So tonight I shopped at both Lidl & Food Lion, and scored big by shopping at Lidl first. I love Lidl for many reasons, one like stores their prices are compared too, you don't have to have a quarter for a cart (because who really remembers that every time they go to get a cart), but you do have to pay for bags if you don't bring your own, or just have a bunch of groceries sitting in your car. They have great produce, and you're not always limited to buying a bag full of an item, when you really only need 2. They have more variety and lots of name brands at better prices. I hadn't been in awhile and was shocked to see Land O Lakes cheese, Frito Lay Brand snacks, Coke products to name a few brands. You definitely save money here. Plus they have an app which has all the goodies and coupons. They have all the meat, cheeses, selection of refrigerated pastas (to name a few)that you would think it's a specialty. Oh and in another review I mentioned how mouth watering their bakery is. I'll definitely drive the extra mile to go to Lidl. read more

I visited a Lidl back when I was on a trip in Germany. It was exciting to see that NC had one. The store is definitely not what I remembered back in Europe and it had mostly US-made products. We were kind of expecting more of a European grocery store. It turned out to be quite random. You can buy hummus on one side and turn around and buy a trampoline. The prices are decent so there's no issue there. It's just not what I remembered Lidl to be. The flow of the aisles were confusing, too. If I had to describe it, it's like a marketplace version of Costco. I do want to visit again during day hours because their bakery section looked like it would be great. Unfortunately, I visited around 7:30pm and most of the bakery items were gone. read more

If you've never been to one of these grocery stores do yourself a solid and next time you go past one, stop and actually go inside. Everything from the customer service, to the actual ambience of the grocery store is next level. We love the pricing schedule. They have such awesomely price goods that you just want to buy everything. We love the location and wait for us as it's not too far from where we live however the staff there make that place the best. We fell in love with Miss Christie and she was so awesome and easy to work with. She makes great suggestions and always has a killer smile every time we come in. The place is okay, but nothing more. I go there for the discounted meats more than anything, the weekend sales are a draw, but i find it disappointing to go there, be the first one in the door the day the sale starts and be told "Sorry, we didn't get the [insert specific item] we advertised for the weekend sale." Well, they got me in the door, only to have me leave frustrated for wasting my time, energy and resources to make the trip there to buy something they didn't even get in. Is it their fault? Probably not - it's probably a distributor somewhere making a decision of which stores specific items go to. read more

Very clean (brand new, no surprise here). Love that Lidl offers fresh baked goods, right as you enter store. Store was packed and a bit hard to navigate due to time I was there - around 5:30 on a weeknight. Figured a lot of after work customers. I'll give Lidl another try early in morning on a weekday. Bought milk, some baked goods, ice cream, yogurt and school supplies for under $16. Only frustration was the Lidl weekly ad prompted my visit - I saw something in ad that I wanted to buy. After arriving at Lidl, not finding item on my own, asked THREE employees where item was. Two had no idea what I was talking about - showed both the ad that is current, and they were clueless. Third employee kept steering me to a different similarly named product, but was nowhere near what was in the ad... Wish employees were more familiar with the weekly ad - item I went in for was a special item - so, well featured in ad. Bummer. Checkout was fast, despite store being very busy. Employee at checkout very friendly. I'll visit again, but certainly will keep Aldi in my rotation. read more

I was so excited about this store opening, but it was so crowded on opening day I couldn't get into the parking lot, let alone the store. I returned recently and was happy to see it was easy to get in and out now. I'm used to shopping at Aldi's, which I really like, so was curious how Lidl would compare. First off the aisles are very wide so it's much easier to maneuver through than Aldi's. There's no quarter deposit on the shopping carts, but you still have to bag your own groceries. The cashiers are more laid back and take their time chatting with customers, unlike Aldi which keeps things moving at a brisk pace. They have an actual bakery onsite and an extensive fresh meat and seafood/fish department. Also a wide selection in the diary, cold food and frozen food areas. In the canned and dry goods aisle there's a good variety too, as well as household necessities like cleaning and paper products. There's also home and personal needs like tools, dishes, clothes, etc. Their weekly special items are much less of a variety than Aldi's it seems, but I could be wrong from just one visit. Like Aldi, the pricing is very good on everything and they seem to have more name brands, which doesn't sway me one way or the other. All that said, to my surprise I still like Aldi better. If a Lidl location comes to the south Durham area I'd have a better chance of visiting more often to see if they could win me over, but for now Wake Forest is much too far a trek for me to make just for one store so I'm happy with the nearby Aldi. read more

