But the owner was so helpful and was able to quickly measure the strings and provide strings even though they were out of stock of banjo strings. You don't get that kind of service anymore. What a great experience! I brought in my poor, broken cigar box guitar, and Gannon immediately went to work on it. Great selection of guitars and equipment but most impressive to me was the absolutely fantastic service. I called about having my Floyd Rose equipped guitar tuned up and repaired and he actually got it done while I waited, but he went way above and beyond and got my playing style input and put some special tweaks in it to suit my style better. Definitely the coolest place to buy a guitar in VC! Locally owned small biz, good vibes, cool stuff, and whatever they don't have, they will try to get for you. The owner, who built the place from the ground up helps you get what you want and need in your musical quest, even if you're too new to know what it is, with no hard sell or pressure. He's the best I've seen a helping us newbie dummies get off the ground, and will hook you up with accessories and lessons after helping you pick a guitar that suits your pursuits, preferences and price range. There are guitar lessons going on here day and night, with rad, helpful teachers, (they are educated and accomplished musicians too) and kids and adults in the process of learning coming and going, so there is a bustling community vibe, and you make new friends to practice and jam with. We just recently moved away from Ventura, but for the two years we were there my daughter took guitar lessons at Guitar Planet. We miss this place! It's small and friendly with a very cool vibe. The owner is great with people, takes time to help everyone, especially all the kids that come in. The guitar teacher my daughter took lessons from - Randy Rich - is exceptional. She wanted to learn the blues, and he certainly knows the music. He is extremely knowledgeable and a great musician. He was patient and interested in her progress, and really understood how she learned and what worked for her and what didn't. He inspired her. She really misses his lessons and I wish we hadn't had to leave! One of the memorable teachers of her life I'm sure. read more

Saved by GANNON for My BASS Guitar !! I needed some emergency help with my Bass guitar, since I tried to straighten the neck and put strings on it my first time, and boy did I blow it. So I asked Gannon if he might help me, and he did not hesitate and Just put it on the bench and worked his skills on her and in 20 minutes or so. It was better than when I bought it. "AMAZING" He is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced Guitar MAN and a go to guy ,and he also knows how to shred absolutely. A small quiet place that makes you feel at home when you step in. And then there's the guy behind the counter who I think is the owner. He's great. He was incredibly nice, showing me things about my guitar that I didn't know, and offering to help me fix up the strings for a mere 3 bucks. I am a totally satisfied and now loyal customer! I found myself In a last minute, Friday afternoon emergency with a gig coming up in a few hours and two broken bass guitars. After calling and driving all around town, being turned down at every business I would approach, I stumbled upon Guitar Planet. I walked in and told my sob story to Gannon who without missing a beat said " of course man, let me see what I can do for you". My boyfriend bought a guitar here a few months ago and he was thrilled -especially after his experiences at guitar centers where they look at you like you're not worthy to be in the retail space. Anyway, now I get serenaded in my living room :D This is a little, independently run music store on the sleepy part of Main in Ventura. They specialize in guitars -with more acoustics and electrics crammed in to the space than you would think was possible, and all of the extra accessories and goodies that guitar players need. Amps, pedals, effects, strings tuners, polish, cases, gig bags -many of which get thrown into the bag for free after you buy a guitar. The owner is a gem and totally hooks you up. There is no hard sell. He shows you what he's got, demonstrates, lets you play, tells you the pros and cons and leaves you alone. He is passionate about carrying great products that are priced decently -regardless of whether they have a legendary name or not. Oh, and if you are a musician, but not a guitarist, he can and will order just about anything for you. I've ordered big boxes of finger cymbals for my students twice now and it's always a pleasure. Oh yeah, and they have guitar lessons in the store, and all the teachers are extremely well qualified and nice. (And pretty damn cute if that matters!) read more

I dropped in to browse. Not a huge selection, but really good service. The guy behind the counter was selling a kid and his mom the kid's first electric guitar. I've been playing guitar 20 years, and based on what I overheard this guy knows what he's doing and is a class act. The guy took a long time with what is basically a low-dollar sale for him, but he made sure the kid and his mom were comfortable with what they were getting. He even showed the kid how to tune and set up a Floyd Rose double locking tremolo - a challange for beginners! Anyway, I'll be stopping in here whenever I'm in town just to see what's new. read more

Great boutique guitar store . Owner is on site and is usually who you will be dealing with. From a product line up point of view he is like other boutiques in that some of the BIG manufacturers will not supply him (not buying enough). So you won't see any new Fender here. Still, his line of equipment, instruments, and ancillaries is fine all through the normal pricing level. You can equip yourself with workable stuff for a couple hundred dollars, or find bargains here that cost four grand. But it is his willingness to listen and work shit out with you that sets him apart from his competitors, big and small. Go there if you are a beginner and ask anything. Gannon (sp?) will tell you what he knows. If you are stuck at a plateau in your progress, bring your guitar and play for him, with him, and he can help you get started again. And his stable of music teachers who do lessons is excellent. What I'm trying to say is that this store excels in precisely those areas that the really big box stores fall short. read more
