Awesome customer service . . . These folks know their stuff! We were looking for a Kangol 504, and although they didn't have the Made in USA versions, they did carry a broad selection of the 100% wool Kangol 504 hats. The staff - two ladies and one dapper gentleman - were so nice to us. So many fedoras, and Stetsons, and all sorts of lovely hats to try on, as well as a busy online business as well. When we asked for a particular size in a couple of hats, both ladies knew exactly what the particular item was and where extras were in storage (and actually went to hunt them down). Impressive! Unlike other stores these days, the staff at Levine Hat Company took the time to care about each of the customers in the store, talking with them about what they wanted and boxing up their new hats to take them home. If you don't want to mess with street parking, there's a nice $10/hr. paid parking lot immediately to the left of the store, on the SW corner of Washington Ave. & 14th St. We walked out with a Kangol 504 as well as helpful instructions on how to care for and store the hat. Their return policy states you'll be charged the free shipping charge on a return ($20), but they fail to tell you that you also pay the same on the way back. I ordered the Stetson natural Open Road hat with the gray trim, but received the black trim instead. When I tried to return/exchange the hat (on the same day), I received a message that said the hat was not returnable per their policy. That would be fine if I received the hat I actually ordered, but in this case I did not. I emailed them twice and received no response. Be warned everyone, the hat you order might not be the hat you get, and you may end up with a Viking helmet or velvet Mariachi hat instead...or whatever hat they want you to have. read more

I ordered two hats online. The Levine was the worst hat I ever purchased and I own numerous hats including beavers, milans, ecuadorian, panama and rabbit fur. I was charged city tax and had to file a complaint with paypal to get it resolved since I did not live in the city. They also promised another refund which I never got, papal is still working on it. In my opinion, Just a bunch of liars with bad overpriced products. You can get hats this good at wal mart for a lot less. Too many other good suppliers out there to deal with these people. I have used Village hats and Delmonico hatter with better results, better service and better products.. read more

Touring St Louis, we stumbled in here quite by accident when we found ourselves trying to get into the City Museum on a day when it was closed. Finding Levine's turned disaster into serendipity. This is a nice store--clean, well-staffed, nicely organized, with hats galore. They hand you a head cover when you hit the door so you can try on hats to your heart's content. The staff were not obnoxiously hovering but were there when we needed them. They've got gorgeous imported hats in expensive felt but also some less-expensive options. Choices for kids and women, too. We left with a great hat for my husband and one for my nine-year-old son. Only our luggage constraints kept us from going a bit crazier. On the train to the airport, a well-dressed, behatted stranger complimented my son's hat . When I said we got it from Levine's, he gave us a big smile and a nod like we'd done something smart. If you have concerns about the neighborhood, it seemed okay to me (visiting tourist). There are some eateries nearby and that section of Washington Street appears to be increasingly taken over by new residential lofts. read more

I brought in a hat my grandfather wore to work at United Airlines back in the day, and they pretty much rebuilt the inside so it fit my head (and wasn't so beat up for being 40 years old!). I was a little surprised when they said it would take 3 weeks, but no bother, I wouldn't even be back in town for a month. Even more surprising was when I got a call a week later that it was done. Last year I was looking for a fedora to wear for a fundraising project I was doing where I was planning to go with an "old school reporter" in support of the Montgomery County Cancer Association. I have kind of a big head, so I had some trouble finding something that would fit and look good. I finally found what I was looking for at Levine Hat Company. The staff was fantastic and were extremely helpful in my efforts to find the perfect hat. Mr. Levine was especially helpful in picking one out, telling me stories of reporters who used to cover boxing back in the day. I ended up with a brown Stetson Sovereign that fit perfect... or it did until I wore it to the Illinois State Track meet and the leather hat band became soaked in sweat and shrunk in the back of my car. Since I put quite a bit of money into the initial hat purchase, I emailed Levine about my problem. They quickly answered, suggesting a "hat jack" and providing a link to purchase one from them online. Just a couple days later, I got the item in the mail and I am back in business for another year of fundraising. All told, I have helped raise more than $1500 for the MCCA and I couldn't have done it without Levine's help. It's the only place I'd buy a dress hat from. read more

I replied, and in less time than it took to write this, he picked out the PERFECT hat for what I needed, both in style and in budget. Needed a couple of new spring/summer ivy hats. Looked at the website and found some I liked but with the, understandable, no return policy from covid, I had to go to the store. Never disappointed. Fantastic selection and excellent service. They like what they are selling and the knowledge is second to none. No question goes unanswered. They had some new arrivals and HAD to have three. My first Panama straw ivy feels great and I don't think the price could have been beat. I challenge you to find a hat they don't know about. Will continue to be the place to go to. read more

