I'd like to start by saying, I do my best to always give people the benefit of the doubt. People…read moreare busy, people have a million things going on that I will never know about- and for those reasons alone, I try not to judge too harshly. This is my first negative yelp review, and I honestly hate that I feel a need to write it. I've also had quite a bit experience with PT in my past. I've played soccer since I could walk and ended my career after several injuries while playing D1 soccer in college. I've had 3 knee surgeries, a broken foot, a broken nose, and there are probably other injuries I am forgetting. I have been around the PT block a time or two, and have had many teammates who have as well. I'm writing this review for those who haven't, who are new to PT and don't have anything to compare it to. When considering Shulman and Associates, I think there is better out there. Today, I arrived at 1:15 for my 1:30 appointment pertaining to TMJ symptoms that have lingered from an old soccer injury. I filled out my paperwork by 1:25, and then was told by the (extremely kind and nice) receptionist that David had just gone into a meeting. I thought this was odd because my appointment was supposed to just be starting, but thought it maybe was a scheduling mix-up. As someone who usually runs 15 minutes late to everything in her life, I understand crazy schedules. I waited for about 20 minutes until David came out and introduced himself. I walked back to the treatment room and sat down, but then waited another 5 minutes because he went somewhere. He came back and asked me several questions about my symptoms, showed me that I have a thrusting tongue, and then disappeared for another 5 minutes while I heard him talking to co-workers about updating computers or buying new software. Then came back to give me a sheet of paper depicting how TMJ symptoms manifest depending on where points of tension are, but then he disappeared again for a few minutes. He eventually came back to massage my jaw muscles and warm them up, and then moved on the setting up ultrasound in which we begin to talk about injuries and sports. He proceeds to tell me that Title IX is the worst thing to ever happen to women, that our bodies are not made for sports and cutting and moving, and that we should "stick to running". He then leaves for another 10 minutes while I sit with an ultrasound pad on my face with almost zero current coming through. Now, if that's your medical opinion about Title IX, fine. I know women are more prone to knee injuries especially due to our wider set hips. I know a lot of women athletes who have endured countless injuries, me being one of them. However, 1) I am not paying you for an unwarranted lecture 2) as a PT is a healthcare professional, I would've hoped for a more professional discourse that also doesn't make me feel extremely uncomfortable 3) you're telling a new patient, who is a woman and has played sports her entire life and is coming to you for a sports-related injury, that women shouldn't play sports? Maybe I have been extremely lucky to have had PTs in the past who work to strengthen women's bodies in order to prevent injuries. But I don't think it's been luck, I think that is the norm (or should be). Insulting comments aside- Shulman did not offer any insight into how he would help my TMJ symptoms, nor gave me time to ask any questions because he spent very little time with me throughout the appoinment. He did say that my jaw/tongue muscles are tense and I should heat them with a heating pad, and also get a night guard- I don't mean to be rude, but google told me that too. I must say that the two women who worked at the receptionists' desk were absolutely amazing, they were kind, funny, and accommodating to me only having pictures of insurance cards. I don't want to take away what Shulman and Associates has done for other patients, I am truly happy some people have found relief from their help. However, I hope my experience helps others who are considering spending their time/money on Shulman and Associate to evaluate all of their options.

I really want to give this practice a higher rating, I do. But I just can't. Even the two-star is…read moremore for their front desk and ease of scheduling than the actual therapy. I went here for David Shulman's expertise in TMJ treatment, but after two sessions, I can't say I'm impressed. My sessions consisted of electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and massage. There is an additional charge for the e-stim electrode pads which, okay, fine, but one of the pads was faulty - I could barely feel anything on the right jaw muscles, despite turning up the knob settings to the highest it could go. When I brought this up to David Shulman, he insisted that "that's okay" and did not rectify the issue. Ultrasound was also an indifferent affair. First off, let me state that while I've had sessions before where the therapist left the e-stim equipment with the patient to operate while they did other things, I've NEVER encountered a therapist who leaves the ultrasound equipment just lying by the patient to operate by itself while he treats other patients. The therapist should be holding the ultrasound handle over the treatment area while monitoring patient response at all times. That's been the case when I had ultrasound for rotator cuff issues, and that certainly should be the case for a sensitive area like the TMJ. As for the massage portion of treatment, there was some rubbing over the anterior masseter muscles, and I had to repeated prompt him to massage further in the back where the muscles are sorest. Even then, the experience was cursory. There was no trigger point or intraoral massage, which would have been a lot more effective. I drove an hour each way from Gaithersburg to get to his practice in Towson, and I paid out of pocket - that's how much I wanted to get treatment for my TMJ issues and for this arrangement to work. Even when the first session was unsatisfactory, I gave it another try, trying to rationalize away the lack of care and attention I found with the treatment process. Unfortunately, fool me twice, shame on me - I think I'll have to cut my losses and continue looking.

He took 45 minutes of the first one hour initial appointment evaluating me then readjusting me and reevaluating! He was compassionate and extremely knowledgeable and his techniques were very effective! As I am a golfer, he personalized the majority of my stretches to the golf swing and gave me a daily routine which accelerated my progress ! After just three visits, I was able to swing a golf club again! My therapy with Josh is over but I feel equipped to stay a step ahead of any future injuries thanks to the knowledge he imparted to me! I highly recommend Josh if you want a most effective yet efficient resolution to an injury!

Honestly, the very first time I called to make an appointment I was impressed- not sure who I talked to, but she was absurdly nice (unusual for many doctors office receptionists I've dealt with), and SUPER flexible working to try to find appointments to fit my busy work schedule. I can't say enough about the awesome people here, and bonus- my headaches are far less frequent now!

My left arm had shooting pain from the pinched nerves and I lost feeling in 3 of my fingers. I couldn't lay or sit and paced my house for 23 hours occasionally resting in the corners of my living room. After 7 days, 2 "passing-out's" from the pain, 4 ER trips (1 by Ambulance) and 4 dismissive "Doctors" who told me to go home and "relax," (1 prescribed 6 Valiums and a 5 day treatment of steroids) my neighbor found me collapsed on my front porch. He recommended seeking help from Dr. Rob. On the first visit I came ready to do battle thinking I had to convince yet another person of my level of pain, but he simply let me tell my story uninterrupted for 40 minutes and said "I understand." Those 2 words changed my life. Within 4 sessions the swelling has reduced, the pain is now occasional, I am able to lift my head and have regained feeling in 2 of my fingers. He used a combination of dry needling and myofascial release and taught me how to breathe. His home exercises have meaning and he explains everything. He was the first person to listen with the intent to understand, help and cure. I am continuing treatment and each session produces extraordinary results. He is a healer.

I called them after a search of yelp reviews and they were able to get me in right away. They "threw the kitchen sink at me" and within a week I was able to move with freedom and carry most objects with a moderate level of discomfort. By the end of the following week, my pain was pretty much gone, and by the week after I was back on track with my workouts and job demands. The office is clean, professional, kind, and incredibly productive! My insurance has a bit of a high deductible, so I eventually had to cut back on the extra treatments being suggested/offered. But the adjustments were always spot on, regardless of which provider I was seeing. Fast-forward two years later and an ongoing neck issue (that I have been ignoring) has begun to cause constant headaches and migraines. I called them and they offered an appointment within an hour of my call! Due to my schedule conflicts, I had an appointment to see them two days later with a wicked migraine. Astonishingly I left much better after a session of dry needling, ultrasound treatment, and possibly the best adjustment i have ever had! By the time I took 800mg of ibuprofen, I felt like new. I know it'll take a few visits to get this resolved, but I have faith they will improve this issue very soon!
