was so worth it. I don't even like sweets in the USA, but in Europe, they are something else. This was something else. We had a lot of great meals on our trip, but this was probably the best. Not just for the food, but for the overall experience, it's easy to see why this is the shining star in Heidelberg.
