    Sunset

Been hanging out here for years. Fishing is enjoyable as the pier is quite long and the comradery among fishermen is present. Halibut, Stingrays, and Rock Crab can be caught here. With the Bay Area breeze against your directional view, you just can't help to notice it's also 420 friendly just like the city in its entirety. Absolutely perfect to enjoy the sunset. It's my short getaway.

    Foggy morning on the pier

I have visions of bundling up and walking alone on the pier in the early morning fog with salt air blowing on my face. Of course, that will never happen it would be to cold. I walk here when it is nice. And enjoy sunsets from my warm car parked along the waterfront. On clear days there are great views of the Golden Gate, the Bay Bridge and San Francisco. Fishermen line the sides of the pier. It is possible to land different fish, although I never see too many people pulling anything in. They are there because according to the fish reports the pier is a good place to fish. As an added bonus you don't need a license to throw in your line. People do try there are always people out there trying to bring home a fish or a crab. When the pier opened it extended 3.5 miles towards San Francisco, today its 2.5 miles. It is possible to walk 3000 feet on the uneven pavement and look at the remains of the old pier. It is a rickety icon of life along the shoreline

Peaceful place to relax and disconnect from the world. Would of loved to explore more of this park. Didn't under stand how it was a national state park is looking like its kinda being led towards neglecting. Notices a lot of homeless people setting up tents right along side the entrance of this place. Definitely needs a bit TLC. But for the most part it was very delightful. There were still people out exercising and going along their business without a care. Wonder how this placed looked like 20 years ago. Nevertheless tho, it was very peaceful and tranquil. The water was beautiful. People were partly sailing and stuff in the water. Don't know about jumping in there. Probably if it were super hot I'd take a dive. I don't know, it just seems like all the water in northern Cali is just plain cold.

I've been visiting the Berkeley Pier since I was a child. Since I no longer live in Oakland, I don't get to visit as frequently as I'd like. I'm hoping that will change in the near future. Although parking can sometimes suck balls, the scenery here is beautiful and well worth it!

I've heard this location is closed but it was really a Bay Area gem. They had free parking close to the location and a great pier for fishing and crabbing. There's often local food vendors if you don't want to dine fancy at the restaurant. They have great wind caves that you can fish from and place your chairs when it gets cold. A lot of people use these as a restroom however, because the bathrooms are only at the beginning and end of a long pier. While some can really smell, they are a welcome protection from the cold winds. The people here are also very friendly and there is a lot of families fishing and grilling their catch. When you bring ladies here, the stalls for the bathrooms have no doors and they don't like that- but as a "door guard" asking people to wait(because your girlfriend is pee shy) they totally understand and take shifts for each other. They have great fish cleaning stations throughout the pier. There's a really chill vibe with beer and 420 everywhere, I really hope this pier opens again soon

Quarter mile long pier with the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.

Spring Break 2015 in CA...This pier is a beautiful place to fish. The pier is located on the edge of Berkeley Marina...at least if you are a boat. If you come in from the land side it is at the far end. Either way there are lots of fishermen and women here and couples walking the pier. Originally the pier extended out some three miles into San Francisco Bay...then it was shortened to just over two miles, and now only the first half mile or so is useable. If you walk the half mile out to the end you hit a wall and can see the pier's support beams extending out much farther into the bay. But since they have no platform on top, you cannot walk it. All to say the pier is much shorter than before, but still a great walk. The views are wonderful as you can see the Golden Gate Bridge (in fact you can see all three bay bridges on a clear day) and the skyline of San Francisco...just beautiful. Sunrise and sunset are exceptional, and you can watch fog roll in from the Pacific Ocean at times. If you are in the area do give this site a try.

The pier stretches out into the western horizon, rewarding visitors with devastatingly gorgeous views of the Golden Gate, Bay Bridge and the city, particularly during sunset. Fan of the fishies? Well, grab that rod! No piece of paper stands between your hook and a gaping pesca-mouth; as the half mile stretch is public, licenses aren't required, and on bright days you'll find it quite the bustling place for strollers and fishing folk alike. There's plenty of parking, and it's a super easy jaunt off the Bay Trail. If you do partake in the bait and hook, just be sure to dispose of your catch properly as to not add to the splendiferous odor that never really leaves no matter how gusty it be. Bring along a warm layer, the wind can be bitingly cold. There's no shortage of characters: the lone gaucho in full regalia, teenage boys casting their nets, a pair of buddies in forest camo rooted to their collapsible camping chairs with the footrests and built-in can holders using "fishing" as an excuse to their wives to sit around and shoot the shit and drink beer. Every once in a while, the #5 bus deposits a gaggle of gussied up high school kids, multi-generational families and amorous pairs to share in the sunshine. Sunday afternoon paradise.

