Went with this credit union instead of our normal bank when we purchased a used vehicle because the dealership suggested going with them because they beat all other APR offerings. Sure enough they were about 3/4 a percent less than my normal bank. Or so I thought. To actually get the the lowest rate I would need to also sign up for every type of account they offer, all with fees. I went with the minimum of opening a checking account with a $5 minimum balance because the additional fees for all accounts would have made it less cost effective than getting the lower APR. I find out the first month that they charge a fee for paying electronically. So I don't set up an online account since I have to mail a check in monthly. Then a couple months later I get a penalty fee for having less than the $5 minimum in the savings account. Turns out they charge a $2 fee for monthly paper statements, which was never disclosed. This was automatically deducted from my account which meant I know longer had the five dollar minimum in savings. So basically, they charge fees for all the accounts they offer including checking. I haven't had a fee on a checking account in over 15 years! They charge you extra if you try to manage all of your accounts in payments electronically while simultaneously charging you if you get paper statements mailed. This credit union clearly takes every opportunity to nickel and dime there customers! I would have gone with a higher rate from my normal bank what I have known this credit union was so lousy! I decided to pay extra each month so that they would get less money from me in the long run. Wouldn't you know, they "mistakenly" processed my check for $1000 less than what I had made it out for. With all the other shady and dated procedures I feel like they were probably doing that on purpose so that the account stays open longer and they can nickel and dime me a little bit more. read more

Their online payment system for car loans is basically a joke, and so difficult to figure out, keeps saying loan not found!? Archaic system. Also, I made a car payment by phone. I got an email saying I had not paid it, I had verification via my bank statement the payment was made and taken out of my bank account. Trudy Thibodeau had awful customer service skills, she had an attitude when she learned it was their mistake and my payment was put toward an account of another customer, I asked her if this would affect my credit score, she said it would not, but guess what? On paper, their loan rates are great. Do not be deceived. Their auto loan link is to an outside service that only lets you buy a car at "participating" dealers. No where do they mention that. Do not be fooled. You will ding your credit score for a worthless loan approval. Free ATMs? Do a search before opening an account. I can get more free ATMs in Alaska than I can find in Portsmouth. Went in 45 minutes before closing time with $300 of rolled coin. I had called the day before and was told they don't have coin counters so it had to be rolled. When I got there they told me they didn't have enough time to process it. I don't really even have a problem with that but they refused to give me any kind of receipt that I was leaving the coin. I was going to a wedding so I didn't have any choice but I felt very uncomfortable leaving that much money without them assuming some responsibility for it. read more

UPDATE: I'm eating crow this morning. NECU came through for us and help us greatly. Turns out the people who run the Customer Service Center at night are just a hired service and not representing the quality I have come to appreciate from NECU. I must say again how impressed I am that a real person from NECU reached out at 11:30 pm to help us out. Thank you again Debbie. Today I went in to our local branch and go the fraud problem taken care of in mere moments. SO I'm updating my rating and feeling like I was wrong. OLD: Discovered 3 fraudulent charges on our checking account to the tune of $1206.01. Called the Customer Service people and got forwarded to their Fraud Department. Didn't even suggest cancelling the card associated with the fraud. The automated system at the Fraud Department didn't recognize my phone number or my wife's phone number so the system hang up on me. Called Customer Service back. This time after verifying all our info twice got my card cancelled and the Customer Service Rep told me to call the stores where the fraudulent charges occurred and ask for a refund. One of the stores is Best Buy. Do they really think that Best Buy is going to just cancel a charge because I call and ask for it? The worse part is it's a Best Buy in Miami Florida. NECU systems aren't advanced enough to notice such a charge like other more modern banks do. I finally got through to a human at the Fraud Department who couldn't help me even a little bit. She couldn't see my account information. NECU writes on their web site how "We are family", "We are loyal", "We are helpers", "We are neighbors". That's just not true. Don't believe a word of it. They love your money and that's the beginning and end of it. If you need their help you won't get it. We've been customers for over 15 years. No more. By far the worst Institution I've ever had to deal with. The most inconvenient. Late charge astronomical fees for paying in any form they accept other than a check handed to them in branch. A $10 fee to pay over the phone it is $5 fee to pay online is absolutely ridiculous. Why anyone would want to bank with them I do not know. To make things worse, I live 2 hours from the closest branch and when I tried to call them after it locks me out my account online, well I'm using the password I set up and wrote down, it tells me they have no automated password reset, and no customer service line past their normal business hours. This credit union is terrible, I sign into my account but am not able to make a payment, and when I am I have to pay a 5 dollar fee, or call them and pay a 10 dollar fee, nothing online is quick or easy, last person I spoke to on the phone was rude and seem annoyed I didn't have my account number in my hand at that very moment. With no doubt I'll be looking to refinance my truck elsewhere just to be done with them. read more

