I'm constantly getting compliments on how well it looks. Most people don't even believe the house was was ever remodeled because of how well all of the walls, trim, and doors look. Aside from the aesthetics of the remodel, Stephen and all of the other contractors he recruits are trustworthy and have great workmanship. He is also very good about keeping you in the loop to make sure you know what needs to happen and when to make sure your project gets completed correctly....which is a rare experience when dealing with many of Austin's contractors. As for price, Wards Custom Woodwork charges a little more than the average Austin contractor. However, I think it was worth the slightly higher price. Not only is the owner, Stephen, there for the majority of the job, he is also very familiar with the permitting and regulation part of the projects. Which can be a HUGE pain, especially in Austin City Limits. I completely recommend Wards Custom Woodworks for remodeling projects. I'll probably be giving them another call in the future when I need some more remodeling work completed.

After meeting and talking to him I got a couple of additional estimates and decided to go with him. Stephen was very patient and helpful in my decision making of what to do. There were multiple considerations but the final decision was new fencing, roofing, exterior painting and a new 13 x 15 foot patio room addition. During this time Stephen was very good about providing me with various options in order to stay within my budget. Though this project had bumps along the way the final outcome is very nice. Stephen created a beautiful patio room that blends in perfectly with rest of the house. At first I had concerns of the windows and their locations. Stephen assured me it was for the best and the design turned out wonderfully. I have plenty of light and still have wall space for furniture. He also rounded the corners in each window to match the interior. The painting of the exterior went smoothly and is perfectly matched to its original color. We even did some additional trim to give it some pop. A satin finish was used giving it a nice sheen. Stephen chose a shingle that was slightly different in color but looks much better than the original color. Roofing is one of his specialties and turned out great. The fencing was a challenging area but now finished and quite striking. Stephen and his crew started early every morning. He and his crew get along well and work like a well oiled machine. They all have a good sense of humor and appear to enjoy their work. One of Stephen's strong suites is his sub contractor contacts. Every sub did an outstanding job. I ended up adding additional patio work to create a courtyard. His cement guy Phillip worked from 9 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. the next morning to complete the cementing before the forecasted rain arrived. He arrived early Monday morning to complete the work. Other than a few minor adjustments that I'm sure Stephen wiil take care of I basically have a larger nicer new home. When considering contractors your search should include Stephen and his crew.

While I had a basic idea of what I wanted, I debated getting a formal project manager to handle coordination of the full install. With a ton of experience doing this kind of install, Marcus helped out so much that I was pretty much able to handle coordination of the main pieces and personnel without needing to hire anyone else. He did a great job making the vision come alive and was transparent with any problems that arises (and importantly fixing them when necessary). He was friendly, fair with pricing, and also very quick-- framing and installation took only 2 separate, spread out days (to allow for drywalling and parts arrival in between). My personal experience with him in terms of communication was excellent, but I also purposefully avoided peak summer season so as not to catch him at a busy time. I based the hiring of him off of Yelp review but unfortunately this has not been a great…read moreexperience. Met with Nate in about a built in desk and a built in entertainment center in December and he told me he was booked 2-3weeks out. I said, sure no problem, we can handle it in January. Come mid January, he tells me he needs more time. I say sure. Come February I reach out and no answer. Called, emailed and texted, still no answer (mind you I had already given 50% down to him). Finally after not hearing from him for almost 3 weeks he responded and saying he was just getting started on building the cabinets. It's now mid-March and he finally got to installing the units. But don't expect him to arrive at the time he says. He was consistently 2-3 hours late to the time he promised to be here (which required us to adjust work schedules). First day he arrived at 2:30pm after saying he would be here at noon and then had to come back on a Sunday because he couldn't finish it all in one day. Now that's just the communications part, as for the quality of the work. I have been very disappointed. I had asked for a 1.5" wood top on my desk. After install I've noticed it's a single 3/4" plywood top with an additional 3/4" plywood strip on the front to make it look like it's 1.5". Not only that but because it's plywood there are obvious seams on the desktop. And the front is covered with a veneer which bubbled in multiple places and even though he came to glue it back down still does not look great. There are seams in multiple places where he could have easily gone with a full piece of dimensional lumber instead. There are screws protruding on the side of the cabinets which are the only sides that face out so would have expected the screws to be hidden. He left part of one of the tops uneven, even though I brought to his attention before the painters came, so he had to come back out and fix it and the painters had to come back out and fix the paint again. Also when he put in the shelves after the paint (because he didn't have the shelf pins and had to order from amazon), he scratched up the paint pretty badly in pretty obvious places. I've worked in construction as my dad was a contractor and I fully understand things happen or sometimes things don't work out as planned but for the price I paid I would have expected much higher quality and less chasing to get this completed.

I was very happy that they took ownership of the whole project, and I did not have to hire anyone else. Another thing that I really appreciated was that Chris was easy to work with. He gave me good advice when I asked his opinion. He never insisted on things to be done his way and always did it how I asked him to even when things had to be redone. The previous contractor had left it with visible drywall screws wide exposed cuts, etc. It looked terrible. After panicking because our countertops were scheduled for installation and looking through Jasons Yelp photos, we knew we needed to get on Jason's schedule. He books out sometimes 3 weeks, and this was last minute. We ended up delaying our countertop installation by 3 weeks in order to have him do the work. Waiting for Jason to do the work was 100% worth having a plywood island top for those 3 weeks. He showed up on time and got right to work. His cuts are precise, and the extension he built looks like it's always been there. We ended up hiring him to extend our kitchen cabinetry to the ceiling and add crown molding to it, as well as add trim pieces to our cabinets' blank sides before we had them painted. We also hired him to modify and install a wood hood over our stove top. Everything came out perfectly. We are more than impressed with his work and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again. This guy is a professional and the best kind. There was not one bad surprise with him. He even gave me some tips, as I was filling the cabinet handle holes prior to getting them painted.