Have been here a couple of times now and I feel I can now give a fair review. Lidl has driven the price of milk down at the local WalMart. The Wake Forest WalMart has milk for $1.55 a gallon which matches Lidl's price. If you go to the WalMart near The Triangle Mall the milk costs $2.75 a gallon. Lidl is responsible for this. The bakery items at Lidl are fresh and delicious. The prices here are excellent. The choices are not as varied as Harris Teeter or Food Lion but you can find a lot of things that you need, but maybe not everything. I used to not like the store as much as the lines were always long to check out, they never seemed to have more than 2 registers open. They have now added 4 self check out stands which make checking out so much easier. Remember to bring your own bags or you you can purchase bags there. read more

When we were in Wake Forest on a Saturday afternoon and drove by Lidl, we just had to go in! It was very crowded, and they could have used more people at the registers, but overall, we like this store. Fresh produce is the first thing you see when you enter, and the amazing bakery is next. There are lots of cheeses and packaged meats, followed by some fresh meat and chicken, canned goods, dairy products, frozen foods and beer and wine. There's even a section in the middle with non-food items, including some tools, toys and small appliances. The store is similar to Aldi, because it has basic items and decent prices. It's bigger, though, and very clean. You don't have to rent a grocery cart, but be sure to bring your own bags. Some prices are comparable to those at Food Lion, and a lot of their prices are even lower. It all depends on what you want to buy. There are a few organic items, but I didn't see many. All in all, I don't think Lidl is worth a special trip, but if I'm in the area, I'll definitely stop by. read more

Good experience while shopping there. The store in Wake Forest is not too large. They have all of the basic groceries as well as other things that are normally found at department stores such as clothing and housewares. Lidl's store and Aldi's are similar in layout and having a more limited amount of brands for items. Most of the items are their house brand. The fruit and veggies are pretty good quality and they have some organically grown ones too. The fresh baked items are pretty good and they are made every two hours. The store layout is a little cramped once you get to the non-food items, as I think they are trying to put a lot of products in a small area. The beef and chicken are of a similar quality that you would get at other local chain grocery stores, for a similar or slightly lower cost. Overall, prices are lower than places such as Harris Teeter, Publix and even Walmart (on some items). The store's layout makes it easy to find items fast and then be on your way. Checkout is generally fast. You can purchase grocery bags at the checkout or bring your own to save a few pennies. Overall good experience, feels like a neighborhood store more so than Target or Walmart. The quality of the dairy, beef,chicken and vegetables are good and make a nice alternative to other grocery stores at usually lower cost. read more

Lidl takes me back to my Heimat. This store recently opened in Wake Forest on S Main Street. The bakery goods are on the left as you enter the store. There are pretzels, donuts, muffins and German breads. My favorite part is the bread slicer and you easily follow the 4 steps to slice your fresh bread. Lidl has the finest meats, cheeses, oils, and international treasures from all over. I love the Italian week called Italiamo and found pesto, noodles and even pizza plates. Lidl offers an app to clip coupons yet o have found that most items are already on sale and marked down. The fruits and vegetables are fresh and very economical. If you like Aldi you'll love Lidl. It's newer, clean and has the bonus of a fresh bakery, wine selection and flowers. Now, if you think it will compare to TJs or Whole Foods, HT or the like you would be incorrect. This is a discount grocer. I'm not a huge fan of this type of shop. I went to see what they offered in organic products based on location and convenience. Out of everything I saw the only discount for me is the organic almond milk. Their price is better than any store yet. Other than that all other organic products I saw are the same price as name brands I already love. I would pop in for a German pretzel from the bakery (I've only seen them on a Sunday so far) or for almond milk but this would not be a major player in my grocery game. You should stop in to see if it fits for you. It's really a lovely store and the staff are incredibly nice. Helpful tips: Just past the bakery there is a little window where they have a daily food sample. They have mini carts for your little shoppers in training. In the foyer there seem to be a couple of wheel chairs for those who need assistance Bring your own bags! Or you'll need to buy them. There is no quarter charge for a cart. read more