It kills me when I see someone overspend on a hat at the mall. Or when some fedora-wearing hipster kid buys his from Target. I think people should go to the Real Deal at Levine's. I love shopping for hats here. This store has been in Downtown St. Louis since Washington Ave. was the largest garment district outside of New York City. It's been family owned and operated by the Levine family for generations. The first time I bought a hat here, I was assisted by Mr. Levine (I didn't know it at the time). He was so kind and helpful. Everyone else who's assisted me there has been great too. You can certainly tell they're all happy to work there. If you don't live in the city, it is worth the drive! Washington Ave. is very safe and bustling with hip loft dwellers. I hope someday Downtown St. Louis is full of clothing stores again. Washington Ave. would certainly be the best place to have such a shopping district. read more

my father loves hats, and so i have learned to love hats. when visiting St Louis i stayed downtown and had a chance to walk over to Levine's. downtown is not a bad place to be in general, but it lacks in a lot of shopping, thats not to say there is none. Levine's externally does not have a lot going for it, its across the street from what we call "A thug apparel outlet" and next to a bus stop in front of a dilapidated lot. walking in was something done more out of boldness than comfort. but when i entered i was moved back in time to when they actually had hats in stores and there was a nice selection. i was greeted by a nice woman and my bag was taken most likely to protect their merchandise from sticky fingers, but instead of what we get in California: "You need to leave you bag up here", they pitched it with a very courteous attitude: "May i take your bag so you don't have to lug that around while you're trying on hats?" I know what they really want, but being told nicely is pretty good in my book. after relinquishing my bag my lady and i were given plastic head covers and let lose in the store. being given and told to use plastic head covers made me feel good again (it means that no ones stank, lice infected head has been in the hat while i have not been there). i was given attention by the sales people, but not too much, and not too little. they made sure i knew they were eager to help and they searched out sizes and styles for me when requested without any complain or sign of displeasure. due to the service and selection i walked out of the store with 3 hats and my lady with 2, they also seem to be able to do embroidering some other modification work, though i didn't have a chance to ask them about all of it. they sell jackets shirts and purses also and have a catalog and website you can order from if you're from out of town. but i left twice without my messenger bag and they didn't even try to let me know. so i kinda gotta take a star away for that. and one cause it was in a crappy location. read more

Finally found what I was looking for. It came down to 3 stores, one in California, one in New York, and Levine Hat Co. I contacted all three. Long story short, one shop was way too expensive and the other had really bad service. Mike at Levine Hat Co., however, was extremely professional, thorough and knowledgeable. My first visit was great. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I purchased a hat for around $160. They let me know that if I needed the hat reshaped their would be no charge since I had purchased a quality hat. I left pleased with my purchase. The second visit was not so much fun. I picked up a friend and we were going down to purchase another hat and get the hat I purchased earlier reshaped. I walked in up to the front counter and the man their told me I need to go to the back of the store. I walked to the back and another gentleman said (I don't know why he sent you back here you have to go up front.) So I went back up front and was told that is is a $30 or $40 dollar charge to reshape the hat. I explained what I was told about free reshaping but they wanted nothing to do with that. If you are buying they love you, but if you want service after the fact don't count on it. read more

I have not been to this store but I called to ask a question and the phone etiquette was very disappointing. I called to ask a question about alterations and was cut off mid sentence several times by an impatient staff member. Then I was made to feel stupid for not knowing correct terminology. They couldn't help with my alteration but even if they could I am not sure I would want to deal with this poor customer service and disrespect. read more

Had a bad experience in 2012 where they sold me a hat off the shelf when they said they would get my size but they just resized that same hat. Had to come back several times where the resident hatmaker altered the hat to make it fit but it never fit properly. Ended up throwing the hat away and sending a letter to the owner which went unanswered. Foolishly went back recently to give them another shot to get a different hat of mine reblocked/resized. Was told hat would need new liner, sweatband, and reblocking for $60. Things were even worse this time! Had to make two more trips back to receive a shotty handshaped crown with a visibly recycled liner and sweatband (which they lied about) and complain to the owner who thankfully scolded the employee (same who sold me the hat in 2012) for the shotty blocking and tried to make it right himself. He refunded half of my $60 and explained that they do not have the hatmaking equipment that they used to. But if this is the case, why are they still offering these services? Got home and had to fix the crown myself only to find that the sweatband had come detached because it was not stitched in properly. The help wanted sign on the door for alterations should have been my clue to go back outside and give my money to the panhandlers that kept harassing me. This business is not the reputable hatter that my family frequented years ago. They are just out to make a buck on a new and overpriced fur felt. It's a crying shame. read more
