A lot of people dis Lextran, but while I'm only an occasional rider I've been quite pleased with their overall service. The buses are nearly all late models with many Gillig buses sporting hydraulic decks than can be lowered to meet the curb and they're also kept relatively clean as far as public transportation vehicles go. In my experience the service runs mostly within 5-10 minutes of schedule and thanks to their fancy GPS tracking system you can get an up-to-the-minute ETA for the next bus by calling their automated response system (859-253-4636) and entering the stop number printed on the sign at each bus stop. Lextran bus fares are among the cheapest in the country, too: $1 regular adult fare with free unlimited transfers, $3 for an unlimited daypass or $30 for an entire month of unlimited rides. They also offer discounted fares with applicable ID for students, children under 18 (kids 6 and under ride free with an adult), senior citizens, people with disabilities and Medicare cardholders. They also currently offer a $15 prepaid pass good for 20 rides with no expiration date, which is great for the occasional rider like me. The biggest drawback to riding Lextran is it only runs inside the Lexington city limits despite being part of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (sorry about your luck, Fayette Countians outside Lexington proper). They also discontinued service to Nicholasville in neighboring Jessamine County on Nov. 1, 2014; the Blue Grass Community Action Partnership offers a "JessLex" service, but it's not nearly as convenient and costs more ($5 round-trip as of January 2015). Another annoyance is you can only pay with cash on board the buses, although at least you can purchase an unlimited daypass from any driver. If you'd like to pay with a credit or debit card and need the full range of available pass options, you either have to go to the Transit Center hub on Vine Street, Lextran's administrative office on West Loudon Avenue or order online via PayPal (gag) and have the pass mailed to your PayPal-confirmed address. Area Kroger stores sell the 30-day unlimited passes, but nothing else. A $75 student "Class Pass" (good for one academic year) can be purchased at Kennedy Bookstore on South Limestone, University of Kentucky Parking Structure 5 (409 S. Limestone) and UK Parking Structure 6 (721 Press Ave., at Virginia Avenue), but those are the only options available at those locations. Lextran recently unveiled a new official mobile app for Android that I haven't tried yet, but to my knowledge they don't offer a comparable iOS app (which is pretty lame since Lexington has an Apple store). The app doesn't appear to offer more than simple schedule information, though. Perhaps it will become more robust over time, but I doubt it since they used a turnkey third-party solution instead of developing their own custom app from scratch. Considering the quality of UK's computer science department, that's also lame. If you want limo service, call a limo. If you're made of money, have to be somewhere as soon as possible and don't have a car, call a cab or Uber. If you can figure out the looping routes (which all start and end at the Transit Center) and have at least a somewhat flexible schedule, don't have unreasonable expectations for a mass transit system and want to save money on transportation while also getting that warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from helping the environment a bit, give Lextran a try. But don't expect stellar customer service from the window attendants at the Transit Center. The drivers are almost all at least reasonably friendly, but the TC reps locked away behind glass seem to range from disinterested and aloof at best to sometimes downright rude. read more

I gave a one star because there is no options for zero stars. This service is soo unreliable, they're always late, the app is horrible and works at a bare minimum. The app will tell you the bus left 5 mins ago, yet you're sitting physically on the bus that has not gone anywhere. Or the bus NEVER came. The customer service at the Transit station is not a service at all. The people working there are rude and could careless about you as an individual or their job. Whomever rates this service as good is lying. It's unprofessional and unpleasant!!! read more

I occasionally ride the bus and decided that I would today. This isn't based on the customer service or the driver. As my experience with both was good. I took the Newtown Pike Bus which was late coming in due to an accident, so that should have been my first warning. However I sat and waited and waited to get to Walmart. On my return trip the bus was late again due to traffic, not the driver's fault. However my bus left the transit center at 7 we got there at 702 and ALL the buses were gone. My transfer expired at 759. The bus was late getting to the transit center so it was 802. I asked who I'm assuming was the supervisor if I would still be able to use the transfer. His response was the buses were all there . False the Versailles Road bus was not there. Why would I sit for an hour and ten minutes roughly waiting on a bus if it was there. I told him there had been delays and again he said all the buses were on time, simply not true. If you look at the schedules for the Newtown pike bus and the Versailles road bus there's no room for being late. I'm born and raised in New York and you can catch a bus every 15 minutes or so. The transit system here is so atrocious it's almost obscene. This experience left such a bad taste in my mouth that I seriously want to call and complain, not that anything will be done. read more

