Several years ago I bought 2 white lampshades here and didn't discover, until I got home, that 1 was slightly bent or off-color. I exchanged the lampshade 2 times and both times the owners Alex and his wife Agnes were utterly professional, understanding and apologetic, explaining that the damage sometimes occurs in shipping. Prior to purchasing the lampshades, they encouraged me to bring in the lamps to decide the proper size and were so kind, helpful and patient in assisting me with the perfect lampshade. I have been coming here since then for all of my lighting needs and recently had 2 lamps repaired. Alex was very knowledgeable and thorough and recommended changing the outdated and unsafe electrical cord on 1 of the lamps. He repaired both lamps quickly and charged fairly. I came in needing a small repair to an inexpensive lamp ("the switch broke cause it's old"). At first, he offered to replace the entire kit, for nearly $60, but I said no thank you, explaining that the lamp itself hadn't cost that much. He then offered another solution, which was perfect and exactly what I needed. He fixed it onsite I was in and out in 10 minutes! My house is trying to kill my in-laws. Attempt #1 Gigantic mirror above the fireplace commits hari-kari on to the living room floor and misses my father-in-law by inches. Attempt #2 A bulb in the kitchen light fixture breaks, messes up the socket and suddenly shoots a spear of flame at my mother-in-law. She screams and ducks out of the way leaving our bar stool to take the hit. Attempt #3 The shower/tub combo conspires to entice my father-in-law to lean just a little... bit... further.....He slipped launching himself half out of the shower and hit the top of the toilet tank so hard with his head that he broke it in half. After many weeks and several discussions I think we've convinced them that we had nothing to do with these attempts on their lives. We love them and are happy to have them stay here. We've gotten the mirror and toilet fixed but weren't sure where to take the lamp. Well Hoooray for Yelp. Read the great reviews for Lighting World and took it there. No more deadly spears of fire. The in-laws however have decided they're not risking it. We're going to their house for Christmas. It'll give our house some more time to come up with Attempt #4. read more

Best Family owned and operated business ever!! Brought my chandelier in and Alex replaced all the stems due to deterioration, wired a new electrical cord and cleaned the whole chandelier. Absolutely perfect. Saved me a ton of money by reworking it all rather than buying a new chandelier and besides that, I loved this light as my parents have had it all my life. I have been here many times over the last 20 years, buying shades and having custom ones made. The woman who helped me, (I think her name is Agnes) is very knowledgeable and on this visit helped me quickly pick out a perfect shape for my antique lamp. She asked if I wanted the lamp rewired, since it's over 50 years old. I said yes. She said if I could wait 15 minutes they could do it now. I didn't have time to wait, so said I'd return that afternoon. The man who works with her and does repairs came out of the back room, looked at the lamp. He mumbled a price as I turned to leave, and I heard him say "five." I missed the first number since I didn't have my hearing aids in at the time. I thought the first number was a "2." $25 bucks would seem a fair price for the simple repair. (see photo) $35 would be ok for the convenience. When I returned that afternoon, Agnes handed me the bill. The charge for rewiring was $75. The cost of the shade was $58.85. I told Agnes I thought that was excessive. She said I gave them a verbal OK for the repair. I said I didn't have my hearing aids in and had I heard him say $75 I would have declined the rewire. This was not a difficult job. I told her I could do it myself. I've re-wired a lot of lamps, installed fixtures, ceiling fans and re-wired parts of my house. I know the 6 feet of new zip cord sells for $.25 a foot. The replacement socket he installed (not a 3-way) costs no more than $2.00. The male plug he installed sells for $1.03. Let's say you could easily get the parts for under $5.00. So, that leaves $70 for labor of 15 minutes tops. That's $280 an hour. I didn't have time to argue with her, and Agnes held her ground that I had agreed to that amount. I told her that while I did nod, it still was excessive. I gave her my credit card. I don't know if Agnes was embarrassed, but she didn't look at me as I picked up the lamp and walked out. I've bought a number of Tiffany lamps from this mom & pop lamp store. Their prices are fair to good and they bring in a lovely selection of lamps. They also sell any kind of bulb you can think of, lamp pieces (say you've miss-placed the top to a Tiffany lamp during a move, as we did), lamp cleaning supplies, wall switches....if it had to do with lights they have it or will cheerfully order it for you. They have a small lot directly behind the business and I'd recommend parking in it. They have a rear entrance which leads directly into the shop. Note: They also repair broken lamps (including Tiffany). They repaired several of ours: good as new....one however, was simply glued together and still won't turn on......Until they make that repair right, I can't award them that cherished fifth star. read more

