This is the first wedding anyone in our family has done in Alaska, so after our first experience at the shop in ANC, we were all kind of feeling like "oh...is this wedding dress shopping in Alaska?" Thankfully, that's where Arctic Rose entered the picture. The owner and senior designer, Tammy, was nothing short of phenomenal. Her professionalism, sensitivity, eye for detail, care for her customers' tastes, relaxing and thoughtfully designed space, and more put us all at ease. She was kind, treated my SIL with respect and dignity and overall made the experience such a positive one. The two hour appointment with buffer on each side gave us plenty of time to relax, my SIL time to try on favorites again, and time to chat with Tammy about all the things. During the appointment, she gave us space when we wanted to sit and deliberate, but was nearby to answer any questions and consistently made sure we had the refreshments we needed to add to the experience. She was ready to give an opinion when we asked for it, but was not overbearing or pushy with her opinions. Her expertise and passion shined through brightly. And I haven't even gotten to the dresses yet! Tammy's broad selection of dresses is outstanding. They are all gorgeous, high quality, and reasonably priced. Every dress we looked at seemed to be very high quality. It was very hard to even narrow it down. The cleanliness, brightness, and charm of her space also contributed to the feelings of elegance. Though my SIL hasn't *yet* said yes to a dress, Arctic Rose has made such a positive impression on us that I will be back to shop for my own wedding dress in the future, and I wouldn't doubt if my SIL ends up returning to Arctic Rose. After we got the final number, which was 6, we learned that Orainda's caps the number of guests at 4. My SIL called to cancel the appointment for that reason, as she wanted to respect the shop's policies, but she spoke to Orainda's daughter on the phone who insisted that 6 was totally fine and that we should keep the appointment, which we did. However, when we showed up with 6, Orainda was the one working/hosting our appointment and she immediately made a fuss about our numbers despite my SIL going to lengths to make sure it was okay. She also immediately insisted that we take off our shoes, which is fine and normal, but the approach was very gruff. She then went on a long tangent about family drama she was having which was why her phone kept ringing -- rather than just muting her phone. My SIL is a first time bride and the engagement came fairly fast, so she didn't know EXACTLY what she wanted. Orainda belittled her for this, turning to the rest of us saying, "she doesn't know what she wants, but you all know her better than I do so you better help her figure it out" in a tone that was unamused and rude. The few preferences my SIL did provide were largely ignored, with Orainda insisting she try on a dress that my SIL explicitly said she wasn't interested in. Orainda also asked questions and made comments outright about body type etc that were rude and uncalled for, or at the very least were lacking tact and sensitivity. On top of this, when it came time to try dresses on, my SIL wasn't given the option for any of us to help her with changing, but rather Orainda went right in and gave a strange spiel about how she "wasn't looking at" my SIL and how she "didn't judge" but didn't make my SIL feel comfortable during the changing process. She didn't really give my SIL much of a choice to consent to have the owner all up in her business while changing. During the try ons, Orainda repeatedly made comments that made us all look at each other like "did she really just say that?" She was very blunt about her opinions and acted like her opinion was the most important one in the room, even when we didn't ask for an opinion. She also consistently gave unsolicited advice, not just about dresses or weddings but about medical matters for friends of the bride that were with her. When that guest expressed that she had the situation addressed, Orainda continued to insist the friend follow her advice. It was very odd and off putting. By the end, we had narrowed it down to a couple of dresses and we didn't even have time to try them back on because the next appointment was walking in while my SIL was still in a dress. Had my SIL wanted to walk out with a dress that day, she couldn't have because she wasn't even given the choice since the next appointment was starting (which Orainda made sure we knew). The whole process felt rushed and unprofessional from beginning to end. We should have read the reviews before we came that the daughter provides a positive experience, but the owner herself not so much.

To be honest, I was uncomfortable to put myself into a gown for a day that has a purpose to put me in the center of attention. However, I had done my research before going in, with my thoughts that I did not want the traditional white/ivory color, a little thought on the cut, but I also had an open mind to see what silhouette would look great and maybe, just maybe I would find the one. My appointment was on a Friday evening at 7:30 pm and NO ONE else was in the store. I asked my stylist, Anaise, if this was normal, and she said "Yes, this is the BEST time to come!" - I pictured the excitement to come on a Saturday when the shop might be bustling with excitement, but through the appointment I LOVED the fact that it was just my stylist, my friend and myself. I did not have to feel strange eyes on me, and I could just be me and honest. Anaise gave my friend and I an opportunity to go through the store and pick some dresses that we enjoyed and wanted to try. The only dress I really wanted to try was a gray one, but we still were open to that traditional white/ivory. After I tried on several, I put on the gray and I knew that was the right color. Then I tried on a gold that was a a great fit but the color was just wrong. The experience was great to get me warmed up, Anaise did a great job, was professional, and really understood what I was after, but David's Bridal was limited to what I really wanted. Unfortunately, the styles found online were not available in the store anymore as well. I would say the store gets 2-3 stars, but staff gets 5 because they are fantastic. I give 3, though, because I would say the options remain limited for myself. However, the prices are great, affordable, and you will be able to have a fantastic experience, find a dress with a great fit, and be beautiful on your day.
