Doug recently bought Block 40. We had a similar experience to last reviewer. We used to…read moreoccasionally split half of a quarter with my brother, and we each got about 2 bags of meat, through Basin Meats. This year, we decided to get a full quarter and ended up with about the same amount of meat. When we did the calculation, it came out to half the hanging weigh,, and the people we bought from said their cows have very little trim. Where did my other 25-35 lb of meat go? I heard TLC in Othello has a very impressive, honest operation. We'll have to start buying beef butchered through them.

Avoid them! I would do zero stars if I could. They are not upfront and, I suspect, downright…read moredeceitful! We get a quarter of a beef every year for several years, cow-pooling with the same group of people, and had been happy. Recently, this business underwent a management change, and it shows! Our quarter beef this year had all the filets removed from the T-Bones, (I have photos) and there were NO filets in our pitifully small three half bags of meat! We DID however, get 11, yes that ELEVEN, (count 'em!) chuck roasts! Do the math, folks, that's a cow with absolutely NO tenderloin, but 44 chuck roasts, the cheapest cut! That steer must look pretty weird walking into the slaughterhouse, huh? Or, our filets went into someone's purse or pocket! The other people who get a half of our beef got 6 filets, but where did ours go? When I called to talk with them about it, Doug, the owner, just kept on trying to pull up and talk about what I'd ordered last year. I don't CARE what I ordered last year, I want to talk about this really creatively cut-up steer from THIS year. Then he hung up on me and had the other person tell me he was "unavailable". Oh, and we paid them $173 for the privilege of cutting and wrapping 100.6 lbs of meat. That's about two and a half brown grocery bags full, if you want to know. Total came to over $8 per lb for this meat, so I suspect that some of our meat went "missing".

Visconti runs a little bit of a mini-empire in the greater Leavenworth-Wenatchee area (and…read morebeyond?). In addition to running the best Italian restaurant in the county, they also operate Fire and Ice (a pizza & charcuterie gastropub, and an ice cream & gelato parlor, respectively) at the Pybus Public Market in Wenatchee, they also have set up shop with a delicatessen in the ground level of their flagship restaurant in Leavenworth, near the western end of Front Street, where they carve and sling some of the most delectable meats, cheeses, and things in jars that you can find anywhere in Leavenworth! Having dined at Fire a few nights previous, my wife and I fell in love with the Hungarian sausage served there, and knew that we had to stop in and purchasing some, before embarking on our long drive home. Between that, some jerky for the kids, pepperoni sticks of various temperaments, mustards, pickled goods and the like, we spent a pretty penny making sure that our Christmas charcuterie board(s), when paired with cheeses previously purchased from the Cheesemonger's Shop just down the street, would be legendary. And they were! Few people, in the history of mankind, have enjoyed such a fabulous feast of cheese and crackers...and meat and pickled things, of course! No matter if you're suffering from the Christmas blues, seasonal depression due to our saturated and sunless winter weather, or just a plain ol' empty stomach seeking carnivorous and/or curdled culinary comfort, Visconti's has the "Cured" for what ails you. There are few maladies or conditions that can't be solved by a shaving of meat, a wedge of cheese, a dab of mustard, and a slice of preserved, pickled perfection. Prove me wrong!

We had stopped by the Leavenworth Sausage Garden for lunch, enjoyed their sausages there for lunch, and decided to stop by their retail store before heading back. It's small, with a deli counter and a refrigerated case containing some of the sausages, coming in packs of 4. We picked up a pack of the polish kielbasa, and bacon bratwurst. They have an award winning beef stick (landjaeger) that we wanted to try, and need to be gotten directly from the deli counter. All of it was decent, higher prices because of its location, with simple service. It wasn't too busy, with service being efficient: they want you in and out.

CJ's has become the primary place to do this, at least from the folks that we buy from. Every time it's been done, we've gotten a phone call from them and gotten to choose the cuts that we want and how much ground meat we'd like as well. They've always been super helpful with that process, as we are never totally sure what all the options are - but these guys are always friendly and impatient. It's located just outside of Wapato, a bit out in the country. It's relatively easy to get to, and is easy to get in and out of from the road. Inside, the set up is very simple. It's a room with a couple of freezers and a checkout desk. They've always got tons of different cuts of meat available, and the service is always quick. Everybody's always very friendly and each time I've been there, I've been in and out within a couple minutes. What you pay, they have you pull around the east side of the building and load things up for you. It's honestly tough to want to expect much more from these guys. The prices always seem fair, and even with recent inflationary pressures, their prices for preparing the meat seem to be pretty normal. Give these guys - we are always happy when we do!
