They used to have the best biscuits and gravy anywhere. Ordered 1 biscuit and gravy as price went way up. Just flour and milk.....no seasoning. Service was with super attentive, sweet local lady who called us "hon," always a good sign. For sm town cafe pretty big menu, many appealing choices from 20+ breakfasts to 14 sandwiches (even a peanut better/banana "Elvis"). The service was good but from time we ordered till the time we received our food was way too long. We received are food one hour after we ordered it. Took my mom there for breakfast this morning! The service was great and the food was amazing! We all had the Route 66 Breakfast, plenty of food and very good, eggs were cooked to perfection! I've been eating a Lewis's for more than 40 years and it finally felt like the "old place" where food and service were king! Thank you, Amber for bringing it back! Lewis Cafe, where do I even start? Five stars all around. My friend and I went on a food adventure and ordered a ton of dishes. Pancake, French toast, cheese omelette, hashbrowns, biscuit and gravy, bacon, sausage, eggs - you name it. And the verdict? Every. Single. Bite. Was. Amazing. We decided to look for a place to stop and eat brunch on the way to Meramec Caverns, which is only about 15 minutes away from St. Clair. We coudn't have been happier with the Lewis Cafe. Lewis Cafe has been in business in quaint little downtown St. Clair since 1938, and one could see why. Breakfast menu was terrific, with several specialties. They use homemade pork sausage, which I had in the gravy on my order. I ordered the Scamble, which was a full order of biscuits and gravy covered with their delicious sausage gravy and topped by scrambled eggs and cheese, along with a side of crisphy hash browns. It was DELICIOUS! Others at our table had the French Toast, hotcakes and omelets. Feedback on all were terrific. My daughter ordered three hotcakes, with bacon and scrambled eggs on the side. The hotcakes were huge ... I mean, the size of the plate. I wish our waitress would have explained how large they were because she could only eat about half. I helped her with about a quarter of the order and we both agreed that they were just average in taste. Certainly filling, but not exactly fluffy. Service was terrific and the ambiance is exactly what you would expect in a small town ... kind of like a step back to the 1980s. read more

Stopped in at this place this morning for breakfast. Seeing a rating of 4.5 stars with over 100 reviews my expectations were for an enjoyable breakfast in a diner setting. The setting was as expected but the food was simply not very good. I try to state the positive up front. The service was good and the staff were very friendly. If the food had been average it would be worth a stop if in the area. But the food wasn't good. I had 2 eggs over, biscuits and their whole hog sausage. Eggs were prepared as ordered so nothing wrong there. The biscuits were obviously from frozen pucks and one of the biscuits I had was dried out along the edge and hard enough as to not be edible. The one large sausage patty was bad. It tasted like fried unseasoned ground meat that had been cooked ahead, refrigerated and reheated in the microwave for service. It was bad. If you do give them a try, avoid the sausage and the biscuits. Me... I'm not going back. read more