A 2 hour slow sundial. Bring a watch.

Its a pier..and you gaze beyond and there is it.. tadaaaa...the Golden Gate Bridge... but if you are on the GG Bridge.. you cannot see the pier. Funny how things work. Lots of seagulls, boats, squirrels and raccoons at night. Super scenic!!!! Great place to bring your visitors if you don't have to the time to take them to SF... you can say.. "See.. .there is SF..now lets go visit 4th street where there is actual parking."

    Peter N.

Some history here; it used to extend way out, as part of the ferry service to SF. The pier is ok, it's got some great views, but it's not that exciting after a couple of visits. The rest of the marina is where the action is at. For an exhilarating bathroom experience, try using the public toilets on the pier - the wind can whip up around your backside. But definitely worth a walk out once if you're at the marina.

I have been coming here for years. When my brother and I were young, our mother use to bring us to the "wood park". There you can climb on different play stuctures made from wood. You could paint wood items as well. At the end there is the beautiful view of the Berkeley marnia. You can walk along the long pier while looking over to the bridge.

Alright all my east bay yelpers, this is the SPOT! I go here maybe twice a month just to walk the pier and watch the guys fish. I even saw a few guys crabbing! A great place to just chill and enjoy the view or drink a tall can and watch the sun set. I think the pier has to be one of the longest around but when you get to the end you feel like you have accomplished a spin class or a hour of zumba! The guy at the beginning with the snack bar is cool! Dogs are welcomed, 420 friendly and parking is easy. This is a great location to just stop by to view and get a taste of mother nature and the big blue ocean.

Of all the piers in the Bay Area this is by far the best one it goes out into the bay over a half mile well lit at night parking is perfect right at the base of the pier and just a straight walk to the end I come here for fishing and for crabbing mostly it's open 24 hours a day 7 days a week and the people there seem to be very friendly PS- you don't need a fishing license for California piers " saltwater" squid seems to be the bait of choice

Berkeley pier is a nice little spot away from your chaotic day. Right by the ocean and fisherman. You can stroll along the pier for about a mile and just admire the scenery. Unfortunately they closed it off recently, but it's still a nice place to walk around.

If you time your visit right, you can maybe catch one of the music performances. After we'd enjoyed the view for about 15 minutes, we took the elevator back down. I'd highly recommend a trip to the Campanile - it's the second tallest free-standing clock tower in the world!

But over time, it just became another part of campus, like Strawberry Creek and its weird bridges or McCone Hall or the national-championship statutes and their prissy little bench--still super weird and quirky, but not unusual anymore. Then sometime in 2008 or 2009, they removed the metal-arch part of the gate in order to restore it, and it was quietly devastating to me. Even though I normally walked straight from the Downtown Berkeley BART Station and up the hill to Wheeler Hall and back, I found myself detouring through the temporarily denuded Sather Gate down into Sproul Plaza and crisscrossing back along Strawberry Creek. I kept doing this, and then one day, it was back! It made me so happy, and while I continued to walk the most direct way to Wheeler, I often reversed my roundabout route so that I walked from BART to Sproul Plaza and then through Sather Gate. It used to be the formal entrance to campus from the south side, back when campus largely ended (or began) at Strawberry Creek. Now, it feels stuck in time. Dated, yes, but also no longer a demarcation line between the university and the rest of Berkeley. That's probably appropriate. I've seen all kinds of fascinating uses of the physical gate itself for protests and protest-adjacent performance and participatory art. I also think it's weird that different campus clubs use chains to affix their club signs to the posts of the handrails along the bridge. I realize that if they weren't chained, people would steal them and/or throw them into the creek, but I always wondered how those particular eight or so organizations got to chain their signs here. Was it first come, first served? Did it rotate? It might still go on, but I haven't worked on campus in more than a decade, so I don't seen my old patinaed friend that often anymore. And remember, even if you'd rather be at Sather, a bather belongs at Sather, because Sather rhymes with "bather," not "rather."
