There were too few workers and those that were there spent a very long time with each of the customers. One order took twenty minutes for a loaf of bread. There is no excuse for terrible conditions that cause people to almost collapse in pain. I finally gave up and couldn't get out of there fast enough. Friends who visited Roseburg said this to us: "We had lunch at a vegetarian bakery that was your kind of place. " We said to them: "Great! What's the name?" They replied to us: "We can't remember. But it's run by a commune." Obviously these friends are not Yeeps! ;-) Try as I might, I could not come up with a match when I searched Roseburg in advance of a visit there last week. But through serendipity, when we were eating a mediocre dinner except for remarkable bread at a Roseburg area restaurant and asked where the bread was made, that answer provided the first piece of the puzzle. The bread, we were told, came from Lighthouse Bakery. Following that lead, we found Lighthouse Center Bakery is not in Roseburg but in the countryside in Umpqua, with the added bonus of a beautiful back roads drive to arrive there. It is run by a collective, hence our friends' reference to a commune, that follows the teachings of Sant Baljit Singh. I took photos of the exterior and the beautiful country view you see from the window of the spacious if spartan, sparkling Lighthouse Center Bakery. But when I tried to take photos inside, starting with a tray of gorgeous nasturtiums grown by the Center's greenhouse and used to garnish the food plates served in the cafe, I was firmly but politely told it is the Center's policy that no photos are allowed inside. So you'll just have to trust me on this; the bakery case and counter were full of wonderful breads of all kinds, we chose a hazelnut herb to take home, as well as sweet treats, our choices were almond crescent cookies and almond anise biscotti. They also had yummy hummus and pasta salad and other to go deli items. The space includes a cafe with table seating that serves a variety of fresh green salads as well as vegetarian and vegan burgers and sandwiches and soups. We hear their pizza is top notch, but it is only available on certain days. No alcohol served. Consistent with their beliefs, Lighthouse Center uses no animal proteins, including eggs, in their food production but they do use dairy and honey in some. For people who can't eat gluten, and that includes some of my family members so I notice, there are several gluten free options. There is also a small store space worked into the bakery and cafe that sells bulk items, like grains and honey and maple syrup, as well as come packaged foods. And in a perfect model of all people being welcome, the entire space is equally accessible to people of all physical abilities. Next time we visit the North Umpqua Valley wine region or Roseburg proper, we'll make it a priority to enjoy a meal at Lighthouse Center Bakery as well as stopping in for take away. It is among the best, if not the best, of food available in the Roseburg area. We think it would be five star worthy anywhere. If it wasn't a three and a half hour drive from our front door, we'd be regular customers. read more

There is no missing meat and eggs here, everything we tried was so tasty. Yep. Even us carnivores find this place captivatingly wonderful. They will politely inform you it is not permitted, if you dare to try. And no pets in the outdoor dining area either. I have been traveling to Roseburg monthly for work for 9 months now, and I have to say that this is the best food and establishment in the county. Lighthouse Bakery is a charming vegetarian establishment run by a group that operates under the mantra: "Service to humanity, compassion for all of creation, unity in diversity, a natural lifestyle, and meditation on the inner Light and Sound are the basis of Sant Baljit Singh's teachings, the inspiration for Lighthouse Center Bakery" - per their website. How interesting, especially in this rural, backwards area of Oregon...I dig. The portions are huge, the food is healthy, colorful and delicious, and you will honestly leave this place loving tofu like you never knew you could. It is the only tofu I have ever enjoyed! I highly recommend the Portobello burger, the Asian Salad and the COFFEE. Their beans come from a roaster in Eugene, and it's worth the 10 min drive from Roseburg just to grab a cup to enjoy with one of their delicious pastries available each day. Wow, what gem! I was driving to Roseburg from Coos Bay and had some time for lunch; I randomly heard about this place from an Umpqua resident a few weeks ago. The route my navigation