Listen, I give Louie's Cafe a five out of five stars when I was a child in my youth at the beginning of my young life, my grandma and my mom used to go to Louis's café. I used to live on Mill Hill Road And live off of Main Street. We would walk to the café. I used to love the vegetable soup and I remember my grandma used to love their pies. The last time I was there was probably about 10 years ago so I need to go back living in St. Louis now. It's been a few years, but this place is still great. I stopped in early, had "the breakfast of champions" (my words, not theirs!) - cherry pie, bacon, coffee, and enjoyed it thoroughly. The bacon was just right - crispy, but still a bit chewy - and the cherry pie popped sweet and tart. I normally don't love piecrust, but I do love theirs - nice and flaky, perfectly cooked, and just a bit sweet. It seemed like the one waitress was way overloaded with customers, but she did a fine job. As before, the place is bright and clean. Oh, and I did take home a slice of their chocolate meringue pie. Stopped here on our way back from a float at Blue Springs. I have to say I was not expecting much from this result of a google search but I was pleasantly surprise. I ordered the swinger and the other 2 (3 total) in my party ordered the breakfast sandwich. My slinger came out perfect, the chili taste good and amount seem more then enough. The sandwhich was massive!! The place was clean and open. We were not sitting on top of other tables which was nice. Amazing. Awesome service and great food at a great price. The staff was super friendly and fast. The coffee was hot and good for a small cafe. The biscuits were light and flaky and amazing for sopping up greasy egg bits. The homemade sausage was salty and spicy, just an all around great breakfast. The pies on the shelves looked great, and had it been a little later in the day I likely would have bought a slice. They have comfortable seating in the front room and more open space in the back. The only down side of the place is the tiny restrooms, but you can't blame them too much, as they're likely built a while ago, and don't take into consideration a lot of the newer amenities available. We stopped here on our way home from St. Louis, based on others' reviews. I ordered the Special #1, which was 2 eggs, bacon, toast, and 1/2 order of hash browns. Everything was cooked perfectly, even the hash browns, which were nice and crispy on top, and cooked but softer on bottom. My daughter ordered the Special #2, which was one egg scrambled with shredded cheese, on top of biscuits & gravy. She's quite picky on how she likes her biscuits & gravy, and she devoured these. My husband ordered the Special #3, which was the 4 oz ribeye, 2 eggs, toast, and 1/2 order of hash browns. He commented that the steak was excellent, and had a wonderful flavor to it. My daughter agreed when she stole the last bite of his steak. I ended breakfast with a big ol' piece of coconut creme pie. It was delicious, and almost like the one my grandma used to make. Travelling through the area and being a fan of local diners, stopped to try it out. Several items need to be mentioned: LARGE selection if pies all home-made. Don't look at this portion of the daily special board if you're on a diet! Also, their beef is home raised and hormone free (not something you usually find in most diners, let alone your generic 'chain' restaurants)! The décor was typical small town café, with wooden booths and counter seating. I was impressed at the cleanliness both in the dining area and the serving areas. Food was very good; I had a burger and onion rings, wife had Rueben and fries. Burger was smashed thin and you have to request lettuce onion and tomato - I nearly forgot, but waiter brought on side dish. Onion rings were a little bland for my taste, but I always carry some ghost pepper powder, so a few sprinkles fixed that. Rueben was made from corned brisket, not shaved deli meat, so nice thick slice; All in all, a gem for the area. read more

Stopped in for breakfast on our drive from St Louis to Branson. It's a quaint little place, reminiscent of a 60's cafe. The sign says they've been in business for 80 years. It was spotlessly clean. Intrigued by the homemade whole hog sausage, we started with a shared order of biscuits and whole hog sausage gravy. Husband also ordered the ultimate breakfast sandwich, and I went with my standard 2 eggs, but opted for sausage instead of bacon. The biscuits and gravy had a lot of that sausage, and the seasoning was good. The problem is with consistency. I know gravy consistency is a matter of personal taste, but in our view it needed about a gallon of milk added. It was as thick as wall spackle. The sandwich was huge, with 2 eggs, a giant sausage patty, cheese, and a pile of hash browns inside a hamburger bun. Everything cooked well, but after 2 bites, he gave up trying to eat it as a hand held and just went with a knife and fork. My eggs, ordered over medium, were cooked perfectly. If you don't like the liquid butter/oil/margarine stuff soaked through on your toast, order it dry. The sausage tastes homemade, and the portion was massive; a good 6 ounces if not more. I could have done with more seasoning, as it came across as a ground pork patty more than a breakfast sausage, but it was cooked well and the consistency was good. We'd go back. read more

We we're looking for a cute little local cafe or diner on our way to Branson, Missouri and followed the Yelp reviews to this place. And we are so glad we did! This place has been around since the 1930's and we can see why. Breakfast is served all day. They also have a large selection of items for lunch including burgers, sandwiches, and entrees. The 2-egg Western omelet was outstanding. The only substitution I made was from American cheese to a cheddar cheese blend. The ham was tender, the vegetables were sauteed which brought out their flavors. The also have it as a 3-egg omelet. I like that you can pick your omelet size. The half order of hash browns was a perfect size and a great balance of crispy and tender. The half order of homemade whole sausage milk gravy and biscuits were very good. Not the best I have ever tasted, but still very good. And if you love buttery goodness, you need to try the cinnamon toast. Service were good and my coffee cup never ran dry. Don't leave without trying a piece of pie. My husband got the cherry crumb and I got the coconut cream. We both agreed that the cherry crumb was the best of the two, but both were very good. The coconut cream was more of a coconut custard and was piled with meringue. I thought I would end up scraping off a bunch of the meringue, but it was so light that it ended up being the perfect amount to compliment the coconut cream. If you are driving by or around St. Clair, MO around mealtime, this place is worth the stop. read more
