I am terrified of dentists, having had a couple from Little Shop of Horrors wreak havoc in my mouth a few decades ago, I avoid them like the plague. I finally was in enough pain that I decided it was equal to the pain a dentist could inflict so I may as well get the problem cut out. Dr Amy came up with a game plan to save my teeth, and I had my first double root canal and crowns. Here is where it gets interesting: No pain. Zip, zilch, zero, nada. And my crowns fit PERFECTLY! We also ran into a series of unfortunate events, mixups, inaccuracies, and fiascos with our insurance, but the staff (Bacardi, the insurance whisperer, is amazing!) did a great job fixing the snafus. For that reason, I feel it is important to share my experience and the concerns I have about the referral process. I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the referral process and my experience during my recent periodontal consultation. During my exam and cleaning, I discussed my concern regarding an open embrasure (black triangle) with my dentist. Based on that conversation, I was referred to a periodontist to discuss a gum graft as a possible solution. I scheduled the appointment and took time out of my day because I trusted that this referral was appropriate for my condition. At the consultation, the periodontist briefly examined the area, asked what my primary concern was, and after I explained that it was the embrasure, immediately stated that a gum graft would not correct an embrasure. He then said the general dentist would need to discuss restorative options such as a veneer or crown instead. After the appointment, I was told I owed a consultation fee. I questioned why I was being charged for a consultation regarding a treatment that the specialist immediately determined would not address my concern. I was then told the consultation was also intended to determine whether I was a candidate for a veneer or crown. That explanation does not align with the reason I was given for the referral. I was referred specifically to discuss a gum graft-not to obtain clearance for a veneer or crown. My concern is not that specialists charge consultation fees. My concern is that I was referred for a treatment that the specialist determined almost immediately was not an appropriate option for the condition I was referred to discuss. This resulted in an unnecessary appointment, wasted time, and an attempt to charge me for a consultation that, in my opinion, should never have been necessary if the appropriate evaluation had been completed before the referral. For that reason, I declined to pay the consultation fee. I don't believe that I should be financially responsible for a referral that appears to have been inappropriate from the outset. I am requesting a clear explanation as to why I was referred for a gum graft consultation when the specialist determined almost immediately that a gum graft would not resolve my primary concern. I also ask that your office review the referral process to help prevent other patients from experiencing the same situation.

I was told that insurance would be verified and that they would submit everything for a coverage estimate prior to treatment. After my exam and X-rays, I was informed that I had periodontal disease and would need scaling and root planing. I was also told I had approximately nine cavities and was strongly encouraged to proceed with laser treatment that was not covered by insurance. At no point did I feel I was given clear, conservative options or a breakdown of urgency versus elective procedures. The initial visit resulted in a $200 charge, and I was quoted approximately $800 for the recommended deep cleaning. Because the diagnosis felt significant, I sought a second opinion as I've never had periodontal issues and receive regular cleanings (I worked in the dental industry for years). At another dental office, I was told that I do not have periodontal disease and do not need scaling and root planning cleanings. Their review of my X-rays showed no signs supporting that diagnosis, aside from two isolated pockets near areas where my wisdom teeth had previously been extracted. Then was informed I have two areas on my molars that needed very small fillings on the occlusal areas. They were shocked my Mason Dentals treatment plan! Based on this second opinion, I'm concerned about the difference in diagnoses and the treatment plan I was given. I would recommend getting a second opinion before proceeding with Mason Dental.

I absolutely HATE going to the dentist, so I had incredible anxiety about going, but the staff and Dr. B were so nice and welcoming. He answered every question I had (I had tons of questions). I was able to get a temporary crown and meds to help my pain for a couple of days, and then I came back to the office to get my permanent crown on Thursday. I love that this office is able to make your crown within the same day. Dr. B was extremely gentle with numbing my mouth, he walked me through everything that he was doing, and his staff was the exact same way, kind, gentle & patient.