I actually used yelp.com to find information about lighting repair shops in my area. I came across Lighting World and voila! - right down the street! I took my lamp in to them to see if it could be repaired. Within 5 minutes my lamp was as good as new. Alex took it right back to his workroom, fixed it and I was on my way. Recently took a table lamp that had a short circuit to Alex to be rewired & noticed that they had a selection of shades for sale too. Remembered that I had another, slightly different lamp that needed a new shade. It wasn't an exact match to the one with the short circuit but I had been using them together because the one with the short circuit was at least 50 years old & I had never been able to find a matching mate for it. When I returned to pick up the repaired lamp, I brought the old shade from the 2nd lamp with the intention of finding a replacement shade that would look the same. In speaking to Agnes, I realized that I should be looking for a shade that was like the one on the repaired lamp, and not like the original, damaged one. Agnes knew just exactly what kind of shade would make the 2 lamps look pretty much the same, the same size and shape and same level. She expertly modified the harp on the old lamp and found a shade just the same as the good one. Now my 2 lamps look almost identical. This place is literally half a block from my home. Perfect location. I first thought I would go there for all my lighting needs. I first visited this shop just a day after I moved in, in September 2012. I was looking to replace the glass light bulb shades on my kitchen ceiling fan because the ones that came with the fan were much too ornate for my taste. I just wanted simple, frosted white glass shades. So I walked over to Lightening World to check out their selection. I was pretty disappointed because they didn't have much of a variety either in the store or available for special order, and also because, considering they were pretty shoddy quality, I was going to end up paying like $50 for a set of four ($12.50 each). But, I didn't really know the going market rate for replacement glass lamp shades for ceiling fans, so, I trusted the guy behind the counter, "special ordered" the least ugly set I could find, and left. He said he'd call when they came in, and I could pay on pickup. Interestingly, he made it a point to emphasize that the (thin) book from which I ordered my shades pretty much included ALL the styles of shades available for purchase on the market (by consumers purchasing small quantities, like me). Which seemed odd, but I'm not really a Home Depot type of girl, so again, I trusted. Weeks went by, and he never called. Having forgotten about the shades, I was in Lamps Plus in Northridge looking for a floor lamp, when low and behold, I came across an impressive selection of ceiling fan lamp shades. Many more than offered by Lighting World. I even found perfect frosted white shades, for $3.99 each. In stock. Naturally, I purchased a set of four, for under $20, and never returned to Lighting World. Until today. Two years later. Today is Thursday, September 4, 2014; on this beautiful, sunny, summer day, I was desperate and in a hurry because I needed an unusually shaped 25 watt light bulb. I checked the store website to confirm it was open until 6:00 p.m., and at 5:35 p.m., I got into my car, drove around the corner, and parked directly in front of the store. I went to open the store front door, only to find it locked. The store was dark. No signs. No explanation. Guess they just went home early/took the day off/whatever. Nice way to run a business. Then I remembered the way they'd handled the 2012 transaction, and I thought "figures." So, to sum up: (1) über limited inventory, (2) marginal product quality, (3) triple the price of its competitors, (4) no employee follow-up or follow through, and (4) unreliable, inconsistent hours of operation. Please note that if you look at my other reviews, you'll see that I don't like to write negative reviews. But as for Lighting World, I don't see any reason why I would go back. Why agree to pay triple the price for an item that never arrives? That's insanity, no? Ten minutes later today, and less than half a mile away, I found my unusual light bulb at the Crystal Palace, just west of Lighting World on the south side of Ventura Blvd. I arrived there at 5.55 p.m. They were lovely, OPEN, and accommodated me--no problem. First..Open on a Sunday. Not with some flunky but with someone knowledgeable friendly and with genuine care. My wife and I are having the kitchen remodeled and have been looking everywhere for "dimmable" under cabinet lights that can be dimmed at the light switch (not via some special extremely large transformer). We don't need enough light to be seen from space but enough to enhance a workspace or mood if needed. The gentleman at Lighting World demonstrated how the lights work. provided everything needed to make them work and gave us phone numbers for our contractor to call if there were any problems. I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone. They may have nice lamps but that's all I can say. I recently purchased 2 crystal lamps for about $400. They must not have a large supply since my lamps were taken off the floor. They wrapped them before I could inspect them. As soon as I got home I noticed a chip in one of the lamps. I called the store and all they did was take my number but they never followed up with me. What horrible customer service! How can they expect to stay in business with that behavior? read more