Lidl stores have become more popular in the area recently so I decided to try one out when I had the chance. Much like Aldi's, they focus on a less extensive selection in exchange for lower prices. Unlike the Aldi's I have been in, there was a bakery area in the front to tempt you even before you got to your shopping proper, ha ha! What can I say? The selection was adequate, prices were good and there were numerous random non-food items on sale. I'm not sure the business model behind it but given how popular the stores are, it must be working for them. Originally, I was going to give them four stars but I had to bump it down to three a month after I started the review. Why's that? Well, the candle lighter I had purchased there to keep for emergencies (there was a hurricane coming toward us when I went there!) totally failed to work. Sure, it was on a really good sale, but it failed to even work once? Fortunately, we didn't need to use it, but it would have been bad if we had needed it. So, for now, I'm giving Aldi's a tentative thumbs up but watch out for sales and check what you buy. (P.S. They had plenty of water when most places were out just before the storm.) read more

German owned discount grocery store. First thing I noticed was the cleanliness and reminded me of a small scale Costco. They not only carry groceries but lots of changeable items from kitchen gadgets, clothes, tools, toys, small appliances and small furniture items. They did have organic produce, but they don't carry everything. Wine and beer too. Did find great pricing on fruits and veggies and things like milk and eggs. Bring your own bags or pay for theirs. Not a place I would shop regularly, since they don't carry everything but fun to peruse different items. They have their own branding for cost saving. read more

The stocker/manager in this store had an attitude about our children pushing their children's carts around. He rolled his eyes at my baby and then told my baby to tone it down. They should not have these children's carts in the store if the employees are going to have an attitude about kids pushing them around. I spoke with another employee about it and that person said he is like that with all children. Then I headed down the cheese isle, they have everything from string cheese to 5 different kinds of goat cheese & everything in between! I wandered all the isles, they have a little of his & that plus all the essentials. They have wine to diapers & mix in some necessary kitchen items like rolling pins filled with cookie cutters! The cost for a large sugar cookie was 44 cents and I got like 5 of them. Lidl is basically like a really cheap harris teeter. I just got the email to take a survey for the 1 year anniversary of the opening of the Lidl in Wake Forest & realized that I had not reviewed them despite having sung their praises to everyone & anyone who would listen from the day they opened. I love this store, large, clean spacious, well stocked (most of the time, it can look a bit decimated in bakery & produce if you come close to closing time). The price & quality of their produce is amazing. I have bought, peppers, onions, mushrooms, squash, zucchini, blackberries, strawberries, apples, bananas, pineapple & even a basil plant & every thing has been great & inexpensive. I also love their meats. Just like any other store you gotta look for the sales but hey, boneless skinless chicken at $1.69 lb, boneless skinless chicken thighs at $1.99 lb, whole chicken wings at $1.29 lb, ground turkey at $2.00 lb, (we eat a lot of poultry, lol) a whole spiral ham for 0.49 a lb, Yes, please ! The boneless skinless chicken breasts are great, they are much cleaner than the ones that you buy at Teeter from the meat counter, I don't feel like I need to spend 20 minutes re-butchering them to get all the fat & gristle off & I don't feel like I spent 20% of what I paid on inedible scraps that I am going to toss out (sorry Teeter but they soooo have you beat on this one). I don't think we have tried any red meats from Lidl but I have been so tempted when they have had lamb on sale, oh so tempted ! The bakery is great, especially the croissants ! They are actual french style butter croissants, light flaky, airy, layered deliciousness ! The vanilla chocolate swirl pastries & the apple fritters are very good also. On the savory side I have really enjoyed the mini vegetable quiches. The best thing about the bakery though is the bread. Authentic European style bread ! The German bread, especially the walnut bread is amazing. My parents spent 6 years in Germany & when my mom comes to visit she hits Lidl & stocks up on the bread (& wine but that's another story) to take home to Maryland. One of the things that I find really fun about Lidl is that having had relatives stationed in Germany for so long, I walk through & can find & see different items that I saw in Europe that I loved but never could find here. The candy aisle is the most dangerous ! If you haven't tried the Belonna (blue & white package,5 to a pack, $1.99) you def should. They are the closest thing I have found here to a Kinder "Hippo" but 1 little pack of 2 tiny "Hippos"at Teeter is 5 bucks ! I saw the low score, review, & comments by someone who said they couldn't find anything vegetarian in the store. I will agree that I haven't seen a specific "vegetarian section" but there are items all over the store that don't contain meat. I have bought their veggie lasagna & it is great, I have had their tarte flambe (french style pizza) that had no meat & it was great. I use several of their Indian sauces that are meet free (a lot of Indians are vegetarian). There are fresh nuts, grains, tons of rice & pasta. Maybe this person was vegan ? Or maybe they were just searching for pre packaged Morning Star Farms / Boca type products ? I just wanted to mention that I don't think this store is anti/un vegetarian friendly, I was vegetarian for 14 years & my daughter is vegetarian & I have found plenty to eat/buy here that would have worked in that type of diet. Since Lidl came to town, they have easily become one of my go to grocers. When people ask me, I say it is a nicer Aldi. They have the same bring your own bag concept as Aldi. They have weekly specials and their pricing is always so great. They often have sales on their meats which is great because I can stock up and freeze for later use. A lot of their grocery items are non-name brand but the ones that I've had have always been good. They do also carry name brand items as well but the pricing on those isn't always the best. They stay busy but the cashiers are diligent on ensure they get customers through swiftly. They do have a self-checkout lane which is good for when I only have a few items in hand and the self-checkout usually never full. read more

