Started the process of re-learning the guitar (acoustic in my case) after many years away. Discovered Charlie, a local teacher, and decided to give him a try. Charlie was patient, friendly, knowledgable and methodical in his approach helping me to begin to master some of the foundational basics, while also providing insights into music theory. He is a multi-talented musician who plays more than just guitar and his teaching style and pace worked well for me as an adult. The one thing I would do differently is to take 1-hour lessons from the start versus 30 minute session. That was a poor decision on my part. While my initial time learning with Charlie was fairly short due to some other commitments of mine that disputed our ongoing schedule, I learned a reasonable amount during the time we worked together and could go back again when time permits. read more

My middle school aged child has been taking acoustic guitar lessons with Mr. Lin for 6 months. He is a wonderful teacher, patient, friendly, and kind, and my child is really enjoying learning guitar. The lessons are paced to work with my child's progress, sped up or slowed down appropriately, and are continuously building his guitar playing skills. Our daughter has been taking weekly guitar lessons from Charlie for a few years and we couldn't be happier. Originally she was only interested in learning strumming and rhythm guitar, but Charlie encouraged her to try for more and now she's enjoying finger-picking and lead guitar, too. He provides the necessary resources (printed or electronic music) to enable practicing at home in between lessons. What I find most beneficial is Charlie's ability to take a song that a student is interested in and provide instruction on it in a way commensurate with their current skill level. What I mean is the Internet can provide you with tab to play any song, but Charlie will present it in an appropriate way so the student doesn't get frustrated, e.g. "That's a difficult chord so let's simplify it for now by playing it this way. But let's also work on this other bar chord so you strengthen your fingers so you can play this other chord." He'll take any song the student is interested in and provide them an appropriate version to play, which goes a long way in maintaining interest in learning. Bottom line is the Internet is not a suitable replacement for a student who really wants to learn how to play an instrument. If you or your kids are interested in guitar there's no better guitar teacher in Camarillo, in my opinion. read more

I took lessons from Charlie for ~1.5 years. He is super patient and extremely knowledgable. We started from pop songs and worked all the way up to Blues. Charlie provides resources such as printouts and progress tracking. Charlie is also extremely flexible with schedules. He can adapt songs per your diffculty level and is always encouraging. He gives you enough room to learn and practice, yet at the same time pushing you to move to the next level. Charlie is the best guitar teacher I've ever had and I'm thankful for his time. read more

I am very much a beginner guitar player. Charlie is great. He instructs at whatever pace is comfortable for me. Playing the guitar is much more difficult than it looks. Charlie is great at showing me how to improve. Though I have a long way to go, I feel like I have made significant progress. Charlie is a great teacher! He is patient and willing to work with you to choose songs that you enjoy playing. He is also very good at teaching guitar fundamentals which is an importer base-level knowledge to have when learning a new instrument. Charlie is effective and patient. I tell him what I want to do and he teaches me how to do it. It takes me a while to get it (but that's on me) and Charlie never gets frustrated and remains supportive. Here's an example of what Charlie does: I'll find something I want to learn. I'll send him a link. Next lesson, he'll have it all ready and something that takes the concept further. He'll take me over the technique and explain the theory or strategy behind the technique. Taking weekly lessons has definitely improved not only my playing (obviously) but my well-being. Once I get the hang of the new weekly challenge, I feel incredibly accomplished. read more

Charlie Lin is a spectacular guitar teacher. I'm dyslexic which makes it is hard for me to read music. Charlie is very patient and figures out how to help me read the music better. When I'm stuck making something sound right, he always see's what needs to change and conveys what I need to do in a very positive manner.
