Come here expecting a five star establishment and you will leave sorely disappointed. That being said, my star deductions are for two things that even a hard hit establishment needs to remain diligent about: 1) Worn down, ratty seats. Old is fine. But several of the seats had rips, tears and duct tape. 2) Worn out silverware, glasses, plates, etc. The water glasses were clean but had obviously gone thru the washer so many times they were pitted and "cloudy". Both of the above just need replacing. Plain and simple. As for the food? Classic truck stop diner fare and plenty of it. Service was very friendly (although we joked that our petite & slim waitress obviously doesn't eat here regularly---ha,ha). Would we stop in here again? Probably not. But not because there was anything wrong with the place. Mostly because I'm trying to watch my diet and although their chicken fried steak smothered in gravy was spot on guuuuuud. I gotta cut back on such things. And how does one say, "No" to stuff like that at a place like Jakes? I'm too weak. So, instead, I'll just avoid it altogether.

While that was an option, we were drawn to their beef ribs that were vacuum-sealed to take back home, and a delicious beef stick/cheese combo pack we could enjoy throughout the day. Delicious! BUT! We had their take on dragon tails, bacon-wrapped, sausage-stuffed jalapenos, and they were insane. Big, meaty, fresh, smoked, insane. We are not local, but do visit Moses Lake several times a year. I cannot imagine not stopping here every time we visit!

I stood there for a second, not knowing what to do, when a woman came into view and approached the door from the left and yelled out "Push!" She also had an angry look on her face. She was obviously an employee. Why did she act like that? Also, after I pushed the door open, and walked past her, she was saying to the other employee at the other register that even if she puts a "push" sign on the door, they still don't see it. Well, there was no sign on the door, but I think it would have been helpful to have one there. I'[m pretty sure that I would have seen it. It's not the customer's fault if the doors aren't working properly. I can understand when an employee gets frustrated, but she shouldn't have acted like that. I won't be shopping there again, unless I'm really desperate for a food item, which is a pity, since I like the selection of foods there.

(Walmart, 40 miles further, with 'crapshoot' customer service-I never know how I'll be treated). Akins, besides the high-quality food, big inventory, and low prices... excellent staff! Today, I wanted to buy four fresh, 5-pound "Draper Valley Farms" whole chickens, $1.99 a pound. $1.00 PER pound discount. (I saved $20 on the chicken alone) The butcher, COREY, quickly brought out to me, cheerfully, a 4th chicken, since I had bagged the last 3 that were in the cooler. ANDREW checked me out. Smart, polite and focused. He automatically gave me a "Senior Discount", $6.30 on my order total. My total discount on $119.50, $13.54. That's not nothing. (3 gallons of free gas) Obviously, the ownership of "Akins Fresh Market" is all in. Serious. They sell wine and liquor, too.
