Rounding up to 4 stars as I realize some folks put a lot of awesome effort into their boats. Never heard of this parade until last week, when I saw it posted on a website. It doesn't seem to be well publicized, considering the low # of Yelp reviews here. Since I'm a sucker for pretty Christmas lights - I decided to check it out. It's one day only and happened to take place 12/3 (starting at 6pm) this year. Looking at the website, about 3 dozen boats were signed up to participate.
The parade takes place at Oakland Inner Harbor - the body of water sandwiched between Alameda and Oakland. I had found out that the SF Bay Ferry also participates and folks can ride the ferry and watch the event from there. I debated between watching from shore or the ferry and decided the ferry would have more of a fun factor.
Notes about the ferry:
-Departs from Alameda Main Street ferry terminal (this year's schedule had the boat departing at 5:15pm and returning at 6:45pm). Free parking at the terminal.
-Admission is $6.60 for adults, $3.30 for youth/seniors/disabled, and free for kids under 5. You can also ride for free if you bring a toy donation. FYI - I noticed they didn't even bother collecting fares, but still, it's good to bring a toy donation.
-Space is first come, first served. I was worried at the size of the line when we arrived a little bit before 5pm, and even more so when the ferry pulled up - it looked so small. However, looks can be deceiving - we all boarded and the ferry seemed to fit everyone. If this event becomes more popular, I would definitely get to the ferry line early.
-There's indoor/outdoor seating, plus tables (great if you want to bring food/snacks). If you forgot drinks/food, there's a small counter area that serves coffee, tea, beer, wine, liquor, soda, and small snacks.
-Yes, there are bathrooms on board.
We take off and head towards Jack London Square and start seeing some of the colorful lighted yachts in the water. I would really recommend checking out the boats at the beginning of the trip as the lighted boats pass you going in the opposite direction. I noticed that during the second half of the trip (as we were headed back to the terminal), we were tailing far behind the other boats. It was difficult to see anything up close since we were behind. However, once the lighted boats started turning back around again and starting to pass us, we were able to catch some better glimpses.
The lighted boats also seemed scattered, so I wouldn't really call it a "parade". It would have been much cooler had they lined up or synchronized themselves, but it was still a neat sight nevertheless. Seeing the lights coming from Jack London Square as well as the other buildings made the evening pretty as well.
As we cruised down the water, a number of people were watching from their own boats at the dock, the shore, or from restaurants that faced the harbor. It was neat to see some of the docked boats lit up and folks cheering at (and from) our ferry. Someone from the ferry crew would periodically try to hype the crowd up and get some holiday jingles going. It would have been nice if they had some holiday music playing throughout the boat.
Overall, it's a neat event for the East Bay - fine way to spend an evening. If you decide to watch it from shore, I'd bring some good company, a chair & blanket, and some hot cocoa. The lighted yacht parade is probably not spectacular enough to stand on it's own - would recommend making an event around it or taking the ferry trip. It could also be fun watching it from one of the shoreline establishments as I saw a number of people do. read more