I loved Lidl when they first opened in Wake Forest. Great concept for a store with specials going on and, once they were opened for awhile, items dropping to 30% off because they were going out of date (think great cheeses). Over a bit of time, I've started shopping there very carefully because I'm constantly charged full price for items that are supposed to be on sale. The latest happened to me just today when some lovely Italiano items had a big sign in front of them saying they were 2 for $3. We took two up to the register with thoughts of turning them into Venezia-style tramezzi. They rang up at 1.99 each. No, adding a dollar onto our bill wasn't going to break the bank but it's not an isolated incident. This happened at the Wake Forest Rd. store. Less than a week ago we were charged 4.99 for an item at the store in Wake Forest that was advertised (and under a big sign that confirmed the price) at 2.99. These examples are not rare but, more and more, the norm. It pays to check prices before you go and especially to compare them to Aldi. The two shops are within kilometers of each other in Wake Forest and it's easy to hit them both in one shopping experience. Aldi seems to be very aware of the Lidl prices and has been dropping some prices to well below Lidl. I have no loyalty to either store and go where the same thing costs less. Aldi staff isn't exactly stellar but they dance rings around the people working at Lidl. I never feel comfortable asking any of the Lidl staff for help in finding an item or confirming a price, even when they have a pricing gun right there with them and while they are on the floor. Just something I have experienced: the fresh (potted) herbs that I've bought at Lidl have all died within a week or two of being brought home. This has happened with those I've transplanted as well as those I've left in their original pots. My theory is it has to do with being transported under very cold conditions but I don't know for sure. What I do know is the success rate of their living after leaving Lidl isn't on the plus side. It's been probably a couple of months since I went to Lidl and I today I can certainly confirmed that I prefer ALDI much better. Lidl is slightly more expensive than ALDI but it should compensate that small difference in price by providing a better service. It felt quite the opposite today. First of all a lot of the freezers were empty and things were not restocked, for being so much larger in size than ALDI sometimes it doesn't really feel that way. When it was time to pay I decided to try the self check outs which are fairly new. It seems that they purchased the cheapest scanners in the world because when I tried one I couldn't get my burgers to scan so I went to another one, in that one the burgers scanned but not the sausage. So I gave up. I went to the regular cashier. Only one was open and the line was super long ( I guess they all know that the scanners don't work ) After I paid I realized that the 12 pack of Diet Coke that I was buying on sale for 2.50 showed on my receipt for $5, I complained and it took about 10 mins for them to Check the real price and I was right. I got reimbursed. I also ended up leaving the sausage because they wanted to charge me more. It was not a good experience I'll go back to ALDI next time. read more

