This is a LOCAL's hang. That being said, everyone was super friendly. The bartender/waitress is a gem. The food was tasty. They charge for side sauces, so be aware. The bathroom was... usable but kind of weird. They have a nice little patio AND TouchTunes! If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by for a drink and a snack. read more

My first experience was surprising, shocking and fun. I've been back a couple of times. Not so much fun, but it's a local spot. Haven't eaten there, not the kind of food I eat. Thought about ordering Onion Rings but they're pre frozen, thanks but NO. Great spot for a beer, dory guys but your marketing skills suck. The interior is exactly what you would expect! Dark! After staying away five years because of a bad experience, I gave the place another try. Despite the change in ownership, it's still a good place to avoid. I wanted to like this place so much. It's cute, has great views, it's clean. The bartender was so nice and attentive. We specifically came here for the Phoenix dart boards. Then came the "owner." To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. We had had a full meal, lots of drinks, and were playing darts to warm up for us to play league at another place with Phoenix boards. He interrupted our game play to literally tell us to "hurry up" because he and his 2 friends had to play. Then tried to justify it because we aren't from around Des Moises. I'm sorry? Who has league at 4pm? Nobody. I don't know if he took issue with us because we were not Hispanic? What he didn't know was I speak fluent Spanish, and know what he was saying about us, and I didn't appreciate it. My wife decided to check the place out. Right after ordering we started to get a very bad vibe from the place. Many of the patrons were not enjoying themselves. There was a small group of loud individuals who were eyeing people to start a fight. Even the staff was on edge. We just downed our drinks and left. The service seems to be getting slower, the music is getting louder and the drinks weaker. I was offered small, medium or pint drink. I did no know places serve medium but got my usual pint and as it was being given to me I had to remind the staff person there was an ingredient missing. Oh, if customers have to wear masks shouldn't staff??? The music was so LOUD with only 11 people in the bar I heard people across the bar yelling to hear each other. I said it was too loud and I was leaving. The bar tender said ok and got me my tab. Although the food is better and it is cleaner, the staff are slower to respond. It use to be a fun dive bar. Absolutely disgusting! This establishment is clearly not sanitized. Ants on the tables as seen in the picture and tables are never wiped down. I sure do hope they are properly cleaning all the drinking glasses, dishes, and silverware. Don't waist your time and money on this place. We ordered the chicken wings with the hot hot sauce. Forget what they actually call it but it was freaking good! The wings were great but I could definitely take some of that sauce to-go! Basically a dive bar with great food which is always the goal. Reading some of the 1 star reviews and I get it. This place has really changed! The crowd is super low key, they all seem to be watching sports. There is TV's everywhere. Not really my thing until football season. Anyways I went there with my husband and I had the burger he had the sirloin with a baked potato. They serve the steak on a stonegrill, it smelled so good and omg the taste. I'm pretty sure I haven't tried something that good in awhile. The steak also came with a baked potato and they have a potato bar where you can fill er up! I got the burger, it almost reminded me of an in and out burger but better, if that is possible. It was so good! The fries fresh cut and fried, also very good. The bartender with the accent is really great, the place was packed and he never seemed flustered or not in control. Also very nice! Overall I would call The Lighthouse the best kept secret in Des Moines. One more thing, I tried the fried chicken once too, best I've had in I don't know how long. The karokee host is the worst he's always drunk and never keeps an order for the singer's and actually has the balls to get mad and let us know on the microphone that you'll sing when you will sing, after seeing his friends and himself sing many times and get skipped hour after hour. Extremely disappointed. After an upsetting visit to the owners other establishment on the highway (where he tried to serve me sparkling cider and charge me for champagne) months ago I have refused to go into the lighthouse after finding out Gabriel was the new owner. I figured enough time had passed, I need to get over it, and give my local neighborhood bar a chance. Tonight I went in, great crowd, good service. When I received my bill I realized it was $14 for a mimosa. FOURTEEN DOLLARS. The itemized receipt states they use "J Roget" for their champagne, extremely bottom of the barrel sparking wine costing approximately 1.20 per bottle cost. They also use the splits, 187ml to be exact. Normally this would be one serving (anywhere else in the area) however it was split between 2 glasses. I have never paid more than $7 for a mimosa at a DIVE BAR in my life. For 3 "drinks" my tab was $42. As someone in the industry I have never felt more robbed than the subpar drinks I had tonight at the lighthouse. This just further reiterates why I will never return to any establishment that Gabe owns ever again. What an absolute joke. read more

Call ahead to make sure they're open. The hours on their website and yelp are not accurate. We showed up at 11:30 for a drink and they said they were closed (called last call). It was a Wednesday and understandably it was probably a dead night, so I understand staff wanting to get home early if possible, but it's not a good precedent to start...especially when the site says 2am daily and 1am on yelp. Luckily, the All-star sports bar across the street was open...and luckily we were staying at the marina inn nearby so it wasn't that big a deal. It would've sucked if we drove out our way to find out they decided to close 2.5 hours earlier than the website dictated. I don't want to hurt the place with a BAD review because its new management...I just wanted to convey that you may want to call ahead to make sure they're actually staying open. read more