Lextran, not the best transit system in America. I would think a midsized city transit system would be better than metro systems. Nah. No customer service on Sunday and after business hours on weekdays; supervisors are scarce sometimes. Today, I attempted to buy a day pass boarding the bus and for some reason the system timed out after paying. Operator said would take care of it at the transit center Arriving to transit center for the next departure, operator took my name and phone number and said would be reimbursed Monday. Told me to tell the bus operator on the transferring bus what happened but I may have to pay another fare. The remaining cash I had was large bills and no change is given on buses. No customer service or supervisor in Transit center at the time. I requested a supervisor, and forty minutes after requesting, as I'm writing this, I am still waiting. read more

First off, Lextran doesn't practice effective social distancing. Nowhere close. The rows are not separated. I have had to get off several vehicles because a masked person with a bad cough sat down 2 feet away. I have lived in several medium sized and big cities, and Lexington is not small enough to have such an absurdly bad public transit system. 300,000K justifies far better. What set me off today is just one in a series of serious, correctable deficits: the #13, Beaumont, broke down at the transit center. It was supposed to depart at 1:13, but its replacement, a stinking slideabout TROLLEY on which social distancing is IMPOSSIBLE, arrived at 1:30. I was headed for a doctor appointment. This practice charges missed appointment fees. 75 bucks because effin Suckstran can't afford to maintain its fleet. Damn, I'm mad. read more

Ive been late to work multiple times. Finally got in the habit of going to the bus stop 3 hours before work to avoid being fired and to show up early and what happens? The bus route was so ridiculous, and had a new driver, that I was on the leestown bus for over an hour! Just to get to town centre. And maybe think about putting a bus stop back on kiethshire way! Public transportation and Lextran can be quite easy to use and facilitate in Lexington. The Transit Center does leave a lot to be desired however it is meant to be used temporarily as you transfer buses. I enjoy riding and overall service is satisfactory. read more

I have both autism and anxiety problems because of these I do not drive a car and my parents are not always around to take me places. I need good bus service sometimes it's sometimes it's good and other times it's bad. A few incidents have been a real nightmare is for me. One problem is the scheduling there are paper schedules but I always lose them or they get wet because I go swimming at the Y. Weekends are the worst. some of the worst incidents involved trying to get to Leestown Road.The bus that goes there only comes once an hour not half an hour like the other buses. The closest bus that could take me there was the Versailles Road which made me walk down Forbes Road which is nothing but railroads and no sidewalks. Many times I've had meltdowns and started screaming right in front of everyone.their paper schedules not coincide with the ones on Hotspot and Google which are a real problem I think they need a phone app I also have a disabled pass but I can sometimes I cannot find it quick enough think there needs to be an app or something similar to a Fandango movie ticket app. Nobody at the desks seems to actually want to help customers and make their experiences better and easy. Update: They now have a phone app, I still problems I have problems with some of the drivers, in particular, my current afternoon driver who does not let passengers on the bus after the old ones get off and has missed my stop (intentionally?), making me end up screaming. I am tired of telling people things "I can't help" or "I have a disorder" when they do not understand these. read more

One can waste away one's life by riding Lextran. Riders sacrifice so much of their precious time waiting for, and riding, Lextran. What normally takes a few minutes to travel from point A to point B ends up taking 30-45 minutes, and the bus only operates every 35 minutes during the day and every 70 minutes during the evening and weekends. What normally might take a few hours, to go shopping and run errands, ends up taking 8 hours if riding Lextran. The enormous expenditure of time that is wasted on Lextran by riders is a quality of life issue. The city of Lexington just doesn't care. read more

very rude "customer service". the bus passed me by even though I tried to flag him down. the customer service lady called me a liar because I called after the stop time. that's because I was on hold for five minutes. try to talk to them and they transfer you to dispatch mid sentence. the dispatch lady is nice but I waited 45 minutes for the ride that was supposed to come for me after the bus didn't stop for me. I had to pay a cab. some improvements need to be made. you could at least provide minimal service for the tax money and fares you collect. read more