took me to get there from Tenmile was bucolic - I've never actually used 'bucolic' I'm a sentence, but it was the word that kept jumping to mind as I drove through miles of gorgeous landscapes. Then, in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, is a building with a crowded parking lot but plentiful indoor and covered and uncovered outdoor seating. I had the powerhouse sandwich and was blown away by the quality and quantity of the different lettuces, micro greens, cucumbers and tomatoes. The avocado and vegan mayo oozing out the sides helped keep all the veggies wrangled together. I got a slice (more of a slab, really) of carrot cake to go and picked at it the rest of the day - chock full of carrots and nuts. I don't typically like raisins in my baked goods but did not mind the few I stumbled over here. The frosting was a perfect balance of rich and not overly sweet. Where's the best sandwich café and bakery in all of Douglas County? Not in Roseburg. This gem is tucked away in Umpqua, roughly six and a half miles west of Sutherlin on Fort McKay Road. And the Lighthouse Center Bakery is a vegetarian restaurant to boot! "What? No meat?" you ask, shaking your head. "How can these sandwiches be that good without Genoa salami, roast beef, smoked ham or capicola?" I submit the Veggie Club, which includes oven roasted red bell peppers, Tofurky, Monterey jack, Havarti, provolone, lettuce, tomato, spinach, red onions and creamy Italian herb dressing on fresh bread of the day. The Lighthouse Center Bakery offers several lunch specials, such as the half sandwich-half soup combo and a half-sandwich-half salad combo. I recommend you stick with the Veggie Club and choose the Asian salad, a mix of organic lettuce and greens, cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, mandarin orange and red onion tossed with Toasted Sesame vinaigrette and topped with grilled tofu and toasted almonds. Beware the delicious but dangerous Powerhouse sandwich (homemade guacamole, Havarti, cucumber, spinach and red onion on Honey Wheat Bread). The guacamole is so thick you'll have a challenge eating it without wearing a dab or two. Don't forget this is a bakery. If you can stop for lunch without carrying home a fresh loaf of bread you are a stronger (or stranger) person than I. One last tip to share: come early Sunday morning. Crowds inundate the Lighthouse Center Bakery after church on Sundays. The restaurant is closed on Mondays. The Lighthouse Center Bakery is a must stop. For many years, I've recommended to friends who travel through the area to venture off the interstate. Drive past the fast food restaurants, which bookend Exit 136. My daughter and I stopped in during a community bike ride this afternoon. What a cool place out in the middle of nowhere. :-) I ordered an Americano iced coffee and my daughter had an iced Latte. Both with an extra shot and they were delicious! This is a vegetarian/vegan place so you won't find any meat here. With that being said, we ordered and split the "veggie reuben" sandwich on their homemade rye bread. What a fabulous sandwich, indeed! We both LOVED it! Let me preface this review by saying that neither Rose nor I are vegetarians or vegans, nor do we believe those are particularly healthy diets. However, we've both had vegetarian dishes that were quite good, so when we realized there was no meat on the menu, we had no problem with that. But I didn't know where their business was based. The place was busy...the numbers of cars in the parking lot is what initially clued us in that something was there. There were no signs at all on the highway to let you know there was a restaurant there. The decor was interesting and the staff was polite, but reserved. Rose chose the mushroom burger and I had the Reuben. I asked the gentleman at the counter to explain the vegetarian corned beef (that's just what the menu said)! Of course it was formed soy protein with no real beef, with the pickling spices usually associated with *real* corned beef. The sandwich also had sauerkraut (which was really good) and Swiss cheese which appeared to be real cheese (so I guess it wasn't strictly vegan). It was all on grilled rye. I believe the bread was very good, but it was grilled with lots of oil, so it was hard to tell. Rose said her mushroom burger was good, and a lot like a recipe she had made for us a few months ago. However, the roasted potatoes that came with it were a bit to heavily seasoned for her. If we're ever in that vicinity at lunch time again we might stop in, but I doubt we'll ever make a special trip there. But if you are a serious vegetarian you might want to check it out.
