"To sit alone in the lamplight with a book spread out before you, and hold intimate converse with men of unseen generations - such is a pleasure beyond compare. " ~Kenko Yoshida I consider myself a voracious reader and have welcomed famous authors in my warm bed, spent many passionate hours with them until it was time to reluctantly let them go at dawn. Well, I was tempted to say, "Ask Garbriel Garcia Marquez, Richard Wright, Sinclair Lewis, Edith Wharton, Isabel Allende (yes, females, too.) John Steinbeck, etc. but you know that I am talking about reading their works. But this review is about Jack London Square in Oakland where the famous Jack London also lived. And I am embarrassed to say that I have not had the pleasure of his company. The closest I've been to was seeing his cabin at Jack London Square. It's been years since I've been at JLS although it was less than 10 minutes away from my house. And I was so surprised to see that JLS square is now a whole area dedicated to new gourmet restaurants, high rises and newly developed lofts. http://static4.px.yelpcdn.com/photo/noNT4u8-UbnRxRkfO7HtVg/l http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wM9ZtkCoboWMt7CHnTOaOQ?select=sBl7Ez01LyXPfHoHfyFbGQ Fiance and I went there for a stroll last beautiful Memorial Day weekend. And I told him I HAD to find Jack London's cabin. I dragged him with urgency and was relieved to find that amidst the modern-day concrete jungle still stands Jack London's cabin right next to the ever present "Last Chance Saloon" where overheated folks were having a glass of beer while taking in the blue water in front of them. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wM9ZtkCoboWMt7CHnTOaOQ?select=9QvRS335UvnM8-H5wG95sw http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wM9ZtkCoboWMt7CHnTOaOQ?select=S_OOvHJ6ptQrOUVeBzPTVg Jack London's cabin is really just a replica of his cabin found in the wilderness decades ago but for as long as I've been visiting Jack London Square, it is always there. Finding this little obscure shack that seems out of place in this urban environment was comforting to me. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wM9ZtkCoboWMt7CHnTOaOQ?select=WmRX-9Gp1Zcmnpu5bvF6qQ http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wM9ZtkCoboWMt7CHnTOaOQ?select=GW_TuMNYlWFJZpVn3PvbZA http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wM9ZtkCoboWMt7CHnTOaOQ?select=wYkA4Z6l4e0l53p7799dRw I have really nothing much more to say about Jack's cabin except I am glad it is still there--a reminder that we should never discard the old and wise even if they seem to have outlived their use. And if you ever visit Jack London's cabin, just take a peek inside and let your imagination run wild. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wM9ZtkCoboWMt7CHnTOaOQ?select=15xwxKiXiUxMMxT4ilw1ag

So this is a statue in jack london square over by Heinhold's Saloon. Formally known as Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon. Also close by is Jack London's (Totally real and not made up! maybe.) cabin. As far as the statue goes-it's a wolf sure enough. Slightly larger then life and children find it impossible not to climb on. It commemorates a wonderful jack london book/character titled "White Fang". Nothing too remarkable so far. However, as I said, it's by Heinhold's which is a pretty interesting place. And the totally not made up for tourists Jack London Cabin. To be fair the cabin is typical of what people lived in back during the westward expansion, even if there is a chance that Jack London did not in point of fact live in it. There is a nice fountain which may or may not have water in it depending on the drought politics in Oakland at the moment you visit, and there is a nice little seating area/park. The palm tree's in the little park area are lit up with string lights at night. You can watch boats go by. It's a pretty mellow spot to hang out at. It's a great spot to picnic at, grab a drinkypoo from Hienhold's and people watch. If you got kids, take a pic of them climbing the wolf, and lecture them about american literature and history. Then get them a sweet from the french bakery on the other side of the park and chill out for a while.

The museum has three floors and their outdoor garden overlooking lake merrit. They have a little bit of everything, if you're curious about real history and wanting to learn more this is the place. Their annual membership is so worth. As they have several special events. Next to the museum they have plenty of parking. I take Bart as the stop is one block away. Chinatown is walkable for great restaurants. The Oakland library is close by too! There's a restaurant inside the museum while the food sounds great it's okay. I would recommend walking /driving to Chinatown or downtown Oakland for amazing food.

We came on a Saturday afternoon, easy parking in the garage. There is a lot to see here, it focuses on California and the Bay Area!! There are 3 floors here, each floor with a vast array of art, history, and science. You're never too old to learn something new, a lot of things here caught my attention for real. There is also a garden and lawn area along with a restaurant here, so it's really easy to spend most of the day here. I'm always interested in history, so that was my favorite part here, but everything here was great. And I probably need a few more visits to actually take in everything that this museum has to offer!!

The piece was inspired by Gertrude Stein's quote "There is no there there", referring to her childhood home, despite her words being interpreted in different ways. The artist, Roslyn Mazzilli, spent decades creating sculptures that reflect aspects of nature and add vibrant color to the various settings in which her public artworks are displayed. "There!" is seemingly ageless and certainly an attractive centerpiece among the surrounding shops and eateries at the City Center, and a prime representation of Mazzilli's work.

I'd been here many times before and even sat around the fountain but never paid attention to the name of the sculpture nor it's creator until my last visit. Thanks to yelp, I learned something new once again. Now I know that this sculpture is knows as There!, created by sculptor Roselyn Mazzilli. Upon closer look, I saw the nameplate for the first time including the date of installation which is 1988. The entire plaza is a nice place to hang around with lots of restaurants providing outside seating around the sculpture and the fountain. Due to severe drought in California, the fountain is currently off but the sculpture is still a beauty to behold.

I have never met Mr. Hennen, but I was always impressed with his photos titled Mood City posted on that website in one of the groups I belong to. His main focus were the urban areas of Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco, which brought back memories of growing up in the area. I love his work, especially the ones of Oakland Chinatown and West Oakland. The Joyce Gordon Gallery is a well lit gallery in the downtown area of Oakland. The ambiance is a comfortable one without being pretentious. What an amazing gallery to have works of the African American artists on display. Indeed this gallery and Sanchez Contemporary (Uptown) are welcome sites to the City of Oakland. I usually don't head back to Oakland in the evening, but Mood City beckoned my husband and me to attend this event and to show support to a Facebook friend. The presentation of the photos was beautiful. I finally met Mr. Hennen through another Facebook friend, Vanessa Williams, who was also at the event. Much appreciation to this gentleman who was very pleasant and engaging in conversation with everybody attending this event. The minor drawback to this gallery is trying to find street parking in the area. Public transportation (AC or BART) is easier than driving around the block or blocks in search of a parking space. Then there is also a parking garage close by. When in the area, stop by this gallery and admire the works on display of local artists.

They have some nice artworks of black and African or African diaspora people on display right now. I came to the gallery as a part of an evening event in BlackSolidarityWeek and I appreciate that they allow this space to be used for such events and talks. It seems there's a lower level that requires stairs to access, did not get to see what was in there at the time.