This place used to be rough. I never went there unless with a group including guys. Now it's clean, friendly-- did I just say friendly about a northwest place? Friendly bartender, friendly crowd, mix of ages. Great beer selection, great happy hour, great fresh food, great service. The margaritas are better than at any of the other places in town. All this and at decent prices. This is where I take co-workers or meet friends and family after work. It's a Cheers kind of place now. I feel comfortable stopping in by myself for a dark beer and juicy burger on my way home when I'm too tired to cook. From time to time, there's a woman who will read your cards for free - a bit of fun. I'm looking forward to patio weather. Definitely a place to go out of your way for. The crowds are mixed with yuppies, guppies, singles, gen-x, cheaters, the wanna-bees, divorcees, baby boomers, barflys, barsplats, couples, bikers, rockers, big hairs and the list goes on. It's a place to hang out with friends, make new friends, ditch the old friends, hook up with other friends, chat with friends, friends of friend's friend, and a friendly place to hang out. There are pool tables, juke box, dart boards, pull tabs and FSN on flatscreen to keep you company. Around the bar is always full, but there are few tables n' seats and two loverly long couches and love seats to sink your bottoms into and have intense personal conversations, read a book, or just sit and watch sports. Strange thing there is the ladies toilet, the seater is about 1" from the wall. Yes, it's awkward to do your personal thang. You just have to sit sideways or something. last night I showed up to the lighthouse Lounge at 7:30 and told the bartender that I was there to prepare for a large party that would be arriving at 9:30 ish. I had been told that they would be aware that we were coming. They have not received that phone call!! But they did not skip a beat and jumped right in setting tables up for at least 20 people and helping me to decorate them for arrival of a party bus that held a bachelor and his Bachelorette along with their bridal party, and family. The two female bartenders who for the life of me I can't remember their names but refer to themselves fondly as the "Dream Team" were amazing ! Along with a third one that was there in training. By the time everybody had arrived I imagine we had well over 40 people in our group. I did not hear any complaints about slow service and there was plenty of drinks going around. It was karaoke night. Which we had no clue until we showed up but that just added to our evening. A large majority of our group remembers when the Lighthouse was the Dugout. Which was the reason for this stop. I want to thank the bar staff and kitchen staff for helping to make this evening as memorable as it was! This is the type of bar most people will go to escape their spouses. It was pretty DEAD inside with a few people sitting around but a Seahawks game was playing on multiple flat screen TVS so I could tell the people that were inside, were regulars. The sign outside the building said there was fried chicken and that's what really made me want to stop inside. I skimmed the small menu they had and noticed they had bacon stuffed mushrooms, when I was ready to order the bartender informed me that they were out of mushrooms..... So I had a drink, ordered the fried chicken and waiting a while for my food. When I finally got my chicken, I couldn't wait to try it. 4 pieces of fried chicken, a small side of ranch and It came with huge ass jojos, that were pretty much whole potatoes cut in half. It wasn't seasoned the way I thought it would be and I was a little disappointed but I shouldn't expect much from bar food. I wish the jojos were cut smaller instead of having huge ass potatoes, it would of kept more of the flakyness and flavor that makes jojo wedges hella bomb. I don't think I'll be back. read more

It hurts me to only give this place 3 stars. It was a cute little bar in a very quiet area. Upon entering, I could tell that everybody that was there was a regular. The whole entire place was clean, good music was playing, and a hockey game was on. Awesome! The bar also had padding along the edges so your elbows don't get sore, which I've NEVER seen before. It took a sad turn when we interacted with the bartenders. So rude! They act like they don't want you there. At all. I asked one of the bartenders if they had anything WITHOUT hops, because I'm allergic to beer, and she goes, "Uh. No." and looks at me like I'm stupid. Okay... Cool. My boyfriend was trying to play their pull tab game, and to play you have to buy the tabs from the bartender. We waited ten minutes and they didn't ask us if we needed anything. Finally, we said excuse me and they just go, "Yes?" We bought the tabs and didn't win anything, sadly, but went on to play darts. That was fun, at least! There was a little dog running around the bar which caught me off guard but he was adorable and so friendly! He is literally the reason why this place has it's third star. Without him, it'd be two stars. This place is awesome and would definitely be a four or five star if it wasn't for the rude ass bartenders. What ever this used to be called they upgraded a lot! This place used to be a bit sketchy, so I always stayed away from it. Now, I don't feel bad if I take my mother here. LOL. Weird, but I like to study while inside lounges and bars. Most people prefer the library but for some reason lately i've been able to focus better at locations such as this. The colors used were entirely too dark, but they have surely upgraded and I likey. I'll be back, again and again that's for sure! read more

Went to the lighthouse again and I love it even more! The bartender is great. He is always in a great mood and he never disappoints us when it comes to awesome service. The chef is great and the food was fantastic. We had the clam strips and a burger and they were both delicious. This place is clean, friendly, and gives off such a good vibe. I was here for a paint n' sip class. A groupon I'd purchased. I'd never been here before, and unless I'm in the area by chance I probably won't return. It's a dingy dive bar (no offense, that's my jam!) but I have my local dive's I frequent and this is out of my area. It's dark, small, low ceilinged, and somewhat nautical themed. The drinks were strong, average price, and the employees seemed nice enough. In addition to the bar there were pub tables and booths. I think they had a food menu but I didn't check it out. If you're into the local rough crowd and looking for a place where, unless you become a regular, no one will remember your name, this may be the place for you! If you're looking for something a little less underground feeling and fancier, keep walking. read more

I usually don't come here but I needed a quick bite and I heard the food was good so I thought I would stop in. The basic salad wasn't great but that's ok the Chipotle Fries were yummy and I had the BEST margarita I've ever had (ONLY made by Ian)... I'm picky about margaritas, I usually don't order them...