Decided to venture out to check out the grand opening of Lidl. Lots good deals on random things. I liken it to a "suped-up" German general store. It has a bakery and then a section which has clothes and hardware tools. The selection rotates so you can come often for random items. I will continue to shop at Lidl as my previous review is mostly still true; however, I have noticed a decline in quality during our recent trips to the store. The past few times we've visited, they were almost wiped out of a lot of the produce. Additionally, the scales that you can use to weigh your items and print labels are now barely ever working or have paper in them for the stickers. It's a bit frustrating as you can't weigh your produce to estimate the price per pound. They still have great deals/prices on so many items and the quality of their name brand products that we have tried have not disappointed thus far. I do hope that they improve their produce section as it is a bummer to stop by to grab a few groceries and they are mostly out of everything (even on weeknight). read more

Not at all what I expect in a food market. The building is bigger than all of its content. You ask the people that work there if they have something that you are looking for and they look at you as if you have 5 heads attached to your shoulders. They do not cater to vegetarians either. The closest thing to any remotely vegetarian are bags of lettuce. No frozen vegetarian tofu chicken or anything of that sort. No black bean burgers etc. and get this, no zoodles!! Even the low end markets have doodles! I don't think that I will ever be going back!! read more

It's ok for me. They don't have a phone for customers to call in on. So if you want to know if they have an item you can't call. The idea is cool, the prices are that of typical off brand items. Some things are pretty cheap. Their brand of rootbeer is amazing for what we reason it's fantastic. But it's not a one stop shop for me, I can only get a few things here so I don't go often. But beware, prices are confusing as they only apply to certain days like Monday through Wednesday, not a full week like most competitors. Employees also do not know the products and produce. My husband anticipated the opening of this store for months and has not been disappointed yet. I've been there twice with him and I love this store. Their motto is "rethink grocery" and now I have. Although I have not discovered all that it has to offer I do have my favorites like the produce. I find the fruits and veggies to be so much cheaper and fresher than the other local grocers. In the past week we purchased avocados at $0.49 each! Today they were selling for $0.99 which is still lower than most stores selling as High as $2.49 each. The canned and packaged foods are priced low too. We got canned but garbanzo beans for $0.49 compared to Kroger $1.19 per can. There are specialty items like chocolate covered sunflower seeds and gnocchi. They sell non-food items too. The bakery items are very tempting when you enter the store but I have yet to try any. I am a vegetarian but the choice of meats and meat products appear to be of good quality. It is not a large space and they do not carry everything. For example, I did not find canned coconut milk. However, it is worth it to us to drive 20+miles for the shopping experience and to save on my grocery budget. On both trips I received a store coupon for $5 off $30 grocery bill. If you like discounted supermarkets than you have found your place. They focus on their house brands of stuff like Cheese Its which in all cases we have tried thus far are just as good as name brand. The true value here does not lie in the prepackaged vacuum sealed meat, fish or poultry as they are average at best, but in the excellent and superbly priced fresh vegetable selection. The prices for fresh vegetables versus the competition in the area are easily half the price. Additionally with two little ones in the house we go through wheat bread quickly, and the house packaged loaf of bread is only $0.85 per loaf, half that of even Publix. It is an interesting hyrbid of a true European grocery store and American one as the size is not typical of one found in Europe but the select truly is. Bring your own bags, and bag them yourself is necessary but easily accomplished. Overall an excellent place to get fresh vegetables and staples! read more

Trader Joe's on steroids! Except that I liked this better, because I never understood the charm of crowded aisles. What they've got they've got, and what they don't they don't. We went to try it, but still had to stop at a conventional grocery to complete our weekly run. The bakery is small, but good. They have nice flowers. They have a great selection of cheeses. In fact, their dairy prices are excellent across the board. Veggies were OK, but again lacking in some basics, and there was a very limited selection of meats. As far as the staples, many of them are house brands, and we have not tried everything we bought yet. Their cookies were good, but again, there is very little choice to be had. The most confusing thing about the experience is an aisle in center store that has everything from toddler clothes to power tools. It looks like you've wandered into a flea market. Still, if you want an industrial vac with your Merlot, this is the place to go. It's clean and new and I'd go back if I were in the area for some hard to get items that they carry, but this is not going to turn into a Harris Teeteresque go-to shop for our family. read more