I have never had a good experience. I continue to get charged a mysterious fee every month and every time I contact customer service it's for a different reason. Each time I go through the steps that will supposedly get rid of this fee. I've been hung up on and ignored. Every time I call they are having "technical difficulties" and cannot assist me. I am 55 years old so I have seen much in the way of bad business,but northeast credit union has done the most disgusting thing any business has ever done. inquired about a home equity loan,The loan rep. asked all the qualifying questions and was told everything met their requirements. application went to underwriting and we were approved pending home appraisal. appraiser came out asked a lot questions we answered. 1 week after appraisal we received word that they have declined the loan, this process took 4 weeks. We wanted this loan to install a artesian well as we have run out of water with our present dug well. They declined the loan due to how our home is set on the property,which the home has been here for 18 years with no issues. How our home is set should have been a qualifying question! Now we have a hard inquiry on our credit affecting our credit score and now we have lost valuable time. Now we are starting over for a loan but the contractors we hired are busy and have informed us they cannot drill the well until next spring. Now we own a home with no water until next spring! BEWARE OF NORTHEAST CREDIT UNION! At some point doesn't actual customer service matter! These pencil neck paper pushers have created a real serious problem for us. So I'm worrying that someone has hacked my account. I call the lady G.B. to find out that I had a $2.10 unpaid balance for last month. It's on the statement for this month. I have a car loan through Northeast credit union, and for the past six months I have been trying to sent up my loan payment on auto pay. The first two times I called Northeast to have the help me set it up, they had me set it up incorrectly. The third time I had a lady give me a serious attitude because I wanted to speak to a manager about the issues was having. The fourth month I called, I spoke to someone who claimed they "fixed my auto payment issue", however what they meant was they cancelled my auto payment and never set it back up. This place is awful and if you arent a computer person, their online banking will confuse you. GO TO DCU THEY ARE WAY BETTER THAN THIS CREDIT UNION WILL EVER BE! read more

I called and had to talk to three different people, got three different stories, and two of them didn't know the policy of the bank and down right lied to me, and now its costing me money. been with necu for years now. have all of my loans through them. been very loyal to them over the years. they show no loyalty back. the app is terrible and says "user blocked" randomly. It is not a username or password typo as they are both saved to the app. it just simply does not work sometimes. other times it works great. customer service is not great. definitely better options out there for banks/credit unions. read more

I am, unfortunately, learning from others regarding NECU's auto loan department. I purchased a Nissan in early 2014 and had to finance through NECU. Not my preference, but their interest rate was appealing. During the initial, few months of automatic payments between my home bank and NECU, everything seemed fine. Then NECU started charging a $5 processing fee. I contacted NECU and asked why the fee and was told it was because they had to initiate the transfer from my home bank to their's. I've worked with EFT systems. It takes 2 min of setup and then the computers automatically perform the task based upon the established schedule for however long the duration. Seriously, $5 for a computer to do what it was programmed to do? However, if I asked MY home bank to send the payments, there is no fee. Gee, how thoughtful! So, I changed it so my home bank would send the payments. Fast forward and now I'm making extra weekly payments to pay down the loan faster so I can get my family out of debt faster. Every single payment comes from my bank as a physical check and the check says "APPLY TO PRINCIPAL ONLY" in the Memo line. Further, I contacted NECU to request a notation be made on the account that extra weekly payments outside the contracted amortization schedule be applied to PRINCIPAL, only. Only a handful of payments have been applied correctly since September. I have emailed multiple times, requesting the payments be applied correctly. Of course, NECU apologizes and attempts to reapply the payments. Unfortunately, they are still misapplying the interest...oops, sorry...penalty for each additional payment. I cannot wait to be done with this bank! If you can afford another bank's loan interest rates, go with that bank and avoid NECU!! read more

The absolute worst bank I have ever dealt with in my life. We have our auto loan through this bank because it was offered from the dealership. 1. It is incredibly difficult to use their online account. I did not even have access to my payoff amount, and had to email someone to ask for it. I often have to chase down various parts of the website to even be able to sign in at the correct place 2. They now charge a fee to pay your bill through automatic debit. This should be the easiest and cheapest way for a business to accept payment and they charge a $5 fee per transaction. I have NEVER had another business charge a fee to make a payment like this. 3. Since this charge started, I switched to paper statements to avoid the fee. I have now received a letter that I have a savings account (with only $5 in it) with them and will be charged a fee for using their paper statements. I do not remember opening this account, and do not remember putting $5 in it. I'm assuming it was opened to get the car loan. So I now have to contact them to change this before this fee results in me owing them money. Perhaps they have a low interest rate, so you might think of opening an account or a loan with them. But they will get you another way. Their customer service is not helpful. Beware!!! read more

