Sadly, It's not what it used to be. The stand looks run down as well as the faded and dirty Breyers Umbrellas. We ordered butter pecan. It didn't taste like the Breyers ice cream I am used to. It had a maple walnut aftertaste. It looks like the owner is just running it down. It needs a thorough sprucing up. Though there are other ice cream spots in City Island, none have the uniqueness that Lickety Split has. Seems like Lickety Split has kept their doors opened for ages with different ownership. But most recently, Louise has kept it in control for the last 11 years. It's an old-fashioned 'home' exterior decor, with white tables and cotton candy-color cushion chairs. Interior is very confined. At most, a few people can move comfortably. I remember quite well, the many times I'd come here and had to stop for ice cream. And coming here brought nostalgia. But sadly, their ice cream is not proprietary to Lickety Split. It's Breyer's...and there was nothing artisanal or truly satisfying, except that it's locally owned and a staple here. That's it. (Lickety, doesn't have the physical space to make their own ice cream). With its history, the only thing I wanted to do was enjoy a lazy summer evening with my chocolate ice cream cone, instead I was bored. read more

Cutest ice cream joint ever! You can't beat the charm of the tiny house that serves ice cream. I've been a customer for years ever since my dad started his City Island bus route. I've been going to Lickety Split since... before I was born. My grandparents live on the island and so I used to spend whole summers at their house. Naturally, my fondest childhood memories occurred here. Their soft serve is to die for and I always loved walking down the block with my grandma to get a cup (I eat ice cream too slow and found cups work better for me). When I was little I would always play on the marine animal statues in the little park next to it. Now I just sit in the lovely shade and watch kids make these memories of their own. I love this place, it always makes me feel so welcomed and cozy. I hope it's there for as long as I live so I can bring my family one day and share with them my super-sweet memories. read more

The Bronx is seriously lacking in ice cream parlors - if I'm not mistaken I think this may be the only one in the borough besides Carvel and Baskin Robbins. However, artisan ice cream shops are in style, so hopefully we'll see some open in the future. For now though, we're stuck with Lickety Split. Let's start with the exterior - it's done very well. There is plenty of outdoor space to mingle while eating your ice cream; seating may be limited, but there's a lot of room to stand. The parlor itself is extremely small; there's a small standing area immediately upon entrance plus a little more to your right - if more than 4 people are standing inside it would seem a little cramped. There really is no decor; plain white walls, tile floors, a couple of vintage ice cream pics above you - really no frills. The menu boasts a number of selections - besides ice cream, they make shakes, have gelato, sorbet, and froyo. The menu itself, however, is written on a whiteboard and positioned so it's hard to see. You can make a whiteboard menu look pretty but this wasn't professional at all - the writing looked childish and it was too small to comfortably read given the distance it was from us. I decided to play it safe and just get ice cream - but not too safe so I chose strawberry banana. The ice cream was okay, however the letdown was that it was not homemade. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Breyer's but when I go out for ice cream I don't want something I can buy at the supermarket. The portion was too big as well - I ordered the biggest small size cup I've ever seen. Overall, Lickety Split needs to step it up - for an independently owned ice cream shop I expected more care to be put into presentation, and for homemade ice cream. Do yourself a favor and take a drive up Pelham Road to Red Mango for some froyo - or better yet, head to Morris Park for some authentic Italian ices. read more

Sure, it's basically Breyer's Ice Cream but it's delish and they have a decent assortment of flavors, plus shakes, soft ice cream, ices, gelato, coffee, etc. The actual shop is a small tiny house that looks like it's out of a cartoon or Alice in Wonderland with a white picket fence around it and plenty of outside seating in the garden yard that surrounds it. I was walking down City Island Avenue and noticed this place right away. This small wooden old fashioned ice cream shack has a cool exterior. It is $2.00 for a kiddie size portion or $2.75 for a small portion. I opted for a small, which was a good portion. However, the ice cream itself is just Breyer's ice cream - the same stuff you can find in a grocery. There is not a big variety of flavors either. However, it is okay to stop by to enjoy the charm if anything. read more

Although Ive been to City Island countless times, Ive never step foot near this place. I always thought it was going to be a nice ice cream parlor with gourmet flavors, toppings and inside seating. However, the place was a disappointment as it had a Kennedy Fried Chicken spot feel. All their ice creams are store brought from Breyers. They dont even make their own ice cream. Its only a hot spot because its the only ice cream shop on City Island. However you're better off going to the Basket Robin in the Dunkin Donuts at the beginning of the island. read more

Really cute vintage inspired ice cream parlor. I was really hoping to snag some home made ice cream on a sizzling HOT summer day! Instead, I was met with regular Breyer's ice cream flavors that I could've gotten from my local deli store. Anyway, service was ok. Polite and friendly, but nothing to really remember. I went with the mango flavored ice cream, and sat outside to enjoy a few minutes of the day. Outside is the only place you can sit, as there are no chairs or tables inside, and maybe 5 people tops fit comfortably on line. If you're in the neighborhood I'd say pay the cute little place a visit, and bring the kids so they can get a kick out of the outdoor bubble machine! If not, save yourself the drive and hit your local Carvel, Baskin Robins, or supermarket for Breyer's Brand ice cream! read more