Tried to pay off car loan in full today over the phone but due to it being over 1500 dollars they refused to take it over the phone. This is just the most recent issue. I would make double payments sending in the invoice for that month and was informed that the people in the back don't look at the dates on the invoices and just apply it to your account thus making me look like I'm a month late and receiving collection calls...at least 3X this happened. I have been a member of this Credit Union for almost 30 years. We have every loan through them. I recently went through the call center for a car loan for the first time, horrible! They have NO customer service skills, they don't put the custom first, Shelley from that department told me she did NOT have time to get to my documents because she is at a call center and calls come first before processing documents in front of her, all she had to do is make sure everything is there then pass it on to the bank for closing... they all tell you not to call back they will call YOU when they decide they want to..... it's taking 3 days to close on a loan I applied for and I NEVER once received a call from them with an update. I had to make the calls to ask, if she had everything ect.... Northeast, custom service needs to be your first Priority. Get rid of that loan call center in Portsmouth. Bring loans in house, with customers service your first property. My one star is for the call center in Portsmouth, loan department. I think one star is to much.... read more

I would rather pay fees than deal with this credit union. How crazy is it that there is only one phone number for ALL branches which are all located in NH. If the call volume is to high, you get routed to a call center in Michigan who pretends to be North East. They can't help you with anything. They can't even transfer you to the branch you do business with. By the way, you wait at least 20 minutes on hold for them to tell you they can't help. read more

Upset, hurt and angry. Member for 3 years loyal. With my car loan. This past weekend I traded in my car. Having a balance with northeast in good standing.. The Honda dealership requested a 10 day payoff. Simple right?.. Nope. So I'm in day 4 with my new car, new bank. Was approved through Honda at a better rate. Far better.. Having good credit you have options. I went with the better deal and traded in the car I was financing through northeast. Today I begin to get calls from their title dept saying that I'm past due, that the 10 day pay off was insufficient.. I still have my 215 payment for July due and that in order for northeast to send the title to Honda I would need to make that payment. What?! Yes.. I sound crazy. I'm pissed. I call the dealership who assures me that northeast is wrong that on Sunday we got the amount two times from two different reps. They even have it documented I'm assuming by email or fax so Monday I pick up my car.. Sign my paperwork done. Due to the lapsed day they even called Monday to adjust by one day, Honda. My payment was due to be removed from my account on the 18th right.. I communicated with northeast that I was going to stop my bill pay and have it roll through the 10 day payoff. The guy at the call center said I will document this all incase of an issue but assured me that no, no problems. Word. I get a call today saying I'm past due, this can effect your credit.. The vehicle will remain in my name till the payment is made. What? Throughout the day it's bothering me so I figure I'll reach out to the branch I use. I speak to a woman named Lori, begins to raise her voice on the phone, this needs to be taken very seriously this needs to be paid right today giving me her hours, what? That this is my fault for being late, what?! 3 years Northeast never late.. Always on time always in good standing. Even if it was 2-3 days due to bill pay or when I changed banks due to your checking fees.. Went to service Btw.. Amazing.. I would call and they would tell me that I had 15 days, not as a grace period but before it would be considered late. So Lori goes in on me like she's collecting debt saying this isn't a argument this is a lapse in judgment.. What?! I work as a underwriter for a lending company.. At all levels we do not speak to our customers in anyway near how I was spoken to today. I was calm and trying to find out was was going on. Even when she began to shout over me speaking "Nope" "nope" "your incorrect" I just stayed professional. End of the day it's going to be taken care of. I request copies of the check from Honda, taking my original pay off amount on my note for the car.. Hey look they match. So what's the issue. Now I'm just hurt.. For a great customer to have communicated with your bank, several occasions.. Voicing that no I'm not paying you on the 18, trading in my car.. To always being on point, on time with my payments, even to open a credit card with your bank.. To be treated like this? Really?! End all result. Honda called me saying regardless it would be taken care of by the end of the day, received a call around 5, was taken care of. So if you read this book of a review. You work your tail off, you have good credit? Avoid this bank. Go with service credit go with a bank for the vehicle manufacturer.. 3 years no issues, always a good customer.. To this? BBB has been notified as well. I may be one person, but this could happen to someone less fortunate and it could really effect them. Think about it. What's 215 dollars? I have financed three car loans with NECU and have absolutely been in excellent standing with them. Never a late payment. Recently, I was denied a loan based upon the balance of my current accounts, including my mortgage. My credit score is well into the mid 700's and my monthly debt to income ratio leaves me with a substantial amount of disposable income at the end of each month to support the monthly payment over a 5 year period, especially since the majority of my income is a pension and will never go away unless my untimely death. If I could pay the balance of my mortgage (and this is probably most people), I wouldn't need to rely on any bank for any project or purchase and I suppose the bank wouldn't be that successful if that were the case. I am a fiscally responsible patron and that fact is fully supported by my credit report and my monthly income. When I asked to speak with the underwriter to fully understand their decision to deny my loan, I was told that was not possible as "They don't do that". I would never recommend this bank and I certainly don't feel they are supportive of those who are deemed worthy of support. I would understand their decision if my information was reflective of someone who presented a much greater risk than I and the fact they were so unwilling to further discuss is even more reason for me to never do business with them in the future. read more
